When they work properly, arm restraints engage automatically as the arms are positioned under the vehicle’s factory lift points, and they stay engaged for the entire lift cycle. When they fail, either through wear or improper adjustment, the arms can rotate under load and shift the vehicle’s balance in ways that lead to slipping or dropping.
The daily inspection for arm restraints is simple: with the lift down, try to rotate each arm by hand. It should not move. If it does, the restraint is worn or out of adjustment and needs immediate attention before the lift is used. A spotter, standing at the far end of the lift with clear sight lines, calls out the position as the vehicle approaches. On drive-off, the same three principles apply in reverse.
