Depending on the vehicle, a tech might be under that car for an hour or more, dropping crossmembers, disconnecting exhaust, and working with a drain pan and torque wrench at the same time. That means the lift bay needs real clearance on all four sides, not just enough room to drive the car in. Clearance for Tools, Drain Pans, and Foot Traffic

Gasket work generates its own mess of equipment around the vehicle — drain pans, torque wrenches, gasket scrapers, sometimes a small parts washer nearby. If a shop doesn’t have a floor drain near the lift, we talk through where oil catch containers will sit so they’re not blocking the walk lane. We’ve walked into installs where the original plan had the lift positioned so a raised vehicle’s nose pointed straight at a shop entrance — fine for tire work, less fine when someone’s underneath with a pan of hot oil and a customer walks in unannounced. Small positioning changes like turning the vehicle orientation ninety degrees solve that instantly, and it’s the kind of thing a fresh set of eyes catches before it becomes a habit nobody questions.

Electrical, Air Compressor, and Motor Requirements

One thing that trips up more installs than people expect: motor voltage. We’ve had situations where a lift arrived with a 220 motor when the shop was wired for 110, and that mismatch doesn’t get caught until installers are already on site. Before we schedule, we confirm voltage at the panel and match it against what the lift ships with, so nobody’s standing around waiting on the right motor mid-install.

Air compressor placement matters too, especially in a bay layout built around lift positioning. Some shops assume they need a dedicated compressor mounted with the lift, but depending on where the lift sits, a smaller standalone compressor on the ground nearby can work just as well and frees up space. Scheduling and What to Have Ready Before Install Day
