That’s not a bad instinct, it’s just backwards in one important way. We ask shop owners to separate the lift cost from the install cost early, because they move independently. A four-post or drive-on lift, by contrast, is better suited to alignment, storage, or detail work where the vehicle needs to sit stable without anyone needing to get at the belly of it constantly.

The Site Survey Nobody Wants to Skip

Concrete Readiness Is Where Projects Stall

Concrete is the single most common reason an install date slips. We test slab thickness and condition before committing to a schedule, because pouring new concrete or adding reinforcement takes time to cure before anchors can be set. A restoration shop with an older building, especially one that’s been through additions or repairs over the years, is exactly the kind of place where this matters most.

If the existing slab doesn’t pass, we lay out the options plainly: a partial pour under the post locations, a full new pad, or in some cases relocating the bay to a section of the shop with better concrete. None of these are cheap shortcuts, but skipping this step is how a shop ends up with a lift that fails inspection or, worse, an anchor pull-out down the line. We’d rather tell a customer upfront that concrete work adds a week to the timeline than get auto lifts installed on a pad that can’t hold them long-term.

Matching the Lift to Gasket-and-Fluid Work Specifically

Oil pan gasket work has its own quirks that shape which lift makes sense. Techs need clearance to work a drain pan, sometimes with fluid running, so we talk shops through arm configuration and lift height range rather than just weight capacity. A Challenger CL10 or similar mid-rise asymmetric two-post gives enough height for a full-size pickup or SUV while keeping the tech’s working position comfortable for repetitive gasket and seal jobs.

We also flag drip containment and floor drainage during the site survey, since a bay handling frequent fluid work benefits from having the lift positioned near an existing floor drain rather than in the center of an open slab with no runoff plan. It’s a small detail that’s easy to overlook when you’re focused on the lift itself, but it affects daily workflow for years after installation. Getting this right at the planning stage costs nothing extra — it’s just a matter of asking the question before pouring concrete or setting anchors.

Scheduling, Delivery, and What Install Day Looks Like

Once concrete, configuration, and budget are settled, scheduling is usually straightforward, but lead time still matters. Lifts often arrive on their own delivery timeline separate from our installers, so we coordinate both legs — freight arrival and crew availability — so a shop isn’t sitting with a lift on the floor for weeks waiting on an install slot.
