An independent pro shop owner in western Illinois asked us to quote auto lifts installed with ALI Gold certification, and specifically wanted a side-by-side comparison of two configurations he was torn between. His work is heavy wheel-bearing service on medium-duty trucks and older passenger cars, which means arm access to the hub and a clean pinch-weld or frame contact matters as much as raw capacity. He was choosing between a symmetric 12,000-pound two-post with a wide drive-through and an asymmetric 10,000-pound with taller reach. Both hold ALI Gold. We ended up installing one of each, and here is what fourteen months of side-by-side use taught us.

What ALI Gold Actually Means on a Spec Sheet
ALI Gold is not a marketing badge. The Automotive Lift Institute runs an actual third-party test protocol at ETL and other listed labs that verifies static and dynamic load capacity, fatigue cycling, drop-test performance, and control-circuit safety. The Gold label means the specific model, at the specific capacity, at the specific arm-length range, passed that battery of tests within the last five-year revalidation cycle. It is not transferable. A lift can carry a Gold label on the 10,000-pound configuration and lose it if the manufacturer changes the arm assembly.
For a western Illinois shop that does insurance-mandated safety inspections, the ALI Gold certification is often required by the shop’s carrier. The owner we worked with had an insurance auditor visit the year before, and the auditor specifically checked for the current-cycle sticker on each lift column. His outgoing lifts had lapsed certifications, which triggered a policy re-rate. Getting auto lifts installed with active ALI Gold on both units resolved the audit finding and cut his premium by a measurable amount at renewal.
Configuration A: Symmetric 12K Two-Post Overview
Configuration A was a Rotary SPO12 symmetric two-post at 12,000-pound capacity. Symmetric means the columns are set with equal arm reach front and back, and the vehicle sits centered between the columns. Drive-through clearance is 118 inches on the SPO12, which is the widest in its capacity class and clears a dually pickup mirror-to-mirror. Arm reach is 46 inches front and rear at full swing, and the rise height is 74 inches at full extension.
The strength of the symmetric configuration for a pro shop is loading medium-duty trucks. A one-ton pickup or a shuttle van with an equal front-to-rear weight distribution wants a symmetric footprint. The tradeoff is door swing. On a passenger car set up on the pads, the front door opens into the front column at roughly 65 degrees, which means the tech has to sidestep to slide in behind the wheel. It is a known symmetric compromise, and the shop owner was fine with it because his mix leans truck-heavy.
Configuration B: Asymmetric 10K Two-Post Overview
Configuration B was a Rotary SPOA10 asymmetric two-post at 10,000-pound capacity. Asymmetric geometry rotates the columns 30 degrees relative to the vehicle centerline and shortens the front arms relative to the rear. The vehicle sits with its center of gravity biased toward the rear column, which lets the front doors swing wide open past the columns. Drive-through clearance is 100 inches, arm reach is 30 inches front and 55 inches rear at full swing, and rise height is 79 inches at full extension.
The asymmetric wins on passenger-car work. The tech opens the driver door fully, slides in, hits the seat memory button, and drives forward or backward without column interference. For wheel-bearing service on cars specifically, the taller 79-inch rise gives the tech room to stand under a full hub-and-knuckle assembly without stooping. When we get auto lifts installed at a mixed-work shop, the asymmetric usually wins if passenger cars are more than 40 percent of the mix. This shop was closer to 55 percent cars, so the asymmetric earned bay two.
Wheel-Bearing Service Side by Side
The owner and I ran the same wheel-bearing job on both lifts back to back three months after install to compare the actual workflow. The subject was a 2018 Silverado 1500 with a failing front hub. On the symmetric SPO12, arm placement went on the frame-rail pinch points behind the front wheel and just ahead of the rear wheel. On the asymmetric SPOA10, arm placement went on the pinch weld in front of the front wheel and just behind the rear wheel because the geometry pushes the vehicle rearward.
Time to pad-set was 90 seconds on the symmetric versus 75 seconds on the asymmetric for this vehicle. Rise time was 45 seconds on both. Hub-nut access at working height was identical. The symmetric configuration had a slight advantage on tie-rod work because the front wheels sit further forward relative to the columns, but the asymmetric had the door-open advantage getting out of the cab. Both lifts held 12,000 pounds on the fatigue-cycle rating with margin, and both carry the current-cycle ALI Gold sticker on the front column.
Anchor Pattern and Concrete Prep
Concrete in the shop was 4.5-inch reinforced at 3,500 PSI, poured 15 years ago and still in excellent condition. We cored a 2-inch plug from each proposed column location before quoting the anchor plan, which is a step we do on every commercial install because a slab that looks fine at the surface can hide a cold joint or an aggregate void two inches down. Both lifts anchor with a 3/4-inch by 7-inch wedge anchor on the SPO12 and a matching pattern on the SPOA10.
Torque spec is 110 foot-pounds on both, verified at install and re-verified at the 30-day return. The anchors are torqued in a star pattern to seat evenly, and we mark each bolt with a paint pen after the first torque so a follow-up tech can see at a glance whether anything has walked. Auto lifts installed on properly prepped concrete with correct anchors are effectively permanent installations. Lifts installed on marginal concrete come back to bite you three years later when a shear-and-lift event trips the safety.
What the Owner Reports at Fourteen Months
Fourteen months in, both lifts are running clean. The owner logs a monthly walk-around checking cable tension, latch engagement, and hose condition, and the checklist has stayed unchecked for anomalies since month one. Cable stretch was within tolerance at the 30-day and 90-day returns. The powerhead on the symmetric has slightly more run-hours because it takes the medium-duty trucks that dominate his morning schedule. The asymmetric shows lower cycle count but longer average lift-up duration because passenger cars sit for longer diagnostic sessions.
His subjective preference is the asymmetric for cars and the symmetric for trucks, which matches the design intent of each configuration. He tells other shop owners who ask that the biggest surprise was how much the ALI Gold audit clearance mattered on the insurance side, and how a proper install eliminated the entire class of nuisance issues he used to see quarterly. How to Decide Between These Two Configurations
Three questions decide it. First, what is your vehicle mix? Trucks over 40 percent leans symmetric. Passenger cars over 40 percent leans asymmetric. Second, what is your bay layout? A narrow bay with columns close to walls handles the smaller asymmetric footprint better. A wide bay with drive-through room welcomes the symmetric. Third, what is your primary work? Wheel-bearing and brake work leans asymmetric for door-open access. Transmission and driveline work leans symmetric for undercarriage centering.
The western Illinois owner made the right call installing both. Roughly a third of shops we quote end up with a mixed bay configuration because they do genuinely different work in different bays, and paying the small premium to specify each lift correctly beats compromising on one type across the whole shop.
