For a crew managing a seasonal storage rotation on a fixed budget — track cars in winter, streetable stuff in summer — that upfront savings can matter more than aesthetics.

Overhead configurations typically cost more because of the additional steel and the engineering needed to distribute load through the crossbar. That said, we’ve had customers tell us the trade-off is worth it once they see the floor stays clear of the overhead cable runs some baseplate models still use near the top. If your budget is tight and you’re financing a first round of lifts before racing season, baseplate is usually the pragmatic starting point, and you can always add capacity later.

Foundation Reality: What’s Actually Under Your Slab

We ask every Dubuque customer the same question before quoting: what’s the slab thickness and age? Baseplate lifts anchor directly into the floor, so a thin or cracked slab can be a dealbreaker regardless of how much you want that configuration. If cars are sitting parked for months at a time and you’re not running constant lift cycles, floor clearance for maneuvering trailers and tow rigs in and out often matters more than lift speed or cycle count. Overhead configurations tend to shine here because the open floor plan lets you shuffle vehicles without ducking under cable runs.

But if your seasonal storage building doubles as a light service bay in the off months — swapping fluids, doing brake work on the track car before it goes back out — baseplate two-post units are usually just as functional and cost less to have installed. We’d rather ask about your actual workflow than assume every storage building needs the premium configuration. A lot of Iowa shops running seasonal rotations end up mixing both: baseplate for the working bays, overhead for the pure storage stalls.

Forklift, Freight, and Install-Day Logistics

Every decision tree eventually runs into logistics, and this is where a lot of quotes go sideways if nobody asks the right questions upfront. That’s exactly the scenario you want written protection against before you sign anything. Ask your installer directly what their payment terms are, whether they require a large deposit up front, and what recourse you have if the install doesn’t pass inspection.

We structure our agreements so customers aren’t carrying all the risk before the work is verified complete. If a company is asking for the bulk of payment before a single anchor bolt goes in the ground, that’s worth a direct conversation about their track record and what happens if something goes wrong. A legitimate installer should have no problem explaining their terms plainly, the same way they’d explain torque specs or anchor depth.

Racing Season Timing and Scheduling Around Your Calendar

For a crew chief managing seasonal storage, timing the install around the racing calendar matters as much as the configuration itself. We’ve scheduled installs to land in the narrow window between a car coming off the trailer for winter and the next build cycle starting, and that kind of lead time needs to be locked in early rather than assumed. Lift manufacturers and freight carriers both have their own schedules, and a rushed install crammed into a tight window is how corners get cut.
