We’ve handled jobs where the shop owner assumed a standard 110V outlet would cover it and had to have an electrician back out for a rewire after the walls were already closed in.

If you’re building out a shop specifically to get auto lifts installed for bearing and brake work, put your air compressor location, air drop points, and lift power run on the plans before the walls close. This also affects where your lift can physically sit — you don’t want your air lines fighting your column placement. Some farm shop owners ask about in-ground lifts because they’ve seen them at a dealership, but for wheel bearing work in a rural setting, an above-ground two-post or four-post almost always makes more practical sense. In-ground installs require a pit, which means extra excavation, drainage planning, and a level of concrete work that most pole-barn shops aren’t built for. Unless you’ve got a specific reason to go in-ground, we steer farm shop customers toward surface-mounted lifts because they’re faster to install, easier to relocate if you ever change the shop layout, and don’t require re-engineering your slab drainage.

That said, if you know you want a pit-style lift down the road, that’s a decision that has to be made before the slab is poured, not after. Retrofitting a pit into an existing shop floor is a much bigger job than building it in from the start. Talk through your long-term plans with whoever is quoting your auto lifts installed, even if a pit isn’t part of this phase of the build.

Payment Terms, Warranty, and Protecting Yourself as the Buyer

We’ve heard from more than one shop owner who got burned by a botched install elsewhere — paid in full up front, then discovered problems only after the crew was long gone, and ended up eating the cost of a concrete repour and reinstall themselves. That’s exactly the kind of situation a good pre-purchase checklist should protect you against. Ask any installer directly about their payment structure, whether a deposit is standard, and what happens if something needs correction after the fact.
