Why Arm Geometry Matters More Than Weight Capacity for Diff Work

Most people shopping for a lift fixate on the weight rating and stop there. For differential service, arm geometry matters just as much, if not more. A symmetric 2 post lift centers the vehicle directly between the columns, which is great for balance but can put a column or arm assembly right where you want to stand to swap a diff cover or pull an axle. An asymmetric lift shifts the vehicle forward, opening up rear clearance so you can walk in, roll a transmission jack or drain pan underneath, and work without ducking around structure.

For overlanding and off-road builds specifically, this matters because the work isn’t just an oil change — it’s diff fluid, u-joints, driveshaft inspection, sometimes a locker install. All of that happens at the rear axle, and you want unobstructed access there. If your shop rarely touches diffs and mostly does brakes, tires, and fluid changes, that tradeoff barely matters. But if you’re building a shop around off-road and overland work — locker swaps, gear service, long-travel suspension — we’ll usually steer you toward asymmetric, or at least recommend having one asymmetric bay in a multi-lift shop so you have the option when the job calls for it.

Ceiling Height, Floor Thickness, and What Gets Missed

Every time we quote auto lifts installed for a pole building or metal shop, we ask about ceiling height and floor slab thickness before we ever talk about lift models. A 12-foot sidewall, like the Iowa City shop had, works fine for most two-post lifts with a lifted truck on it, but it’s tight if you’re running taller extended arms or a four-post with a rolling jack on top.
