A weekend hobbyist mechanic in Waterloo emailed us about auto storage lifts last October. He was building a home shop for exhaust work and driveline access on his personal cars, and his email had one specific concern: he had poured a new slab in his 30×40 pole building three years ago, and he was not sure whether the concrete was thick enough or reinforced correctly for a 2-post lift. That single question opened up the whole pre-purchase checklist we walk every hobbyist through before we quote equipment. This piece is that checklist, ordered the way we actually use it in the field, with real numbers and the questions we ask before ever mentioning a model number.

Slab Thickness Is Your First Auto Storage Lifts Filter

Every pre-purchase conversation for auto storage lifts starts with the slab. If the concrete is not right, no lift is safe. Our first ask is always: how thick is the slab, when was it poured, what is the psi rating, and what reinforcement is in it? For hobbyist installs where the owner poured the slab themselves or contracted it out, we ask for photos of the pour if any exist. Sometimes owners photographed the rebar layout before the pour. Those photos are gold and save us a probe or core sample.

The Waterloo customer had 5 inches of 4,000 psi concrete with number 4 rebar on 18-inch centers, tied at every intersection. That is above-spec for any 2-post lift on the market. He was worried the slab was borderline, but he had over-poured for reasons that had nothing to do with lift plans and lucked into a great foundation. Not every hobbyist is that lucky. For hobbyists in Waterloo or anywhere in eastern Iowa, the minimum slab we install on is 4 inches of 3,000 psi with reinforcement. Below that, we recommend a dedicated pour patch. Fiber reinforcement is acceptable if the fiber loading is documented. We look for at least 3 pounds of macro fiber per cubic yard. Wire mesh alone is marginal and depends on placement. Hand-tied rebar is the gold standard for home installs.

Rebar Spacing and Placement Details

Rebar spacing matters as much as thickness. Number 4 rebar (half-inch diameter) on 18-inch centers is the pattern we like for lift installs. Number 3 rebar (three-eighths inch) on 12-inch centers works too, and some hobbyists actually prefer it because the tighter grid distributes anchor pull-out loads more evenly. Above number 4 rebar starts feeling like overkill, but we never say no to a stronger slab. See our slab requirements writeup for more detail.

Placement in the slab thickness matters. Rebar in the bottom third of a slab does nothing for anchor pull-out at the top. Rebar in the top half is what we want. Best practice is to place rebar on chairs so it sits at roughly the midpoint of the slab thickness, but slightly upward. In a 5-inch slab, ideal rebar height is about 2.5 to 3 inches from the top. The Waterloo customer had used rebar chairs on his pour, a small detail that made a big difference when we probed for reinforcement location. Corner distance matters too. Anchor bolts want to be at least 6 inches from any slab edge or expansion joint, and the rebar needs to be present in that zone. If a slab has a control joint running through the planned lift footprint, the anchors on one side of the joint may perform very differently than the anchors on the other. We plan lift placement to avoid joints wherever possible.

The Rest of the Slab Checklist

Beyond thickness and rebar, we look at four other slab attributes: levelness, moisture, contamination, and age. Levelness across the lift footprint should be within a quarter inch. If the slab slopes for drainage or unevenly settled during cure, the columns can end up leaning slightly, and that leaning gets worse under load. We shim if we have to, but a level slab is better and lasts longer.

Moisture matters because damp concrete accelerates anchor corrosion. Any hobbyist installing auto storage lifts in a building that occasionally sees standing water like snow melt tracked in, spring flooding, or a leaky roof, should think carefully about anchor selection and consider stainless upgrades. The Waterloo shop was bone dry, but we always ask. Contamination usually means oil soak from years of vehicle work. Oil in concrete does not usually affect pull-out strength directly, but it does affect epoxy adhesion for adhesive-set anchors. Wedge anchors are largely unaffected. We choose anchor type based on slab condition. Age matters because concrete continues to gain strength for years after pour. Fresh concrete (under 28 days) is not ready for anchor loading. We prefer slabs at least 90 days old for lift installation, and 6 months old is even better. A 3-year-old slab like the Waterloo customer’s is fully cured and ideal for install.

Ceiling and Bay Clearance for Weekend-Shop Lifts

Once the slab passes, we look up. Ceiling height for a 2-post lift needs to accommodate the fully raised vehicle plus safety clearance. For most passenger cars and half-ton trucks, 10 feet of clear ceiling is workable, though tight. 11 feet is comfortable. 12 feet is plenty. The Waterloo pole building had 12-foot sidewalls and a 14-foot peak, so ceiling was not a constraint. Not every home shop has that headroom.

Bay clearance around the lift matters too. We want at least 3 feet of walk-around space on all sides of a 2-post lift. That gives room for the vehicle doors to swing, arms to extend, and the tech to move tools around. In a 30×40 shop, fitting one 2-post and still having room for a workbench, a compressor, and a storage rack takes real planning. We do the layout during site visit. For hobbyists who want a 4-post or drive-on storage lift alongside the 2-post, we plan both footprints simultaneously. Two lifts in a 30×40 shop is workable but takes attention to sequencing. Which lift the vehicle drives to first, which lift the second vehicle stores on, and how the two do not block each other during simultaneous use. Auto storage lifts in home shops win when the layout considers workflow and not just floor plan geometry.

Power, Air, and Utility Preparation

A single-phase 220-volt outlet is enough for almost any hobbyist 2-post lift. Some larger commercial units want 3-phase, but the residential category we sell to weekend shops is single-phase across the board. The Waterloo customer had a 30-amp 220-volt subpanel installed in his pole building for a MIG welder, and the lift ran off the same panel with a separate breaker. Electrical was one line item he already had covered.

Air is optional for a 2-post but nice to have for accessories. Air-operated arm restraints and air-hydraulic rolling jacks both want a clean, dry supply at 90 to 120 psi. If the hobbyist already has a compressor for other tools, plumbing a line to the lift is straightforward. If not, the lift works fine without. Lighting matters more than most owners realize. Under-lift work needs shadow-free illumination, especially for exhaust and driveline access where the tech is looking up into a dark cavity. LED shop lights above the lift bay, positioned to shine into the underside of a raised vehicle, dramatically improve work quality. We recommend at least 10,000 lumens of overhead LED per bay for any auto storage lifts install. Cheap fluorescent tubes cast harsh shadows and make color identification difficult, which matters when a hobbyist is tracing an exhaust leak or identifying a driveline U-joint.

Vehicle Mix and Weight Rating Sizing

The Waterloo hobbyist owned a full-size pickup (about 5,500 pounds), a small roadster (2,300 pounds), and a partially-built muscle-car project (roughly 3,400 pounds when running). His max lifted weight was the pickup. A 9,000-pound 2-post covers that with 63 percent margin. A 10,000-pound 2-post covers it with 82 percent margin. Either would work in principle.

We recommended the 10,000-pound. The price gap is small, and the extra margin protects against future purchases like a heavier truck someday, or a friend’s F-350 dropped by for exhaust work. Buying at the exact needed capacity is a mistake we see often. Hobbyists who bought at spec for their current vehicles and then upgraded 5 years later and realized their lift could not handle the new pickup end up paying twice. Weight rating also connects to arm reach and rolling-jack accessory compatibility. Higher capacity 2-post lifts often ship with beefier arm assemblies rated for longer reach, which helps on wider vehicles and on trucks with running boards. For a hobbyist who works on exhaust, which requires reaching the middle underside of a vehicle, longer arms are welcome. The 10,000-pound rating on our recommended unit came with a longer arm option we spec’d standard.

The Final Checklist Before You Buy Auto Storage Lifts

Before signing a purchase order for auto storage lifts, run through this list one more time. Slab thickness verified at 4 inches or better. Rebar or fiber reinforcement confirmed. Ceiling clearance measured at the actual bay location. 220-volt power available or planned. Anchor pull-out zone at least 6 inches from joints and edges. Vehicle mix accounted for in weight rating with 20 percent minimum margin. Bay layout drawn with door swing and walk-around clearance.

If any item on that list is uncertain, do not sign yet. We would rather come out and do a site visit than sell a lift that ends up incorrectly matched to a shop.
