A dealership service manager in Waterloo called us last summer with a very specific problem: he needed auto storage lifts that could also handle an alignment when the fleet was not sitting on them. His used-car lot was expanding, seasonal storage of pre-owned inventory was eating his back lot in winter, and he needed to consolidate storage and service on the same equipment without buying two separate lift lines. The Dealership’s Specific Requirement
The Waterloo dealership had four service bays and a growing appetite for used-car alignment work. Their spec was clear: each bay needed to store one used vehicle overnight or seasonally, and each bay needed to do a real alignment when the storage vehicle rolled off. Standard four-post auto storage lifts do not accommodate turning plates and rear slip plates natively, which meant the standard configuration was going to leave them short on alignment capability. Alignment-rated four-post lifts, by contrast, have integrated turntable pockets in the front runways and rear slip plate cutouts that make the whole procedure fast and repeatable.
The alignment-rated lift is roughly 15 to 25 percent more expensive than a base four-post at the same capacity. That price gap matters when you are buying four lifts at once, and the service manager wanted a defensible reason to spend it. What we walked him through is that the turntable and slip plate pockets do not just help alignment work happen. They also change the front-runway geometry in ways that make lower-clearance vehicles easier to drive on, and they are the difference between a lift that can be an alignment lift on demand and one that will always be second-choice equipment for that work. On a four-lift order, the difference paid for itself in the first six months of increased alignment throughput.
Runway Dimensions and Wheelbase Coverage
The runway length on alignment-rated four-post lifts typically runs 170 to 210 inches. For a dealership doing everything from a Focus to a full-size pickup, we generally spec at least 200 inches to cover the long-wheelbase trucks without overhang. Wheelbase max is more important than the length number alone, because a truck with the rear axle right at the runway end will pitch on the ramps and complicate storage safety. We build a wheelbase table into every dealership quote so the service manager can verify which of their pre-owned inventory will actually fit before the order goes in.
Runway width matters differently. A standard four-post is around 24 inches wide at the runway. Alignment-rated versions are typically wider, in the 30-to-32-inch range, both to accommodate wider tire footprints and to give the technician usable standing room around the tires for camber and caster adjustment. On the four-lift Waterloo order, we went with 205-inch runways at 30 inches wide, which comfortably covers everything on their pre-owned lot including the occasional 3/4-ton pickup. That configuration also puts the front turntable pockets in the right place for both car-length wheelbases and truck-length wheelbases without the tech having to reposition, which is a real time saver on high-throughput days.
Used Versus New: When Each Makes Sense
The service manager asked whether four used auto storage lifts might do the same job as four new ones for materially less money. It is a fair question, and the honest answer is: sometimes yes, sometimes no. We pull used four-post lifts out of shops constantly, and the ones with documented cable and hose history, low cycle counts, and clean cylinders are functionally as good as new. What we cannot verify on a used lift without careful inspection is metal fatigue on the runways, wear on the safety lock ladders, and the exact age of the hydraulics. That is the risk you are pricing into any used-lift purchase.
On dealership auto storage lifts specifically, we lean toward new for alignment-rated units because the turntable and slip plate pockets have to be aligned properly to the runway, and a bent runway or a shifted pocket will make alignment work maddening. We would rather sell a new alignment lift than a used one with a hidden geometry problem the customer discovers three months in. For non-alignment four-post storage lifts, used is much more defensible, and we sold this dealership two used four-posts for their outer bays where alignment was not a requirement and four new alignment-rated units for the inner four bays. That mixed fleet strategy cut his total order by roughly 25 percent versus all-new alignment across every bay.
Turntable Depth and Slip Plate Cutouts
The turntable pocket on an alignment-rated four-post has to be deep enough that when a wheel sits on it, the tire tread is flush with the runway surface. If it is not flush, the vehicle rocks off the tread when the tech unlocks the plates to spin the wheels for caster measurement, and the alignment machine reports garbage. Standard depth is 1.75 inches, and that assumes the turntable itself is around 2.5 inches tall in its housing. If you replace the turntables with a different brand, you have to verify the depth match, or the runway height will not match the plate height.
Slip plates in the rear runway cutouts have a similar requirement. They need to sit flush, they need to lock in a stored position for storage duty, and they need to unlock cleanly for alignment work. On the Waterloo project, we specified slip plates that lock with a spring-loaded pin. That way when the dealership is using the lift for pre-owned storage overnight, the plates are locked and the tires sit solid on the runway. When the lift is being used for alignment, the tech pulls the pins and the plates float. It is the kind of small detail that matters enormously in a high-throughput environment where the same lift is doing two very different jobs on a daily schedule.
Weight Capacity for Mixed-Fleet Dealership Duty
The capacity question on dealership auto storage lifts is not just about the heaviest vehicle you own. It is about the heaviest vehicle you might store overnight for weeks at a time. Static loading is not the same as dynamic loading, and while any lift rated for a given weight can lift and lock that weight repeatedly, sitting under continuous load for long periods stresses the cylinder seals and the equalization cables in different ways than short cycles. For the Waterloo dealership’s mixed pre-owned fleet, we specified 12,000-pound-capacity alignment lifts on all four inner bays, which gave them a healthy margin above their heaviest 3/4-ton pre-owned inventory.
Buying capacity margin is not just about safety. It is about long-term reliability. A 12,000-pound lift running a 6,000-pound vehicle at 50% capacity will last significantly longer than a 9,000-pound lift running that same vehicle at 66% capacity, because cylinder pressures, cable tension, and safety-lock wear all scale with load. On a dealership fleet buying four lifts at once, the extra cost of the higher-capacity units is a small percentage of the total, and it pays back in longer service life. This is one of the places where dealership economics differ from home-shop economics, and it is worth thinking about carefully before you finalize the order.
Fitting Four Lifts Into an Existing Bay Layout
The Waterloo dealership’s building was not built for four alignment-rated four-post lifts. It was built for four standard two-post service lifts. When we walked the layout with tape and measured the column spacing, we found the existing bay dividers were about 14 inches too narrow for the wider alignment lifts we had specified. We had two options: rip out and re-space the bay dividers, or select a slightly narrower runway configuration that would fit within the existing walls. We went with the narrower configuration on three of the four bays and moved one interior wall on the fourth bay to accommodate the wider lift where a technician needed the standing room for high-volume truck alignments.
That mixed layout took a full weekend of prep work, but it saved the dealership from a much larger construction project. Fitting auto storage lifts into an existing building almost always requires this kind of custom layout work, and it is one of the things you cannot solve from a spec sheet alone. We do it in person on every commercial install, and the time we spend on the layout is what makes the difference between four lifts that fit and four lifts that almost fit. That distinction has real productivity consequences over the life of the equipment, and it is the reason we still insist on the site walk even when the customer thinks their building is standard.
The Framework We Handed the Service Manager
What the Waterloo service manager took home was a two-page framework. Page one had the physical requirements: runway length, runway width, turntable depth, slip plate specs, capacity margin, and the ceiling clearance worksheet. Page two had the used-versus-new decision matrix: new for alignment-rated bays, used for non-alignment storage-only bays, and a spare parts stock plan for the used units so downtime would not become a problem. He signed off on the mixed fleet, and we installed all six lifts across two weekends without disrupting his normal service operation.
The larger point about auto storage lifts for dealership service work is that you can rarely optimize for one thing. The lift has to store, it has to service, and it has to fit inside a building that was probably designed for something else. Get all three right and the lift disappears into the workflow. Get one wrong and it becomes the bottleneck every technician complains about.
