It starts with a whiteboard: budget, bay height, how many cars need to be up at once during a race weekend, and whether the crew can afford downtime waiting on the wrong equipment. Step One: What’s the Real Budget Before You Talk Models

Every decision tree for getting auto lifts installed starts with an honest number, not a wish list. We’ve quoted everything from a single Atlas 15K two-post going into a home garage to a full commercial bay with several Challenger units, and the budget conversation is almost identical each time: total cost includes the lift, freight, concrete prep if the pad isn’t rated for it, and the install labor itself, which for a two-post job typically runs a full day on site. Crews chasing a transmission-service setup often try to lowball the number by pricing the lift alone and forgetting the rest.

We tell every shop the same thing we’d tell a race team managing a parts budget: figure out what you can spend on the whole job, then work backward into capacity and brand. A shop trying to save money by skipping professional installation on a 12,000 lb four-post or a heavier two-post is gambling with a piece of equipment that holds a vehicle over a technician’s head. Once the real number is set, the decision tree gets much shorter, because half the lifts on the market fall out of range immediately and you’re not wasting time comparing spec sheets you can’t afford anyway.

Step Two: Two-Post or Four-Post for Transmission Work

For pure transmission service, the question of two-post versus four-post comes down to how the crew works underneath the car. A two-post lift gives full underbody access, which matters when you’re dropping a transmission and need to swing a jack or transmission table under the pan without fighting a runway. A four-post drive-on lift, by contrast, is faster to load and better for alignment or storage work, but it can get in the way of pan removal unless you add a rolling jack bridge underneath.

We’ve had auto lifts installed both ways for shops doing heavy drivetrain work, and the pattern holds: if transmission service is the primary job, two-post wins for access, and most crews pair it with a transmission jack rated for the vehicle weight they’re pulling. If the bay also doubles as a general-service or alignment bay, the four-post earns its keep with versatility. Western Illinois shops running mixed fleets — a body shop taking on light mechanical work, or a dealership service bay — tend to land on a two-post for the dedicated transmission stall and a four-post elsewhere in the same building.

Step Three: Matching Capacity to What’s Actually Rolling In

Capacity mistakes are the most common thing we see when a shop specs its own lift before calling us. A crew chief working on lighter race cars might be tempted to go with an 9,000 lb lift because it’s cheaper, only to bring in a heavier truck or trailer-mounted rig later and find out the lift can’t handle it. We generally steer transmission bays toward a 10,000 to 15,000 lb two-post, which covers the vast majority of pickups, vans, and passenger cars without forcing a shop into a heavier and pricier commercial unit.

If the shop is doing any diesel truck or larger fleet work alongside the race program, that’s where we push toward a 15,000 lb or higher rated unit from the start rather than planning to upgrade later. Re-doing a lift installation because the first one was undersized costs more in the long run than buying the right capacity up front. This is also where the decision tree branches by geography — western Illinois shops near ag and trucking corridors see more heavy trucks than a pure hobbyist garage, so we factor that traffic into the capacity recommendation before quoting.

Step Four: Model Number Comparison — What the Spec Sheet Actually Tells You

Once budget and capacity are set, the model number comparison gets specific. A Rotary two-post and a Challenger CL-series unit in the same capacity class will have different overhead clearance, different arm reach, and different power unit placement, and those differences matter more in a transmission bay than almost anywhere else in the shop. We’ve seen installs where the power units ended up on the wrong side of the bay relative to the door, which sounds minor until a tech has to walk around a car every time they need to hit the release.

When we quote a Challenger CL10 or a Rotary SPO12-class lift, we walk the customer through arm configuration specifically for transmission access — symmetric arms for even weight distribution versus asymmetric arms that clear the door for driver entry and exit. For teams doing quick service turnarounds between races, we also flag decal placement and control panel location as small things that add up over a full season of use. Getting auto lifts installed correctly the first time means catching these placement details before the anchor bolts go in the concrete, not after.

Step Five: Site Readiness — Concrete, Power, and Access

No decision tree for auto lifts installed is complete without the boring logistics that actually determine the install date. We ask every customer the same questions before we schedule: is there a pit or is this a surface-mount install, what’s the concrete thickness and cure date, is there a forklift or dock on site for freight, and does the bay have clear overhead height for the lift’s full rise. A transmission bay built into an older building in a rural western Illinois town sometimes has concrete that’s too thin or too old for a heavy two-post anchor pattern, and that gets discovered on the day of install if nobody checked ahead of time.

We also plan around the shop’s own schedule. Race teams running a Monday-morning production meeting or a shop with staggered opening hours need us to work around their doors being locked, their crew shift, or a delivery truck blocking the bay. A full two-post install typically takes most of a day, so we coordinate arrival times against whatever else is happening in the shop that week. Getting this logistics conversation right up front is what keeps an install from turning into two trips instead of one.

Step Six: New Lift Purchase Versus Install-Only Service

Not every customer buying auto lifts installed is buying the lift from us. We regularly get calls from shops that already bought a lift through a parts distributor, a dealership network, or a private sale and just need it installed, leveled, and commissioned correctly. We handle both scenarios the same way — same inspection of the pad, same torque specs on anchors, same fluid fill for hydraulic units, which for a typical two-post runs several gallons of ATF depending on the model.

The install-only route works fine as long as the lift itself is the right spec for the bay, which loops back to steps one through four above. We’ve also picked up jobs where a lift was installed by someone else and never worked right from day one — an electrical fault, a lock release cylinder issue, or a clevis pin that came loose in the linkage — and the fix ends up being a full reinstall rather than a simple repair. Whether you buy through us or bring your own lift, the decision tree matters just as much for install-only work as it does for a full package.

Step Seven: Long-Term Fit for a Race-Season Schedule

The last branch of the decision tree is the one crew chiefs care about most: will this lift keep up with a full race season of transmission swaps, brake work, and quick turnarounds without becoming the bottleneck. That means thinking past the install date to annual inspections, cylinder reseals, and cable replacement on a schedule that matches how hard the lift gets used. A shop running one car a week wears a lift differently than a race team cycling multiple vehicles through the same bay every weekend during season.
