Measure the Bay Before You Fall in Love With a Lift

Every week we get calls from shop owners who found a great deal on auto shop lifts online, only to discover the columns won’t clear their overhead door track or the arms can’t swing without hitting a support post. Before you shop, get real numbers: ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, door width and height, floor slab thickness, and the distance between any posts or walls you’ll be working around. A 9,000 lb two-post lift needs roughly 12 feet of overhead clearance and 10 to 11 feet of width to operate comfortably, and that’s before you account for a lifted truck sitting on it.

We also ask owners to measure how they currently move vehicles through the shop, because that traffic pattern often dictates lift orientation more than square footage does. A rural shop working suspension and shock jobs on farm trucks needs enough room in front of and behind the lift to roll a jack, park a parts cart, and still walk a full circle around the vehicle. If you’re planning two bays, decide now whether they’ll run parallel or nose-to-tail, because that changes which lift width and drive-through configuration makes sense. Match the Lift to Suspension and Shock Work, Not Just Oil Changes

Suspension and shock replacement is harder on a lift than most people expect. You’re cycling the arms up and down repeatedly, sometimes with the vehicle partially unloaded on one corner, and you need clean access to the frame rails and control arm mounts. That means arm reach and pad placement matter as much as weight capacity when you’re choosing auto shop lifts for this kind of work. A two-post lift with adjustable, sliding arms gives you the flexibility to clear frame rails on everything from a half-ton pickup to a farm-modified flatbed.

Four-post lifts are worth considering too if your shop does a lot of alignment-adjacent suspension work, since the ramps give you a stable platform and you can add a rolling jack for the shock and spring removal itself. Whichever style you land on, plan your air line and electrical drops before installation day, not after. Farm shops especially tend to have compressors mounted far from the bay, and running new lines after the concrete anchors are set is a bigger job than most owners expect. We’ll flag this during the site visit so it’s handled in the same trip.

Concrete and Anchoring: The Part Nobody Wants to Talk About

We’ve turned down installs, and we’ve had to reinforce slabs, because the existing concrete wasn’t rated for the anchor pull-out specs a given lift required. If your shop was poured years ago for hay storage or general equipment and not specifically for a lift, get it tested before you buy. Most two-post lifts need a minimum slab thickness around 4 to 6 inches of properly cured concrete, with no visible cracking near the anchor points. Older farm shop floors along the border counties often fall short of this, especially where frost heave has been an issue.

This isn’t a reason to avoid auto shop lifts altogether — it’s a reason to budget for a small concrete pad or reinforcement if needed. We’d rather tell you this before the lift arrives than after we’ve bolted it down and it starts working loose in six months. Ask any installer for the specific anchor and slab requirements for the model you’re considering, and if they can’t give you a straight answer, that’s worth noting. Plan Your Workflow Around More Than One Vehicle

A lot of rural shop owners tell us they want to lift one vehicle and store another underneath or beside it, especially during winter months when garage space doubles as storage. If that’s your plan, factor storage clearance into your lift choice from day one. A two-post lift raised to full height typically clears 6 feet or more underneath, enough to park a low-profile vehicle, but you’ll want to confirm this against the specific model’s max height and your ceiling.

Workflow also means thinking about where tools, parts carts, and jacks live when they’re not in use. Suspension and shock jobs generate a lot of loose hardware and spring compressors sitting around the bay. If your layout crowds the lift against a wall or workbench, you’ll find yourself working around your own equipment instead of the vehicle. We recommend at least 3 feet of clear space on the control-arm side of the lift and a dedicated spot for spring compressors and torque wrenches near the bay, not across the shop.

Two-Post Versus Four-Post for a Farm and Suspension Shop

This is the most common question we field on the Iowa-Missouri border, and the honest answer depends on what else the shop does besides suspension work. Two-post lifts give you full underbody access, which is exactly what shock and control arm replacement calls for, and they take up less floor footprint per vehicle. If suspension and shock work is your bread and butter, a two-post is usually the more efficient choice for auto shop lifts in a working farm bay.

Four-post lifts shine when the shop also does long-term storage, alignments, or heavier trucks where drive-on convenience matters more than open frame access. Some owners split the difference by running one of each — a two-post for active repair work and a four-post for storage or overflow vehicles. Don’t Skip the Lock Mechanism and Safety Checks

We still get calls about older two-post lifts where the arms won’t lock anymore once a vehicle is loaded — a dangerous and surprisingly common failure on units that have been in service six to eight years without regular maintenance. Before you buy new or used auto shop lifts, ask specifically about the locking mechanism design and how often it needs inspection. This matters even more in a farm shop environment where dust, chaff, and moisture are harder on hydraulic and mechanical components than a climate-controlled city garage.

If you’re buying used equipment to save money, budget for a full safety inspection before it goes into service, including the locks, cables, and hydraulic lines.
