Auto Storage Lifts: Pre-Purchase Checklist for Farm Shops

A farm shop owner outside Ames called us in February asking about a pair of auto storage lifts for his 40×60 machine shed. He runs suspension work on his own trucks and the neighbor’s rigs: shocks, struts, the occasional ball joint on a 3/4-ton. He also wanted to know what the lifts would be worth in eight years if he sold the shed and moved closer to town. Fair question. Farmers think about depreciation and resale in a way that city customers rarely do. Below is the pre-purchase checklist we built for him, plus an honest read on what used lifts actually trade for in the Iowa market.

Capacity matters more than you think for suspension work

When you compress a coil spring or unload a strut on a lift, the vehicle center of gravity moves in ways that surprise home mechanics. Auto storage lifts rated for 9,000 pounds are plenty to hold a truck. They are not always the right pick for suspension work if your driveline sits heavy on one axle. For a rural shop that swaps shocks on 3/4-ton pickups loaded with a plow off-season, we push toward the 10,000 or 12,000 pound class rather than the 9K. The extra capacity is not about vehicle weight, it is about geometry stress when a technician pushes down on one corner with a spring compressor. Nobody gets hurt because a lift ran out of pound rating on a static vehicle. People get hurt because a lift flexed sideways under an unexpected side load. Farm shops that do their own suspension work should size up one class from the vehicle GVWR.

Ceiling clearance in a pole shed

Pole shed math tricks people. The advertised sidewall height is not the same as the clear height under a truss chord. In a 40×60 shed with a 12-foot sidewall, the low point under the truss is often 10 feet 6 inches, and any collar tie or purlin drops that further. A stacked pair of auto storage lifts with a full-size pickup on top needs about 11 feet 4 inches from slab to lowest obstruction, minimum. Before we quote, we ask for a photo up at the truss and the actual measured height at the lowest chord. Twice this year we have had customers order a lift for a shed they later realized would not clear the truck they wanted to store. If you are unsure, we drive out and measure. There is no charge for a site visit within about a two-hour drive of Ames.

Slab thickness and anchor pull-out on rural concrete

Rural Iowa slabs vary widely. Some are four inches with fiber mesh, some are six with rebar, some are three inches poured over a poorly compacted base by the previous owner in 1998. Auto storage lifts anchor with wedge anchors that need a minimum four inches of good concrete to hold their published pull-out rating. We drill a test hole and check anchor torque before we finalize the layout. In one Story County job last year, we had to core out four spots, pour anchor pads, and let them cure before we set the columns. That added three days to the install and about the cost of a decent set of tires. Better to know before delivery day than during it. If your slab is unknown, expect us to test-drill before we finalize install day.

Trade-in and resale value of storage lifts

Here is the real answer on used lift value. A well-maintained pair of 4-post auto storage lifts from a name-brand manufacturer holds roughly 55 to 65 percent of original retail at the eight-year mark, if the cables and hydraulic system have documented service. A pair with unknown service history drops closer to 30 percent. A pair from a brand nobody has heard of drops to almost nothing. We get calls every month from people trying to sell no-name imported lifts and we cannot resell them because our shop warranty would not cover parts we cannot source. Brand choice for shops that trade equipment

For a farm shop planning to keep lifts eight to ten years and then sell, we recommend BendPak or Atlas in the home and light-commercial class. Both have established U.S. parts distribution, ALI Gold certified models, and a secondary market that a private seller can turn into cash inside two weeks. We do not recommend private-label imports for a resale-conscious buyer, regardless of the price on day one. The savings evaporate the moment you go to sell. For heavier duty operations that mix truck work with the storage function, we lean Rotary at the 12,000-pound class because the parts pipeline is even deeper. Sizing and brand are not decisions to shortcut on the front end.

Site prep, electrical, and delivery

Auto storage lifts run on standard 110-volt or 220-volt single-phase power depending on the model. Rural shops often have 110 at the shed and 220 at the well pump. If your shed has 110 only, we can spec a 110-volt lift, though the raise speed is slower and you will feel it after a few cycles. Delivery to rural addresses is straightforward: semis reach about 90 percent of the pole sheds we deliver to. If your driveway will not take a semi tractor and 53-foot trailer, we can transfer to a smaller straight truck at our warehouse for a small fee. Ask on the quote call. Print this checklist before you call us

Have these nine numbers filled in before you dial: shed dimensions inside the stud line, sidewall height, lowest truss height, slab thickness (drill a test hole in a corner), slab reinforcement type, electrical service at the shed, driveway access for a semi, vehicles you plan to stack, and eight-year plan for the property.
