Why Restoration Work Changes the Lift Conversation

A standard tire shop lift cycle is fast: car up, car down, next customer. Restoration and metal work is the opposite. A frame-off project might sit on a lift for weeks or months, get rolled outside for sandblasting, come back in, and go right back up. That kind of long-duration, in-and-out use puts different demands on arm reach, overhead clearance, and how the lift interacts with everything else happening in the bay — welding, cutting, parts storage on rolling carts. When we’ve had auto lifts installed for shops making this transition, the first question we ask isn’t the brand, it’s how the bay actually gets used day to day.

We’ve seen this exact scenario play out at shops around Okoboji, Spirit Lake, and Spencer where a tire business added a restoration bay almost by accident — a customer asked for help with an old truck, word spread, and suddenly there’s a body cart and a media blaster sharing space with the alignment rack. The lift that worked fine for tires starts getting in the way of ladders, welding leads, and overhead hoists. That’s usually the point where a shop calls us about reconfiguring, and it’s exactly the point where overhead versus baseplate becomes the real decision, not an afterthought.

Overhead Configuration: What It Buys You

An overhead two-post lift routes its hydraulic and cable system through a crossbar above the vehicle instead of through the floor or the base of the columns. For restoration work, that overhead beam can be a real advantage — it keeps the floor completely clear around the vehicle, which matters when you’ve got a cherry picker, a frame jig, or a stack of fender panels that need to move freely around the car. If your bay ceiling has the clearance for it, overhead auto lifts installed in a metal-work bay give you room to roll equipment in from any angle without stepping over anything.

The tradeoff is ceiling height. Most overhead configurations need more clearance than a shop with a lower roofline can offer, and that’s a real limiter in some of the older buildings we work in across the lake region — plenty of these shops were built decades ago with eight or nine foot ceilings that just won’t take an overhead crossbar without hitting the vehicle’s roofline on full rise. Before we quote overhead, we’re out measuring, because this is one of those decisions you don’t want to discover is wrong after the concrete anchors are already set.

Baseplate Configuration: The Practical Default

Baseplate two-post lifts run their hydraulics through the base of each column instead of overhead, which means they’ll fit under lower ceilings and don’t need the overhead beam clearance at all. For a lot of the restoration and metal-work bays we serve, baseplate is simply the only configuration that physically works given the building. The visible baseplate does sit on the floor near each column, which can be a minor snag point for rolling carts, but most shops adapt within a week and route their equipment around it without thinking twice.

Baseplate configurations also tend to be a little more straightforward from an install standpoint, since there’s no overhead beam to hang and align. That matters when we’re scheduling around a shop’s existing workload — like an install we ran on back-to-back weekdays with a backup Monday built into the schedule in case anything ran long, which is common when we’re also removing and relocating an older two-post at the same time as putting in a new four-post for heavier restoration work.

Concrete and Anchoring: The Part People Skip

Before we ever discuss overhead versus baseplate, we’re asking about the slab. Auto lifts installed on cracked, thin, or unrated concrete are a safety problem waiting to happen, full stop. Restoration bays especially — because they often get repurposed from old storage space, machine shops, or additions built at different times — sometimes have inconsistent slab thickness or curing that never got documented. We’ve walked into buildings where one half of the bay was poured to commercial spec and the other half was a patch job from years back.

We test and verify slab thickness and condition on every install because both overhead and baseplate configurations rely entirely on that concrete holding anchor bolts under load, cycle after cycle, for years. This isn’t a step we skip to save time, and it shouldn’t be a step any installer skips. If your slab needs work before a lift goes in, we’ll tell you straight rather than bolt into something that won’t hold, because the failure mode on a bad anchor isn’t a slow leak — it’s sudden, and it’s happening with a vehicle in the air.

Sequencing an Install Around a Working Shop

Almost none of the shops we work with can shut down for a week while we get auto lifts installed. You’ve got customers with appointments, a restoration project already up on the old lift, and staff who need at least one working bay at all times. We build install schedules around that reality — often running the new lift install and an old lift removal or relocation across two consecutive days, with a buffer day built in if something takes longer than expected, which happens more often than not once we start finding surprises in the concrete or the electrical.

Power is part of that sequencing too. Baseplate and overhead lifts both need dedicated circuits run to spec, and we’ve had jobs go smoothly because the shop’s electrician ran power to the manufacturer’s install spec days ahead of our arrival — that kind of prep cuts real time off the job. We’ll tell you exactly what to have ready, including site access details like which entrance to use if your gravel lot or back gate isn’t obvious, so the crew isn’t standing around waiting on day one.

Matching Lift Capacity to Restoration Loads

Tire and alignment work rarely pushes a lift’s rated capacity. Restoration and metal work is different — a body-on-frame project with a full drivetrain still in it, plus a welding cart, plus whatever fixture you’ve clamped to the frame, adds up fast. When we quote auto lifts installed for a shop that’s shifting into heavier work, we’re sizing capacity for the worst realistic case, not the average one, because overloading a lift is exactly the kind of shortcut that turns into a serious accident.

This is also where four-post lifts earn their place next to a two-post overhead or baseplate setup. A four-post drive-on gives you a stable platform for long-duration projects and heavier loads without relying purely on frame contact points the way a two-post does, and it’s a common combination we install — a two-post for quick access work and a four-post for the frame-off jobs that sit for weeks. Getting that mix right up front saves a shop from outgrowing its equipment within a year.

Inspections Don’t Stop After Install Day

Once auto lifts installed at your shop are up and running, the safety conversation doesn’t end — it shifts to maintenance. Cables stretch, arms need periodic adjustment, and a quick-rise lift can sometimes need a regulator added to slow its cycle down to a safer, more controllable speed. We’ve done exactly that kind of adjustment on lifts that were rising faster than a shop was comfortable with, and it’s a simple fix once identified.

We recommend regular inspections on every lift in a restoration bay, not just the newest one. A shop running a mix of four two-post lifts and one four-post, for example, benefits from a single inspection visit that checks cables, arm pins, and hydraulic seals across the whole fleet rather than waiting for something to fail. Catching a worn cable or a stop bolt that needs replacing during a routine visit is a lot cheaper and a lot safer than catching it mid-lift with a project vehicle in the air.
