When a small fleet operator near Urbandale called us about getting auto lifts installed for a two-bay expansion, the real question wasn’t which brand to buy — it was how to lay the bays out so differential fluid service didn’t turn into a wrestling match every time a box truck rolled in. We’ve installed lifts all over central Iowa for shops running everything from pickups to medium-duty box trucks, and layout mistakes are the number one thing we get called back to fix. The first configuration we sketched out was the straightforward one — two Rotary two-post lifts, arms facing each other, spaced far enough apart that a tech could still walk a cart between them with the vehicles raised. This is the layout most small fleets default to because it maximizes the number of vehicles you can have up at once, and for differential fluid work that matters when you’ve got three or four trucks due for service the same week. Each bay gets its own drain pan setup, its own fluid caddy, and its own set of jack stands staged nearby for anyone pulling a cover plate.

The tradeoff shows up in workflow. With two lifts running independently, you need two full sets of tools within reach, or your tech is walking back and forth across the shop mid-job. We’ve seen fleet accounts try to save floor space by pushing the lifts closer together, and it backfires the first time someone needs to swing a door open on a raised truck. When we get auto lifts installed in a layout like this, we always push for at least the manufacturer’s minimum clearance plus another foot, because differential service means kneeling and rolling carts underneath, not just standing under a hood.

Layout B: One Two-Post, One Four-Post Drive-On

The second option paired a two-post with a four-post drive-on runway, and this is the layout we ended up recommending for this particular fleet. The four-post handles the differential and fluid-heavy work almost exclusively — drive the truck on, roll a transmission jack or drain pan underneath, and there’s no worry about arm placement under a rear axle housing that’s an odd shape or loaded with a locker. The two-post stays free for general repair, tires, and inspections, which keeps the fleet moving instead of tying up your only lift with a routine fluid drain.

What sold this shop on it was watching how much time gets lost repositioning lift arms and pads on a two-post when the vehicle has aftermarket skid plates or a lifted suspension, which is common on fleet trucks that see gravel roads. A four-post drive-on skips that step entirely. The runway approach also means two techs can work the same vehicle from different angles without one waiting on the other to move a jack stand, which matters more than most shop owners expect until they’re staring at a backlog.

Why Bay Spacing Changes the Math

Bay spacing isn’t just about walking room — it’s about hose routing, power runs, and where your fluid recovery equipment lives day to day. We’ve walked into shops where auto lifts installed years earlier by someone else had the hydraulic power units mounted on the wrong side, forcing techs to drag hoses across a walkway every single lift cycle. On a differential job where you’re already juggling a drain pan and a fill pump, that’s an unnecessary hazard.

For this Urbandale layout, we mapped the electrical run before touching concrete. BendPak and Atlas equipment in home-garage settings has different power needs than a commercial Rotary two-post, and getting that spec wrong means a call-back visit and downtime you didn’t budget for. We always tell fleet operators: tell us where the power panel is and where you want the vehicle to face before we finalize spacing, because moving a lift six inches after the anchors are set is a full afternoon nobody wants.

Pit vs. No-Pit: What It Means for This Shop

Neither layout in this comparison needed a pit, and that’s typical for the fleet accounts we work with in the Des Moines metro. Surface-mounted two-post and four-post lifts are the standard here because most shops are working with existing slab, not new construction where an inground option is even on the table. But it’s worth asking early, because the answer changes your concrete prep timeline entirely.

We always ask upfront whether the shop has a forklift on site for unloading, since a four-post runway and its ramps ship heavy and awkward. If there’s no pit and no forklift, that changes our crew size and schedule for the day. Getting this sorted during the quote stage — not the morning we show up — is the difference between a install that starts on time and one that gets pushed to the next available date.

Concrete Readiness Before Anything Gets Bolted Down

Before we get auto lifts installed at any shop, we check slab thickness and condition at every anchor point, and fleet shops with older buildings sometimes have surprises — patched sections, old in-ground lift pits filled with substandard concrete, or slab that’s thinner near a bay door than in the middle of the shop. Either layout in this comparison depends on solid anchoring, and a four-post runway spreads its load differently than a two-post’s four anchor points, so we run the numbers for both before recommending one over the other.

This is also where we flag drainage. Differential fluid service means spills happen, and a bay layout that dumps runoff toward a floor drain versus away from one is worth planning around now rather than mopping up later. We’ve adjusted lift placement by a foot or two on jobs specifically to keep a drain in a useful spot relative to where the tech will be standing during service.

Scheduling the Install Around a Working Fleet

Fleet shops rarely have the luxury of shutting down for a install. This Urbandale account needed both bays functional in stages, so we phased the work — finish one lift, get it certified and usable, then move to the second while the first is already back in rotation. Which Layout Actually Wins for Differential Work

After running both options for this fleet, the four-post-plus-two-post combination won out, mainly because differential fluid service on trucks with uneven load or aftermarket parts is faster and safer on a drive-on runway. But that’s not a universal answer — a shop running mostly sedans and light SUVs with predictable lift points might get more total throughput from two matched two-post lifts. It comes down to what’s actually rolling through your bay doors on a weekly basis.
