He had a rough budget in mind, a mix of oil-change and full-restoration work on the floor, and no time to compare thirty-eight different models on Google. That request became the framework I now use with almost every commercial shop that calls in. This article walks through the same tree, branch by branch, from budget through configuration and into the cable inspection routine that keeps a lift running for twenty years. It should save you a week of internet shopping and prevent a few common regrets.

Where a Restoration Shop’s Decision Tree Starts: Budget

Budget is not a dirty word. It is the honest starting point for every commercial lift purchase. When I sit down with a shop owner, the first question is always what number are we working with. Not a target price for a single lift, but a total capital budget including delivery, installation, electrical work, first fluid fill, and ninety-day service. That total is almost always fifteen to thirty percent larger than the sticker price the owner started with, and knowing the true total up front prevents the ugly conversation at the end.

Once the total number is on the table, we branch. Under six thousand dollars gets you a solid entry-level home or light-commercial lift with basic warranty and manual pad adjustment. Six to twelve thousand gets you a commercial-grade two-post with better arms, better safeties, and a real warranty. Above twelve thousand opens up premium two-posts, four-posts with rolling jacks, and specialty configurations like alignment scissors or mobile columns. The restoration shop I worked with in southern Minnesota landed in the middle branch, and we spent the rest of the tree deciding which specific model within that budget fit his work mix best. Getting auto lifts installed on a real budget means the tree branches you honestly and the sticker price never surprises you.

Branch One: Under $6,000

The under-six branch is where hobbyists and lower-volume shops live. Lifts in this range are typically ALI Gold or Silver certified, ten thousand pounds of capacity, with symmetric arms and basic hydraulic controls. They will do everything a restoration shop needs for oil changes, brake work, and light suspension jobs. They will not comfortably handle a full-frame teardown or a body-off restoration with the shell suspended above open air for weeks. If your restoration mix is mostly finish work, detailing, and mechanical service, this branch is fine.

The tradeoffs on this branch are real and worth naming. The arms are usually two-stage instead of three-stage, which limits reach on very short or very long vehicles. The safety-lock spacing is coarser, meaning fewer possible lock positions between full-down and full-up. The hydraulic fittings are simpler and easier to service, but the cable retention on the equalizers is not as robust. A shop that runs ten cycles a day on a sub-six-thousand-dollar lift will get seven to ten years before major service is due. A shop that runs thirty cycles a day will get four to six years. Getting auto lifts installed in this branch is a legitimate choice for the right shop mix, and the price-to-value ratio is often the best of any tier for a low-volume operation.

Branch Two: $6,000 to $12,000

This is where most working restoration shops land, and it is where our southern Minnesota shop landed. The middle branch buys you commercial-grade equipment from names like Rotary and Challenger with real warranties, three-stage arms, tight lock spacing, and cable systems designed for a million cycles. A shop can run these lifts through daily oil changes, heavy suspension work, and long-hold body-off jobs without worrying about component fatigue.

Within the middle branch, you still choose between two-post and four-post, symmetric and asymmetric, ten and twelve and fifteen thousand pounds of capacity, standard and extended arms, and a dozen accessory options like rolling jacks, alignment turntables, and air-line kits. That is where the second layer of the decision tree kicks in. For a restoration shop that does mostly passenger cars and light trucks with the occasional heavy-duty pickup, a pair of twelve-thousand-pound asymmetric two-posts with three-stage arms is usually the answer. Add a four-post with a rolling jack for storage and long-hold jobs, and you have a three-bay setup that will handle nearly any restoration project. Auto lifts installed in this configuration are what we have shipped to more restoration shops than any other combination over the last five years, and the owners come back for the second lift when they add a bay.

Branch Three: $12,000 and Up

The top branch is where specialty and heavy-duty equipment lives. Mobile column lifts, alignment scissor lifts, and heavy-duty four-post lifts for chassis and coach work all price in this range or higher. A restoration shop that regularly works on Class 3 or Class 4 trucks, RVs, or industrial equipment will need to be shopping this branch, but most general restoration shops do not need to be here.

The specific case where a restoration shop should look at the top branch is when the shop’s work mix includes body-off restorations with the shell held stationary for weeks. In that case a mobile column setup or a full-length four-post gives you a stable platform for photography, media blasting, and long-hold assembly work. Mobile columns also let you configure the workspace differently for each job, which is a real advantage in a shop that does one-off custom builds. Getting auto lifts installed at this level often requires additional electrical service, reinforced concrete, and delivery logistics that a smaller shop does not have to worry about. The premium equipment repays the investment in throughput and capability, but only if the work mix actually demands it.

Adding Cable Inspection to the Owner’s Calendar

Every commercial lift on the market uses cables somewhere in the system. Even hydraulic two-posts use equalization cables to keep the two carriages synchronized. Those cables are the single most important safety wear item in the entire installation, and they need to be inspected every six months on a working shop lift, not annually. The ALI standard says annual, but experienced installers all recommend the shorter interval for lifts in daily commercial service.

The inspection is quick and cheap. Fifteen minutes per lift, twice a year. What you are looking for is birdcaging near the sheaves, broken strands within a single lay length, cable diameter reduction from wear, and equalizer bar tension imbalance across the two sides. Any of those findings means the cables come off, and they get replaced as a full matched set, never one at a time. For the southern Minnesota restoration shop, we put a cable inspection reminder on the shop’s calendar every April and October, and we sent them a laminated inspection card to keep on the wall next to the lift. Getting auto lifts installed with the inspection schedule already in place from day one is the difference between twenty years of trouble-free ownership and a nasty surprise in year eight. It is not extra work. It is just work that gets done on the calendar instead of after an incident.

Configuration Decisions After the Budget Is Set

Once the budget branch is locked in, the configuration decisions start. Symmetric or asymmetric. Ten, twelve, or fifteen thousand pounds. Two-stage or three-stage arms. Overhead or floorplate. Standard or low-profile. Painted or powder-coated. Each of those decisions has a right answer for a specific shop mix, and there is no universal answer. We work through them one by one with the owner, using the actual vehicle mix as the tiebreaker.

For a restoration shop doing mostly classic muscle cars and older pickups, asymmetric arms make sense because those vehicles have long wheelbases and heavy front ends. Three-stage arms make sense because the pad points on a 1968 Camaro are further inboard than on a modern Camry, and the extra reach matters. Twelve thousand pounds of capacity is usually enough because the heaviest vehicle a restoration shop will see is a full-frame pickup at eight thousand pounds gross. Floorplate lifts save ceiling height for tall projects. Overhead lifts keep the floor clear for cart movement. Every decision has a tradeoff, and every restoration shop weighs the tradeoffs slightly differently. Getting auto lifts installed with the right configuration for your work mix means going through this tree systematically instead of picking whatever is on sale that week.
