Branch one: the tight budget — one four-post, no accessories
If you are building out a first shop and the whole lift budget is a few thousand dollars all-in, we point Davenport buyers at a 9,000 lb Atlas or BendPak four-post with the base runway package, no rolling bridge jack, no aluminum ramps, no drip trays. What you give up is the ability to do suspension work from up top — no bridge jack means the wheels stay on the ground when the runways are up. The base lift will not carry the workload past year one, and stepping up the initial spec is cheaper than replacing later.
Branch two: mid-range — one four-post with a rolling bridge jack
Add a bridge jack and the lift becomes a real work bay, not just a storage stand. Auto storage lifts with a jack option let you pull wheels, service brakes, swap coilovers, and align — all from up top with the vehicle at working height. This is the config we sell most often in the Davenport metro for one-lift racing shops. Total investment lands in the mid four figures for the lift, add-on jack, and freight.
For a crew chief, this is usually the right first move. You store the primary race car up top when the trailer is on the road, drop it down for prep the week of an event, and use the same lift plus jack for daily-driver maintenance in between. The workflow constraint at this tier is that you have exactly one bay — so when the race car is on the lift for prep, the daily maintenance queue backs up. Most Davenport shops we know at this level bought a second lift within eighteen months of the first. Branch three: two-lift racing bay — four-post plus mid-rise scissor
A four-post with a bridge jack next to a mid-rise scissor is the racing-team crew chief’s dream layout, and it is what we build out most often in serious Davenport race shops. The four-post carries the race car for storage between events and full-height suspension work; the mid-rise handles quick brake bleeds, tire mounts, and rotor swaps for the tow vehicle and the crew’s daily drivers. Bay layout matters at this stage. The four-post drives forward or backward and needs a straight-shot approach; the scissor lives closer to the toolbox wall since it does not need drive-on clearance. Compressed air comes down the toolbox side, hose reels overhead. The typical mistake is putting the four-post along the wall with the toolbox on the far side — you spend the entire race weekend walking around the lift. Put the tools next to the primary work bay. Branch four: three-lift or dedicated race shop

BendPak XPR and Atlas TD series are respectable for lighter workloads, but if you are running a car twenty-plus race weekends a year and storing it on the lift every week in between, commercial-grade is the honest recommendation. The two-post next to the four-posts is where the frame-off restoration lives on the winter downtime slate. Branch five: the storage-only special case
Not every Davenport lift customer works on cars. Some just want to double their garage footprint by stacking two vehicles on auto storage lifts and never touching a wrench. If that is you, we spec differently: lighter-duty 7,000 lb Atlas four-post, no bridge jack, drip trays included, and we spend more time on the ceiling-height math than on the workflow math. The lift becomes a parking structure, not a work bay.
The trap here is buying a storage-only lift and then deciding two years in that you actually do want to change your own oil. Storage-class lifts do not always take a bridge jack as an add-on — the runways are not always drilled for it, and the frame may not be rated for the concentrated point load. If there is any chance you will want to do maintenance from the lift in the future, spend the extra few hundred dollars now for a lift that can accept a jack. We have seen this specific mistake enough times to say it plainly: a $500 upcharge today is cheaper than a $4,000 lift replacement in year two. Branch six: matching the bay to the driveway approach
Racing-team shops in Davenport almost always have a trailer parked in the driveway. The lift bay layout has to account for how the race car gets out of the trailer and onto the lift without the tow vehicle blocking the shop door.
