Auto storage lifts belong in a farm shop for the same reason a good welder does — because you already have the building, you already have the projects lining up in the corner, and lifting a project truck off the concrete is what turns a winter restoration from a two-year-long floor-crawl into a real job. We help a lot of eastern-Iowa farm shops around the Davenport area put lifts into 40×60 and 50×80 pole barns, and there is a specific checklist we run through before we quote them. This piece walks through that checklist item by item so you can pre-qualify your own shop before you pick up the phone.

Step one: identify the actual work — restoration versus routine maintenance
Before we talk equipment, we ask what you are going to do on the lift. Farm-shop owners routinely tell us both — routine maintenance on the F-250 and a full frame-off on a 1969 Chevelle. Those are two different lifts, or one lift with two different accessory kits. Restoration work wants a four-post with a rolling bridge jack, or a four-post underneath and a mid-rise scissor for side access; routine maintenance wants a two-post asymmetric.
When a farm shop puts one lift in a pole barn, we usually steer toward a 9,000 to 10,000 lb four-post — a real one, BendPak or Atlas for storage-heavy use, or Rotary or Challenger if you are running a working commercial-grade shop. Auto storage lifts in this class handle full-size trucks, park a project underneath for months at a time without cable creep, and take a bolt-on air line for the tools you already own. If you tell us you are doing a nut-and-bolt Chevelle plus servicing the family fleet, we spec differently than if you say you just want to store the summer Corvette while you work on the winter one. Step two: confirm the electrical panel and available phase
Farm shops in Scott, Muscatine, and Cedar Counties are all over the map electrically. Some have a fresh 200-amp panel from a 2015 pole-barn build; some have a shared 60-amp subpanel off the house that was never intended to feed a shop. Auto storage lifts want a dedicated 30-amp, 220V single-phase circuit at minimum. If your panel cannot spare a 30-amp double-pole breaker plus room for a compressor, a welder, and a shop heater without tripping, the lift is not your first purchase — an electrician is.
Three-phase is worth mentioning too. A handful of farm shops actually have three-phase service pulled in for grain-dryer or irrigation loads, and if you do, we can spec three-phase auto storage lifts with smaller, quieter pump motors. If you do not have three-phase, do not add it just for the lift; the single-phase versions run fine and have for decades. But do check the panel before you check the freight quote. The number of Davenport-area farm shops that have called us saying the lift is running slow and the answer turned out to be a starving 15-amp circuit somebody spliced in from a shed is higher than we would like.
Step three: measure the slab honestly — thickness, age, and psi
The slab is the second-most-common surprise on farm-shop installs. A lot of older pole barns were poured as horse stalls or hay-storage floors, with 3.5 inches of concrete over unimproved fill, no rebar, and a psi rating nobody remembers. Auto storage lifts want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 psi concrete for most residential-class four-posts, and five inches at each column footprint for the heavier commercial units.
If you do not know what you have, we can core-sample it during a site visit, or you can rent a rotary hammer and pull a small plug yourself in the corner where the lift is going. If the slab is thin, you have three options: pour a new pad in the lift footprint, epoxy in thickened footings, or step down to a lighter-capacity lift the existing slab can support. All three are workable. The one we do not recommend is anchoring a 10,000 lb four-post into 3 inches of unreinforced concrete and hoping. Restoration projects live on the lift for months; a slab failure two years in is a real event, not a theoretical one. Fix the floor and everything above it lasts.
Step four: check the pole-barn ceiling and door heights
Farm shops are usually generous on floor space and stingy on vertical. A common pattern in Davenport-area buildings is 14×14 overhead doors and 14-foot side walls, which is fine for a single vehicle on a lift but tight for two vehicles stacked. If you want a lifted truck stored on top of a low sedan under it, do the height math: overhead door opening plus about ten inches of stored-vehicle clearance up top plus about seventy inches of tech-standing clearance under the lower vehicle. That usually lands you at fifteen-foot walls minimum.
We work with what is there — and if what is there is a 12-foot side wall, we honestly tell you that auto storage lifts in that building are going to be a compromise, not a full two-cars-per-bay layout. It is better to hear that on a phone call than to buy a lift and discover it on install day. If you are still in the planning stage on a new build, this is the paragraph to save. Add two feet to your wall height. It is the cheapest change you will ever make to a pole barn and the one that pays back on every project that follows.
Step five: plan the workflow — where does the second car park?
Restoration work is slow. A frame-off is eighteen months. A wet-blast-and-clear on a 4×4 farm truck is three winters. That means the lift is going to have a car on it for a very long time — the whole point of buying auto storage lifts in the first place — and your daily-driver maintenance has to happen around the project.
The workflow question we ask every farm-shop owner is: where does the second vehicle go when the project is stored up top? Two options work. One, the second vehicle rolls under the lifted one for service — this only works if you sized the lift right in step one. Two, you have a second bay entirely, either open floor or a second lift, so daily maintenance never touches the restoration project. Farm shops that plan for option two almost always add a mid-rise scissor a year or two later; farm shops that plan for option one but skimped on lift capacity end up rolling the project off the lift every time they need to change oil in the pickup, which defeats the purpose. Think it through now.
Step six: freight, forklift, and unload logistics
Farm shops actually have the easiest logistics of any customer we serve, because most of you already own a skid steer, a forklift, or a tractor with pallet forks. Auto storage lifts ship on a 48-inch pallet with four columns and two runways in a crated bundle, total weight usually between 1,800 and 2,400 lbs depending on capacity. If your tractor is rated for 2,500 lbs on the forks, you can unload the truck yourself and save the lift-gate fee.
We do the freight quote to your address before you commit, and we tell you whether the carrier has a truck that can navigate your driveway. If you are down a mile-long gravel lane in rural Cedar County, that matters — some carriers will not run it, and we route through a local terminal instead. For most Davenport-metro addresses, the freight is straightforward and unload takes twenty minutes.
