Why Suspension Bays Need Auto Lifts Installed Differently Than General Service Bays

A bay built around strut and shock replacement isn’t the same animal as a standard oil-change or brake bay. When we get auto lifts installed for suspension work, we’re thinking about arm reach for coil-over compressors, adequate rise for a technician to work standing at chest height on a spring perch, and enough clear floor width beside the lift for a strut compressor cart or a floor jack backup. For the Iowa City shop, that meant steering the family toward a two-post asymmetric lift with generous arm sweep rather than a symmetric model that would have crowded a compact stall.

We also talked through frame contact points. Suspension work means the technician is frequently cycling the lift up and down to check ride height and re-torque control arm bolts under load, so the pads and adapters need to sit flat and repeatable every single time. A wobbly or improperly leveled base column turns a 20-minute shock swap into an hour of chasing noise and vibration. Freight Delivery: What Actually Shows Up on the Truck

Most two-post commercial lifts arrive as two or three separate crates — the columns bundled together, a crate for the carriage and arm assemblies, and a smaller box for hardware, hoses, and the equalizer cable. A typical column crate for a 10,000 to 12,000 lb lift runs somewhere in the neighborhood of 9 to 11 feet long and can weigh 800 to 1,200 lbs per bundle depending on the brand. That’s not something two people are wrestling off a lift-gate truck by hand.

We ask every customer the same questions before we ever schedule a date: is there a dock, is there a forklift on site, and is the driveway or lot able to handle a straight truck or semi backing in. In one case with a Central Iowa customer, having a forklift on site for about 20 minutes to unstack the crates saved real money on the install invoice, because our crew didn’t need to bring rigging equipment or spend labor hours manually breaking down the bundle. If a shop doesn’t have a forklift, we can usually arrange one, but it needs to be figured into the schedule and the quote up front rather than discovered on install day.

Forklift Access and Bay Door Clearances in Older Iowa City Buildings

Family-owned shops with decades of history often have a wrinkle newer buildings don’t: door openings and clear heights that were never designed around modern lift crates or forklift mast height. We’ve walked into buildings where the original garage doors were sized for cars from another era, and getting a column bundle through the opening meant checking actual measured clearance, not just assuming a standard 8-foot door would work.

For the Iowa City project, the shop had one bay door tall enough for our forklift to run a raised crate through and a second, lower opening near the old body shop addition that wouldn’t clear a stacked pallet without tilting the mast. We mapped the route in advance — which door, what turning radius inside the building, where the crates would stage before final placement — so install day wasn’t spent improvising around a support column or a low sprinkler drop. Every time we get auto lifts installed in an older Iowa building, that walk-through happens before the truck ever leaves the warehouse.

Concrete Readiness Before the Crew Arrives

No amount of careful freight planning matters if the slab underneath isn’t ready. For a two-post lift handling suspension work, we typically want a minimum of 4 inches of solid, unpatched concrete rated at commercial strength, with no visible cracking through the anchor zone. Suspension bays see repeatable, sometimes aggressive loading as technicians cycle the lift while breaking loose stubborn strut bolts, so a marginal slab that might get by under light oil-change duty can fail under that kind of use.

We’ve been on jobs where a rushed or shortcut install led to a cracked pour and a full reinstall later — a painful and expensive lesson for everyone involved. We’d rather catch a thin or damaged section of floor during the estimate walk-through than after the anchors are set. If a slab needs a patch or a full repour in part of the bay, we flag it before scheduling so the family isn’t caught off guard by an unexpected delay.

Real Dimensions: Clearance, Rise, and Bay Width for Shock and Strut Work

For the suspension bay specifically, we sized the lift around a working rise in the 68 to 72 inch range at full height, giving a technician standing headroom under the vehicle for spring compressor work without stooping. Overall lift width including the base plates came in around 12 feet outside-to-outside on the columns, which meant the stall needed a minimum clear width closer to 13.5 to 14 feet once you account for walk-around space and a rolling strut compressor cart parked to the side.

Ceiling height mattered too — with the vehicle raised to full rise plus the additional clearance needed to swing longer control arms or sway bar links off the vehicle without hitting an overhead door track or HVAC duct, we confirmed at least 14 feet of clear ceiling in that bay before finalizing the model. These aren’t numbers you eyeball from a brochure; they’re measured against the actual building, the actual door swing, and the actual vehicles that shop services day to day, from daily drivers to the occasional lifted truck that comes in for shock work.

Scheduling Around a Working Family Shop

A third-generation shop doesn’t shut down for a lift install — cars are still coming in the door. We build installation schedules around that reality, often running early morning or slower midweek days so the crew can complete anchoring, hydraulic hookup, and calibration without shutting down the whole operation. For multi-lift jobs, like when a dealership service department needed several units handled at once, we’ve coordinated directly with the shop’s own staff and even outside general contractors on the site to keep everyone moving in the same direction.
