A weekend hobbyist in Council Bluffs called us last winter about getting auto lifts installed in his home garage for general daily maintenance on his own vehicles plus the occasional side project. He had already been down the rabbit hole on YouTube and had a spreadsheet of every model he had seen. What he did not have was a straight checklist for what actually matters before you commit. This article is that checklist, in the order we walk through it on every home-garage call, and using his 30-by-40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls as the working example. It is not exhaustive, but it covers the eight things that will save you a phone call to us in six months.

Step One: Measure the Ceiling to the Real Ceiling
Sidewall height is not ceiling height. A 12-foot sidewall pole barn typically has a truss chord that sits at 11 feet 2 inches to 11 feet 6 inches depending on the truss design and the roof pitch. Measure with a laser or a long tape from the floor to the underside of the lowest structural member above the intended lift location. That number is your working ceiling. Any lights, ductwork, or overhead doors that intrude below that number reduce it further, and the lift picks the lowest obstruction as its ceiling constraint.
The hobbyist we visited had assumed his ceiling was 12 feet because that is what he had asked the builder to spec. It was 11 feet 4 inches to the truss chord and 10 feet 8 inches to the light-fixture drops. That difference put an overhead two-post configuration off the table and pointed him at a baseplate configuration or a four-post. When homeowners get auto lifts installed without measuring the actual working ceiling, they end up with a lift that will not fully raise. The rework cost is real.
Step Two: Verify the Concrete Slab
Home garage slabs range from a hopeful 3.5 inches at 2,500 PSI to a proper 4 inches at 3,500 PSI or better. The manufacturer install manual will specify the minimum. On a Rotary SPOA10, the spec is 4-inch reinforced concrete at 3,500 PSI. We recommend coring a test plug at each proposed column location before you commit to a purchase. A 2-inch core drilled and measured tells you the actual thickness and lets you visually inspect the aggregate quality. The cost is small compared to buying the wrong lift.
The Council Bluffs garage had a 4-inch slab poured on a compacted base with rebar on 24-inch centers. It cored at 3,600 PSI, which was within spec with margin. If a home slab comes back thinner than 4 inches or under 3,000 PSI, the options are a four-post lift that spreads load across a wider footprint, a two-post with shorter anchors and a lower torque spec, or a slab overlay pour to bring the thickness up before install. Getting auto lifts installed on marginal concrete is a solvable problem, but only if you know the concrete before you buy the lift.
Step Three: Decide Two-Post or Four-Post
For a home hobbyist doing general daily maintenance, this is the biggest single decision. Two-post gives you wheel-off access, better arm reach under the frame, and a tighter footprint. Four-post gives you drive-on convenience, a much easier learning curve for a first-time lift owner, and the ability to store one vehicle on the lift with another parked underneath. Two-post is faster for actual repair work. Four-post is safer for someone who has never used a lift before and who wants to double the parking capacity of the garage.
The Council Bluffs hobbyist wanted both parking and repair capability. We landed on a Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric two-post because his primary intent was actual maintenance work, not storage. A four-post would have prioritized storage over repair ergonomics. The tradeoff was accepting that he would need to lift the vehicle on a floor jack and jack stands if he ever wanted to park a second car under a stored one, which four-posts handle natively with rolling jacks. His call, informed by knowing the difference upfront.
Step Four: Pick a Capacity With Real Margin
Capacity in the home-garage market is where buyers routinely under-spec. A 7,000-pound capacity lift sounds like enough for a 5,500-pound half-ton pickup until you add a topper, a full tank of fuel, and a bed full of tools. The safety factor we recommend is at least 1.3 above the heaviest vehicle you plan to lift, and 1.5 is better. On a 6,000-pound vehicle, that puts you at 9,000 pounds minimum capacity, which usually means the 10,000-pound tier because that is what is manufactured.
The 10,000-pound capacity tier is the sweet spot for most home garages because it costs roughly the same as 9,000-pound units at retail while offering meaningful capacity margin. Auto lifts installed at 10,000 pounds handle every passenger vehicle currently made in North America with margin, plus most half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups. Going up to 12,000 or 15,000 pounds costs meaningfully more and buys nothing for a hobbyist unless a dually or a diesel one-ton is regularly on the lift.
Step Five: Plan the Bay Layout Before You Anchor
Bay layout is the piece home buyers underplan the most. Where does the vehicle enter? Where does the tool cart sit? Where is the air compressor and the hose reel? Where does the fluid drain go? On a 30-by-40 garage with a single lift, you want the lift centered laterally with at least 4 feet of clearance to each side wall, and positioned longitudinally so the driver door opens into working space rather than into a wall. The overhead door swing also matters if you have a low-header opening.
We drew a scale plan for the Council Bluffs hobbyist that placed the lift 20 feet back from the overhead door, 6 feet off the left wall, and with a workbench along the right wall behind the lift. That gave him a 14-foot approach for pulling the vehicle straight in, a driver-door swing that opened onto an empty aisle, and a workbench within reach without having to walk around the columns. Getting auto lifts installed with a proper layout plan takes an hour of drawing. Redoing the layout after the anchors are in takes days.
Step Six: Budget for Delivery and Installation, Not Just the Lift
Sticker price on the lift is 60 to 70 percent of your total spend. The other 30 to 40 percent is delivery, unloading, anchor bolts, torque and startup labor, and any needed accessories. A home buyer who budgets only for the lift itself ends up scrambling when the delivery truck arrives with a 1,200-pound crate and no forklift on-site. The Council Bluffs job total came in with the lift, delivery, install, one set of taller pad extensions for his low-slung sports car, and a ninety-day return maintenance check bundled together. That is the price he wrote on his ledger, and it is the price we underwrote. Splitting the purchase across multiple vendors to save a small amount typically costs more in scheduling headaches and warranty ambiguity than it saves in retail dollars. Step Seven: Plan for the First Year of Maintenance
The eighth item on the checklist is what happens after the install crew leaves. New lifts need cable retensioning at roughly 30 days and again at 90 days as the cables stretch through their initial break-in. Latches need visual inspection monthly. The powerhead fluid should be sampled at the one-year mark. None of this is complicated, but a home hobbyist rarely has the reference framework to know what a slightly loose cable feels like versus a normally seated cable. We build these return visits into the quote for first-time buyers.
The Council Bluffs owner is now at nine months and has cycled the lift about 60 times. Cable stretch was normal at 30 and 90 days. Latch engagement is clean. The powerhead is quiet and the reservoir is clean. He has learned enough about his own lift that he could handle the visual inspections himself going forward, and the annual professional check is now the only piece we do for him. That is the outcome we plan for on every home-garage install, and it is the reason we walk the checklist front to back before quoting.
