Cedar Rapids has more third-generation family shops than any Iowa city I regularly work in, and when one of those shops calls about getting auto lifts installed, the conversation almost always starts with the building itself. Older Cedar Rapids garages were built to accommodate the vehicles of their era. That means twelve-foot ceilings that measured taller in the 1950s, service doors that swing in ways modern lifts do not accommodate, and rear overhead clearance that becomes a real problem for tall crew-cab pickups. The Third-Generation Question: How Tall Is the Building?

The first question I ask a Cedar Rapids family shop owner is how tall the building actually is. Not what the deed says, not what the property card lists, but what a tape measure reads from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction. That number is almost never the same as the nominal ceiling height. On a shop I worked with last fall, the owner told me his ceiling was fourteen feet. When we measured, the lowest truss cord was eleven-foot-two. Three feet of nominal height had been eaten by structural steel that the owner had never thought to include.

Getting auto lifts installed correctly starts with the honest measurement. Overhead two-post lifts want a minimum of eleven feet six inches to twelve feet of clear overhead at the shutoff bar. Floorplate two-posts can work in ten feet six inches if you accept the tradeoff of a floor bar between the columns. Four-post drive-on storage lifts want ceiling height that equals the tallest stored vehicle plus seven feet of lift travel. For a family shop planning to store a lifted pickup on the top, that math gets tight quickly. Every set of auto lifts installed by us goes through this measurement before the quote is finalized, and I have walked away from three quotes this year because the ceiling did not add up.

Measuring True Ceiling Height in an Older Cedar Rapids Shop

Measuring ceiling height in an older shop is not as simple as extending a tape. Modern lifts care about the clearance at the specific overhead location where the shutoff bar or the raised vehicle will sit, and that location is often not the highest point in the building. In one Cedar Rapids shop we found the ceiling peaked at fourteen feet in the middle of the bay but dropped to ten feet at the walls because of sloped ceiling panels installed for insulation. The raised vehicle would clear at the center but strike the wall panels at the sides.

We use a laser measure and take readings at eight points around each proposed lift location. Center, four sides, and four corners of a fourteen-by-fourteen envelope around where the columns will stand. That grid gives us a real picture of the working overhead, not just a nominal number. Ductwork, sprinkler heads, garage door tracks, and light fixtures all count as overhead obstructions if they sit lower than the raised vehicle. In older Cedar Rapids shops, sprinkler compliance was added at some point after the original construction, and the sprinkler heads almost always hang lower than the original ceiling. That is where a lot of getting auto lifts installed goes sideways for owners who tried to do it themselves without a proper site check.

Door Swing and Rear Overhead Clearance

Door swing is the least-discussed spec in the lift industry and one of the most important in an older shop. Overhead sectional garage doors on older Cedar Rapids buildings often use extended tracks that hang deep into the interior when the door is open. A modern high-lift track can drop the interior clearance by two feet when the door is up. If the door is open while a vehicle is on the lift, the interior clearance at the front of the bay drops accordingly. We have seen shops damage doors, damage vehicles, and damage lifts by not accounting for door swing on install day.

The fix is straightforward but requires measurement. We ask every family shop to open the service door fully, then measure the interior clearance at the fully-open door position. That is the clearance we design the lift install around, not the closed-door number. Rear overhead clearance is the other frequently-missed spec. A vehicle on a two-post lift extends behind the columns by the length of the rear overhang, and that overhang often sits directly under HVAC ductwork, ceiling fans, or storage lofts. Auto lifts installed with proper rear overhead planning avoid these conflicts entirely. Auto lifts installed without the planning cause a lot of headaches in the first month of ownership.

Storage Lifts vs. Service Lifts for a Working Family Shop

Family shops in Cedar Rapids often want both storage and service capability in the same building. That is a legitimate ask, but it usually means two different lifts, not one. Storage is a four-post job. Service is a two-post job. Trying to serve both with a single lift produces a compromise on both ends. The four-post that stores well is slow and awkward for oil changes. The two-post that services well cannot safely hold a car for six months of static loading.

For a shop with three or four bays, the answer is usually one four-post storage lift on the end of the building and two-post service lifts in the working bays. That configuration lets the family park a project car overhead for months while running daily service on the other lifts. Cedar Rapids family shops that operate this way tend to keep their equipment for twenty-plus years, because each lift is doing what it was designed to do. Every set of auto lifts installed by us in this configuration includes matching capacities to the actual vehicle mix, and we adjust the recommendations if the shop plans to expand into heavier vehicles down the road. The cost of a properly configured multi-lift setup is not much more than a mistakenly-chosen single lift that has to be replaced in five years.

Post-and-Beam Barns, Steel Trusses, and the Ones That Will Not Work

Not every building will hold a lift. Cedar Rapids has a fair number of older post-and-beam barn structures that families have converted to shop use, and those buildings often cannot safely hold a modern overhead-shutoff two-post lift. The overhead crossbar transfers load to the ceiling framing under an emergency stop condition, and post-and-beam framing usually cannot handle that transfer without reinforcement.

Steel truss construction handles overhead lift loads well as long as the trusses are engineered for point loads. Wood truss construction is usually fine for a four-post storage lift but marginal for an overhead-shutoff two-post. We look at the framing during the site check and make a call on which lift types are viable. If overhead two-posts are ruled out, we recommend floorplate two-posts, which route load through a floor-mounted bar instead of the ceiling. Getting auto lifts installed in an older building sometimes means adjusting the lift type to fit the building, not the other way around. Owners who insist on a particular lift type when the building will not support it eventually pay for that decision with ceiling repairs or worse. Auto lifts installed properly work with the building, not against it.

Real Cedar Rapids Install Dimensions

Numbers make the abstract concrete. On a Cedar Rapids install last month we set two twelve-thousand-pound overhead two-posts in a bay that measured 26 feet wide by 32 feet deep with 12 feet 6 inches of clear overhead at the truss line. Post spacing on each lift was 133 inches center-to-center. Anchor pull tests hit 4,500 pounds on both bays. The service door opened to a clear interior of 10 feet 2 inches with the door fully raised on high-lift tracks. Total labor was 34 hours between two techs across two working days.

That kind of detail matters because it lets an owner see what a real Cedar Rapids install looks like. The bay was a former paint booth converted to service use in 2015. The concrete was a 2015 pour at 6.5 inches thick with number-four rebar on 16-inch centers, which is exactly what a two-post lift wants. The electrical panel was 200 amps with room for two 30-amp 220-volt circuits. Everything lined up because the owner had done his homework with his electrician and concrete contractor before he called us. That is the pattern we see over and over. Family shops that plan the space in advance get auto lifts installed cleanly on schedule. Shops that call us the day the lift arrives usually end up delaying a week or two while we sort out a slab or an electrical panel.

What We Confirm Before We Deliver

Before any lift leaves our warehouse for a Cedar Rapids install, we confirm five things on paper. Slab thickness measured at four points. Ceiling height measured at eight points around each column location. Door swing dimension with the door fully open. Electrical panel amperage and available circuit space. And rear overhead clearance at the length of the longest vehicle the shop expects to service. That checklist takes about twenty minutes on a site visit or thirty minutes over a phone call with the owner holding a tape measure.

The reason we insist on the checklist is that a delivered lift that will not install correctly is a bad day for everyone. The freight is scheduled, the crew is scheduled, and the shop bay is out of service for the install window. If the slab fails a core test on install morning, the whole schedule slips and everyone loses money.
