Planning an autolift garage for a Cedar Rapids EV specialty shop means running into questions most 2-post installers have never had to answer. Rivians, F-150 Lightnings, Model X, ID.4 — every one of them changes assumptions built into a standard garage build. We install and service lifts across Iowa, and roughly half the EV shops we’ve helped set up in the last year got sold hardware that didn’t fit their concrete, their ceiling, or the CV axle work that pays the bills. Here are five myths we’ve watched knock installs sideways.

Myth 1: My Existing Slab Is Fine
The single biggest failure we see is a shop building a lift around whatever concrete is already there. A residential 4-inch slab poured 20 years ago at whatever the crew felt like that afternoon is not a lift pad. A 2-post asymmetric rated for 10,000 lb needs at minimum 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete under each column, and most manufacturers spec 4 to 6 inches depending on capacity. EVs make this worse — a loaded Lightning is 7,000-plus lb dry, and CV axle work loads the columns unevenly. Before we quote a Cedar Rapids install, we core-sample the slab in both column locations. A slab that fails the core gets a saw-cut and pour of new pad footings, roughly a modest four-figure add. Skipping that step is how columns walk on wet years and how anchors pull. If your building is under 10 years old and was designed as a shop, the concrete is usually fine — everything older gets tested.
Myth 2: Twelve Feet of Ceiling Is Plenty
Twelve-foot side walls on a pole building sound tall until you park a Rivian R1S under a lift with the arms raised. Overall lift height on a two-post asymmetric with an overhead shutoff bar runs 12 feet 2 inches to 12 feet 10 inches depending on model. Add another 6 inches for the roof member you actually have to clear, and you are already over a nominal 12-foot ceiling. We check ceiling with a laser, at the lift location, from finished floor to lowest obstruction (rafter, purlin, ductwork, lighting). For a Cedar Rapids EV shop that plans to raise a Model X’s dual-motor unit to eye level, we spec a baseplate two-post with no overhead. Baseplate lifts run about 10 to 11 feet overall — comfortable inside a 12-foot ceiling — but the trade is a lower crossover bar and a plumbing job through the floor. That is a real autolift garage design decision, not a preference.
Myth 3: The Dryer Circuit Will Run It
Every couple of months, someone asks whether a 30-amp dryer plug in the corner will run a two-post. It will not, and this is the second most common autolift garage delay we see. Most single-phase two-post lifts sized for EV work draw a dedicated 220-volt, 20 to 30-amp circuit through a fused disconnect within reach of the operator — not a bare outlet buried in a wall. Three-phase 208-volt or 220-volt options exist and are faster, but almost no Cedar Rapids shop is on three-phase without a phase converter. We map the panel, calculate available capacity, and either wire the disconnect ourselves through a licensed EC or hand off a plan to the shop’s electrician. If your panel is already maxed by lighting, an air compressor, a welder, and a heat pump, plan on a subpanel. That is a two-day electrician job, not a fifteen-minute swap.
Myth 4: Any 7,000-Lb Two-Post Handles an EV
Rated capacity is only the first spec that matters when your autolift garage is built for EV service. Lift geometry matters more. Rivian’s battery pack skirt sits inches from the rocker on an R1T, and the rear pickup point sits significantly further back than an ICE truck’s — the arms have to reach it without hitting the pack. We spec Rotary or Challenger asymmetric two-posts with true asymmetric arms (short front, long rear) at 10,000-lb capacity minimum. The Model X is 5,500 lb curb, but the pickup-point spread pushes a 9,000-lb symmetric off the geometry chart. For CV axle work specifically, arms need to swing clear of the front subframe with the tire off — we field-check every lift we sell against actual EV pickup points, not a spec sheet drawing. Buying to nameplate capacity alone is how EV shops end up buying a second lift within a year.
Myth 5: Installation Is a Saturday Project
The last myth is that once the lift shows up on a pallet, a couple of guys with a forklift can bolt it down over a weekend. In practice, a two-post install in a Cedar Rapids EV shop runs a full day for two techs — sometimes two days if the concrete needs cutting or the electrical needs subpanel work. Anchors drilled to depth, columns plumbed within manufacturer tolerance, hydraulic hoses routed, cables tensioned, safeties tested empty, then tested loaded — none of that is optional or fast. We do the install ourselves on every autolift garage we sell in Iowa; the labor is bundled into a turnkey number, and it comes with the ALI safety verification the shop needs for insurance and any manufacturer warranty claim later. A weekend DIY save that voids the warranty and skips ALI verification is not a save.
What a Real Cedar Rapids Autolift Garage Site Survey Looks Like
A proper site survey for an autolift garage takes about ninety minutes on-site. We measure ceiling with a laser at the exact lift centerline, not the middle of the room. We core-sample concrete in two places if the slab age is unknown. We open the electrical panel, photograph the busbar, and count available breaker slots. We walk the bay to check bay width — a two-post needs about 12 feet of clear width between columns, and Iowa pole-building lean-to bays are frequently narrower than the drawing says. We ask about the vehicles you actually service — not the ones on the website, the ones on the schedule. How CV Axle Work Changes the Autolift Garage Layout
CV axle and half-shaft replacement is the daily-driver task an EV shop lives on, and it drives specific autolift garage geometry decisions. First, the arms have to swing wide enough for a tire to come off with a jack stand under the control arm — meaning arm restraint must retract or you need drop-in extensions. Second, the vehicle sits high enough for a full extraction of the shaft from the transmission — that is comfortable overhead work with a 10,000-lb asymmetric at full lift, tight with a 9,000-lb symmetric. Third, a torque-wrench setup for axle nuts wants a solid workbench inside the arm swing envelope.
