We hear this constantly from shop owners doing restoration and fabrication work: overhead-style two-post lifts must be the safer, more professional configuration because that’s what big dealerships run. It’s not true, and it’s not really the point. Overhead lifts do offer a rigid overhead beam connecting the columns, which is great for tire shops cycling vehicles fast. But for a European specialty shop doing frame-off restoration, that overhead crossbar becomes an obstruction the moment you’re pulling a body off a chassis, dropping an engine straight up, or running an overhead crane path through the bay.

Baseplate lifts, by contrast, tie the columns together through the floor rather than overhead, leaving the entire vertical space open. When we get a call about auto lifts installed for a shop doing metal work, sheet metal fabrication, or full restorations, baseplate configuration usually wins for exactly that reason — open overhead clearance.
