That kind of longevity is common in rural Iowa shops, but it also means the layout, concrete, and expectations around a new lift are all locked in by decades of habit. What Three Generations Taught Us About Lift Placement

Watching a shop that has run continuously since the Eisenhower administration teaches you which corners have been used and which have been ignored. The oldest bay in this northwest Iowa garage still had scuff marks from a cable-lift install poured in 1962. The middle bay had been rebuilt in the 1980s. The newest bay was poured in 2004 when the current owner took over from his dad. Three generations, three concrete pours, three totally different starting points. When we walked in to get the new lifts installed, the first thing we did was scan each bay’s slab for age, thickness, and visible cracking.

What we found lined up with what the owner told us. The 1962 slab was five inches thick, unreinforced, and unusable for a modern two-post lift. The 1980s bay had a six-inch reinforced slab that met minimum spec. The 2004 bay had eight inches of engineered concrete with rebar on eighteen-inch centers, perfect for a heavy-duty two-post. That placement decision saved the owner from a rejected install, which we have seen happen twice in the last year when a shop assumes any bay will hold any lift. Getting auto lifts installed on legacy slabs means knowing which pour year you are standing on, and that is information most owners cannot recite off the top of their head without pulling old records.

Concrete, Bay Layout, and Post Spacing in Legacy Shops

Older shops were often laid out for smaller vehicles. A 1960s bay might be built for a ten-foot door and a twelve-foot ceiling, which knocks out a lot of taller two-post options right at the front gate. Post spacing is the second measurement we take. On a modern symmetric two-post the columns want a minimum of 133 inches of clear width, and asymmetric setups still need 129. Legacy shops with brick knee-walls, steel jack posts, or corner drains routinely fail those numbers by two or three inches, which is enough to force a smaller-capacity lift or a different bay entirely.

We also check the drop from ceiling truss to floor, because most owners quote the wall height and forget the truss cord drops nine or ten inches into the working envelope. In the northwest Iowa install, the middle bay had a nominal twelve-foot ceiling that measured out to eleven-foot-three at the truss line. That eliminated the twelve-foot overhead-shutoff lift the owner had been eyeing online and pushed us toward a ten-foot version with a lower gantry. The lifts installed in that shop are now sized to the space instead of the marketing sheet, and every service tech who has walked under them since has said the ceiling clearance feels normal. Choosing the Right Capacity for Everyday Oil Change Work

A family shop that spends eighty percent of its billable hours on oil changes, tire rotations, and simple fluid service does not need a fifteen-thousand-pound lift. It needs a reliable ten-thousand-pound two-post that will still be turning smoothly in fifteen years. That was the target for this owner. He wanted a lift that could handle the occasional three-quarter-ton pickup without complaint, but that would primarily lift sedans, small SUVs, and the odd half-ton every hour of every shift.

We spec’d a ten-thousand-pound asymmetric two-post with three-stage front arms and two-stage rears. That combination clears the door pillars on modern crew-cab pickups and still lets a tech reach the oil pan of a low-slung Camry without wrestling the arm through five extensions. Duty cycle matters as much as raw capacity in a shop like this. A lift that runs thirty cycles a day for thirty years needs a cable set rated for a million cycles, hydraulic seals that survive Iowa temperature swings, and a control tower that a tech in insulated gloves can still operate in January. We source our capacity recommendation from actual work orders, not brochures. If a shop books ten oil changes a day and one alignment a month, the lift we choose reflects that. Cable Life, Cylinder Life, and Why Resale Depends on Both

A used lift is only worth what its wear parts can prove. When we appraised the shop’s outgoing 1980s pair, both hoists still worked, but the cables had visible birdcaging near the sheaves and one cylinder was seeping past the lower packing. Neither lift had a resale value above scrap, because the cost to bring them into ALI compliance would exceed replacement cost. That is a hard conversation to have with a shop owner whose father bought those lifts new.

Cable life on a well-maintained two-post is typically twelve to fifteen years in daily service. Cylinder seals go slightly longer if the fluid is clean. When a shop calls us for trade-in valuation, we start with the cables and cylinders because those two systems determine whether the lift is a rebuild candidate or a scrap unit. A lift with three-year-old cables and one recent cylinder rebuild carries real trade value. A lift with original cables from the Reagan administration does not. That is why the newer lifts we install come with documented service logs from day one. Sliding jacks, air-line kits, alignment turntables, and rolling floor jacks all hold value if they are in reasonable shape. In this install we credited the owner for two Rotary rolling jacks and a set of alignment turntables, which came off the total install invoice. The lift towers themselves went to scrap after we harvested a few reusable arms. The realistic path to lower net cost is not overpaying on trade, it is choosing new equipment that will still carry documented value in twenty years. Real Numbers from Northwest Iowa Installations

The northwest Iowa install ran two full days. Day one was demo, patching, and layout for anchor placement. Day two was setting the two ten-thousand-pound towers, running the hydraulic lines, wiring the electrical, and pressure-testing the system before the first vehicle went on. Total crew time was thirty-two labor hours between two techs. Anchor pull tests hit forty-two hundred pounds on both bays, well above the two-thousand-pound minimum. Our concrete diamond-tip drills wore out three bits between the two bays because the slabs had river rock aggregate.

Numbers like that are useful because they let a shop owner budget honestly.
