An independent pro shop in Urbandale that runs general daily maintenance work usually calls us with a version of the same question: should we get auto lifts installed as 10,000 lb 2-posts or step up to 12,000 lb, and does the freight and unloading logistics change enough between the two to matter? Both are legitimate answers, and picking the right one comes down to a handful of details that never show up in a manufacturer datasheet. Vehicle mix drives the capacity choice
Ninety percent of the vehicles that roll into an Urbandale general-repair bay are under 8,000 lb curb weight. That fact alone would push a lot of shops toward a 9,000 or 10,000 lb 2-post. But the working capacity of a lift is not the same as its rated capacity. Pushing a lift at 90 percent of rated load on every cycle wears cables, cams, and hydraulics faster than pushing it at 60 percent. A 10K lift under a 7,500 lb Suburban is doing its job. A 10K lift under an 11,000 lb crew-cab dually is asking for early cable replacement.

Standard 11-to-12-foot columns work in almost any bay with a 13-foot or higher ceiling. That is a design decision, not an install decision, and getting it wrong on day one means every future job routes around it. We do a printed floor plan for every quote.
Freight side by side: does capacity change the truck?
A 10K 2-post crate and a 12K 2-post crate ship on the same class of LTL truck. The 12K weighs 200 to 400 lb more depending on brand and column height, but the LTL freight class is usually the same tier because both are considered heavy machinery. Freight into Urbandale from the manufacturer’s origin runs a low-three-digit line for either. The difference on your quote is negligible.
What does change with 12K is the arm and accessory crate. Long arms, adapter sets, and heavier truck adapters ship on a separate skid on some brands. That second skid, if applicable, is usually a small add-on line. Arm reach and adapter comparison: 10K vs 12K
The arm geometry on a 10K and a 12K from the same brand is often more similar than the capacity numbers imply. Rotary SPO10 and SPO12 use similar arm designs, with the 12K adding a beefier front three-stage arm and slightly higher-rated adapters. Challenger CL10 and CL12 follow the same pattern. What this means practically is that the 12K reaches under a long-wheelbase crew cab a little more comfortably, but a properly specced 10K still handles most passenger and light-truck work.
When we spec adapters for auto lifts installed at a general-service shop, we include stackable pad extensions and a small set of frame adapters as a bundle. That covers the mixed rocker heights of modern vehicles, from a lowered sedan to a full-size pickup. On 12K lifts we sometimes add an extra pair of frame cradles for occasional van and box-truck work. On 10K lifts we skip those because the underlying capacity is not there anyway. It is a small line item either way, and it keeps the shop from spending money on adapters they will never use.
Install labor is the same, mostly
The install labor for a 10K and a 12K is essentially identical: two techs, one long day, one bay. The anchor pattern, the plumb spec, the cable equalization, the safety-cam sync, all follow the same manufacturer procedure regardless of capacity. Where a 12K install can run slightly longer is on the powerpack routing if the lift is a taller extended-column model, because the hydraulic lines are longer and the bleed takes a few extra minutes.
Our labor rate for auto lifts installed at an Urbandale shop is the same for either capacity. We do not upcharge based on lift rating. What can move the labor line is site condition: a bay that has to be cleared of ongoing service, a slab that needs coring, or a distance from the ceiling disconnect to the lift powerpack that requires longer hydraulic hoses. In a straightforward install with a ready bay and a ready electrical service, we are in and out in a day for either lift size and the shop is running on the new lift the next morning.
Which one we usually recommend for Urbandale general service

The upcharge over a 10K is modest, the working headroom on a full-size pickup is substantial, and the resale value in year seven is stronger. If the shop is boxed in by a low ceiling or a tight budget and never sees anything over a compact SUV, a 10K makes sense.
