Column Dimensions and Structural Steel Grade
The four columns of a modern 4-post storage lift are the structural backbone of the whole system. On our recommended commercial-grade units, columns are cold-formed 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch A500 Grade B structural steel tube, typically 4-inch by 6-inch or 5-inch by 7-inch cross-section. Column height ranges from 88 inches on standard-rise units to 108 inches on high-rise. The columns are anchored to the concrete with four 3/4-inch wedge anchors each, giving 16 total anchor points per lift. Every anchor is torqued to the manufacturer spec (typically 110 to 140 ft-lb) and re-inspected annually. This is the load path for the whole vehicle: tire to runway to cross-tube to column to anchor to concrete. Any weak link at any point disqualifies the install.
Cross-Tube Design and Cable Sheave Layout
Between the columns, two heavy cross-tubes carry the runway assemblies and route the hydraulic cables. On quality auto storage lifts, the cross-tubes are 3/16-inch wall rectangular tube welded to the column carriages with full-penetration fillet welds. Inside each cross-tube is a set of cable sheaves that redirect the equalization cables from the central hydraulic cylinder to each of the four column carriages. This is what makes all four corners rise together at the same rate. Sheave bearings are sealed and greased at the factory, but require annual re-lubrication for the life of the lift. Cheap imports use unsealed sheaves that seize within a year or two, causing cable wear and uneven lift. We’ve seen that failure mode — it’s why we stick to ALI Gold certified units.
Hydraulic System — Cylinder, Pump, and Reservoir
The hydraulic system on modern auto storage lifts is deliberately simple. One cylinder, one pump, one reservoir. The cylinder is typically a 2-inch to 2.5-inch bore chrome-plated rod with double-lip seals rated for 3,000 PSI working pressure. The pump is either 110V single-phase (residential) or 220V single-phase or 3-phase (commercial), driving a gear-type or vane-type pump at about 2 gallons per minute. The reservoir holds 3 to 5 gallons of AW-32 hydraulic fluid. Full lift cycle from full down to full up runs about 45 seconds on the 110V unit and about 25 seconds on the 220V. Fluid should be inspected annually and replaced at 5-year intervals or when it darkens. Seals are the wear item; a rebuild kit is a two-hour job.

Parts Pipeline — Why It Matters in Year Ten
A 4-post lift is a 20-year purchase. In year one, everything works. In year ten, you’re going to need cables, seals, safety-lock springs, or a replacement sheave. That parts pipeline is the reason we recommend brand-name lifts over anonymous imports. When the import brand disappears in five years (which several have), you’re on your own for parts. This is the single most under-appreciated factor in a lift-buying decision.
