Configuration Two: Atlas 12,000-15,000 lb 2-Post for Mixed Fleet and Heavier Truck Work

If your inspection lane also has to handle three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks, or you’re doing DOT-adjacent commercial vehicle work on top of standard inspections, the calculus shifts toward a 12,000 to 15,000 lb Atlas 2-post. The heavier-duty column and arm design carries the extra weight without sacrificing much cycle time, though the arms are typically a bit longer and slower to swing into position, which adds a few seconds per vehicle you’ll notice across a full day.

That combination lets a tech route sedans to the fast lift and trucks to the heavy one, which in practice does more for daily throughput than either lift alone. Shops ordering two or three lifts at once — which is common when a shop is expanding an inspection lane or replacing an entire bay’s worth of aging equipment — should plan for a full one to two day installation window depending on anchoring conditions and electrical runs. We’ve completed jobs where a shop had two 2-post lifts installed and running within a single overnight window so the bay could reopen the next morning, and others where slab prep or electrical panel upgrades stretched the job closer to two full days.

Electrical is worth flagging early. Most 2-post lifts in this capacity range run on 220V single phase, but older rural buildings sometimes only have 110V service to the shop area, which means an electrician needs to be scheduled before our crew shows up, not after.
