Why Transmission Shops Ask This Question First

Transmission work is different from general repair. You’re not just getting a wheel off — you’re dropping a heavy assembly, often with a transmission jack underneath, and you need clean access to the pan, crossmember, and mounts without the lift itself getting in the way. That changes the calculus on what kind of auto lifts installed setup actually works for a given bay. A two-post arrangement gives you totally open access underneath since there’s no center obstruction, which matters when you’re maneuvering a jack under a truck. A four-post, especially a drive-on style, gives you a stable platform for longer diagnostic and rebuild jobs where the vehicle might sit for days.

Two-Post: Fast In, Fast Out, Open Underneath

For shops running high volume — several transmission services a day — a two-post setup like a Rotary SPO12 or an AR18-class lift tends to be the practical choice. The open bay underneath means your tech isn’t working around posts or crossbeams while wrestling a transmission jack into position, and the vehicle goes up and down fast between jobs. We’ve installed these in bays as narrow as a single stall, provided the ceiling height and anchoring depth check out.

The tradeoff is that two-post lifts need solid concrete and correct anchor engagement, full stop. We won’t install on cracked or undersized slab, and we tell customers that up front during the quote stage rather than after we’re on site. If your shop’s concrete is original to a decades-old building, we’re checking that before we ever schedule a truck. Also worth noting for transmission bays specifically: arm configuration matters more here than in a typical tire bay, since you need the arms clear of the pan and crossmember for the jack to slide in cleanly. Four-Post Drive-On: Stability for Longer Jobs

A four-post drive-on lift, like a Rotary or a Challenger CLMM-class platform, is a different animal. You drive straight on, no wheel engagement needed, and the vehicle sits rock solid even with a transmission jack loaded up underneath. For shops that do a lot of rebuild work where a truck might be up on the lift for two or three days while parts come in, that stability and the ability to walk around it without touching a control is worth a lot.

The catch is floor space and clearance under the crossbeam if you need a rolling jack to pass through — some four-post configurations need a drop-in bridge or a specific jack height to clear. We’ve had customers order the wrong bridge kit before calling us, and it’s an easy fix if you catch it during planning instead of after delivery. Four-post also generally installs faster than two-post since there’s less concrete anchoring precision required, which matters if you’re trying to get a bay back online quickly.

What Freight and Delivery Actually Look Like

Every install starts with logistics questions we ask up front: is there a forklift on site, is there a loading dock or just a standard door, and is the lift already on the property or still in transit. These sound like small details but they change the entire install timeline. If a lift ships freight and there’s no forklift on site, we need to plan for that before the truck shows up, not scramble the day of.

We also ask about concrete readiness early — thickness, age, any known cracking — because that’s the number one reason an install date slips. For a transmission shop specifically, we also confirm bay clearance for the equipment you’ll be rolling underneath the lift, since a transmission jack needs more swing room than a floor jack. Getting these answers before we schedule a crew means the day of install goes fast, usually well under a full day for a single two-post, a bit longer for four-post depending on bridge configuration and anchoring.

Cylinder Seals and Rebuild Kits: The Part Nobody Budgets For

Here’s the piece that connects directly back to the two-versus-four decision: cylinder health. Two-post lifts run on hydraulic cylinders that see constant cycling in a high-volume transmission bay, and seals wear faster than owners expect when a lift is going up and down dozens of times a day. We stock rebuild kits and seal kits for the major brands we sell and service, and we walk shops through resealing versus full cylinder replacement based on how much wear is actually there versus how much is cosmetic pitting.

Four-post lifts have their own cylinder or cable-and-pulley dependencies depending on the model, and those get inspected differently. Either way, when we’ve got auto lifts installed for a shop doing this much daily cycling, we recommend building a seal kit into the annual service conversation from day one rather than waiting for a cylinder to start creeping down on its own overnight.
