An EV specialty shop owner in the Iowa City area called us before he signed his lease. He had done the reading, watched the YouTube videos, and shown up to the conversation convinced he needed floor scanners, custom battery jacks, and a totally different class of lift than a traditional shop. Some of that was right. A lot of it was wrong. This piece walks through the most common myths we hear about auto lifts installed for EV shops, and what our site survey actually finds when we go out. If you are opening an EV service business in eastern Iowa this year, this is the conversation we want to have with you before you buy anything.

Myth 1: EVs Need a Completely Different Lift
They do not, in most cases. A modern battery-electric sedan or SUV lifts on the same body pinch welds and factory jack points as a comparable internal-combustion vehicle. A Tesla Model 3 or a Ford Mach-E is well inside the capacity envelope of a standard 10,000 pound two-post. What is different is the arm placement and the pad configuration to clear the battery pack, and that is a training issue for the technician, not a hardware issue for the lift.
Where EVs actually change the lift specification is at the top end. A GMC Hummer EV or a Ford F-150 Lightning Extended Range weighs in the 8,000 to 9,500 pound range curb weight, which pushes past what a 10K two-post can safely handle. For those, we quote a 12K or 15K commercial two-post from Rotary or Challenger. But we quote the same lift for a diesel dually or a heavy-half-ton, so it is not really an EV issue. It is a heavy-vehicle issue. Any EV shop planning to service the newer heavy platforms needs the same lift capacity a fleet shop would need. That is the honest answer, and it drives most of the specification conversations for auto lifts installed for EV work.
Myth 2: You Need a Special Battery-Drop Lift
A battery drop is a real service and it is heavy. A full pack on a Model S runs about 1,200 pounds, and a Rivian pack pushes 1,800. What that means is you need a battery lift table rated for that load, not a totally different vehicle lift. The vehicle lift is the same 10K or 12K two-post you would use for any other service work. The battery lift is a separate piece of equipment, wheels underneath the raised vehicle, catches the pack when the bolts come out, and rolls it away.
We stock and install both. Our EV shop customers typically get a standard commercial two-post lift plus a battery lift table sized for the packs they intend to service. Together those handle 95 percent of EV service work. Where a shop occasionally needs a specialty lift is high-volume Tesla work where the tech drops packs daily, and we can quote scissor-based EV lifts for that specific case. But for a startup EV shop opening a first bay, standard auto lifts installed alongside a battery table is the right first purchase.
Myth 3: The Site Survey Is a Formality
This is the one that costs new shop owners the most money. The site survey is where we catch every problem before it turns into a re-order. We measure ceiling clearance at the truss line, door swing arc, slab thickness with a core or pour record, existing electrical service to the panel, air compressor capacity, and the drive path from the overhead door to the intended bay location.
What we find, on almost every EV shop lease-space walkthrough in the Iowa City area, is that the previous tenant left at least one surprise. Common ones: HVAC ductwork dropped four inches below the ceiling in the lift arc, a sanitary sewer cleanout in the middle of the bay, a 100-amp service panel that cannot support a 30-amp lift circuit plus a Level 2 EV charging station, or a slab that was poured over a fill zone and cracks under vibration. The site survey turns a potential $8,000 mistake into a two-hour visit and a corrected quote. Any customer planning auto lifts installed in a leased commercial space should treat the survey as the most valuable step in the process, not the most annoying.
Myth 4: A 4-Post Is Better for EVs
Four-post lifts have their place, but not usually as the primary lift in an EV shop. A four-post is a drive-on lift, meaning the vehicle rolls up ramps and sits on runways at a fixed wheelbase. That is great for alignment work and vehicle storage. It is not great for wheel service, brake work, or under-vehicle inspection where you want the wheels hanging free and the pinch welds accessible.
Most EV service, including differential fluid changes on the drive units, reduction gearbox service, and coolant system work, is easier on a two-post because the technician can walk around the entire underside without navigating the runways. We do sometimes recommend a four-post as a second lift for an EV shop that also does alignment work, but the primary lift is almost always a two-post. That is the same recommendation we make for a traditional shop, and it holds for EV work too. Auto lifts installed in EV shops follow the same duty-cycle logic as any commercial shop.
Myth 5: Electrical Prep Is Simple
An EV shop with two service bays and a Level 2 charging station in the customer parking lot can easily need 100 amps of new panel capacity beyond what the previous tenant used. We have quoted EV shop projects where the electrical upgrade was three times the cost of the lift itself, because the building service had to be upgraded from 200-amp single-phase to 400-amp three-phase to support fast charging plus lift operation plus HVAC.
The site survey catches this. We coordinate with an electrician on the first visit and get a scope estimate for the panel work before the customer signs a lease or commits to a lift order. That is the difference between an EV shop that opens on time and an EV shop that opens six months late because the utility company had to run new service to the building. Myth 6: HV Certification Changes the Lift
High-voltage certification training for EV techs is mandatory and important. What it does not do is change what lift you buy. The certification covers how to depower a vehicle before service, how to handle a damaged battery pack, and how to isolate HV circuits. It is a technician training program from OEMs and organizations like ASE. The lift itself is the same equipment a traditional shop uses, plus PPE and battery handling gear.
What certification does affect is your insurance and your shop layout. Some carriers want a designated HV service bay with insulated flooring in a specific area, and some want the battery drop zone segregated from other service work. Those are shop-layout considerations that come up in the site survey, and they can change where we position the lift within a bay. But they do not change the model of lift we quote. Auto lifts installed for EV work look mechanically identical to the same lifts installed for gas-vehicle work; the difference is in the shop protocols around them.
What the Survey Actually Produces
After a full site survey, the EV shop owner gets a written report from us covering ceiling and clearance measurements, slab verification, electrical scope estimate, HVAC clearance, drive path, and any structural corrections needed. Attached to that is a lift quote broken out by lift model, freight, install labor, and annual inspection. Nothing hidden, nothing bundled into a mystery line.
What that report gives the shop owner is a real number to take to his bank, his lease negotiation, and his insurance broker. It gives him a install timeline he can share with his opening date. And it gives him confidence that the lift he orders will actually fit the bay when the crate arrives. It is about knowing your bay top to bottom before the truck rolls, and that is what the site survey delivers.
