An autolift garage for a Des Moines metro EV specialty shop is one of the fastest-growing setups we build in Iowa, and it is also the one where the most site-prep myths refuse to die. General daily maintenance on Teslas, Rivians, Lightnings, and ID.4s reshuffles priorities that used to be settled — bay width, floor drainage, ventilation, and arm geometry all sit differently than they did for a gas-only shop ten years ago. Myth 1: Bay Width Doesn’t Matter Until You Miss By Six Inches

Bay width is the myth that sounds silly until a customer’s EV comes in eight inches wider than expected. A Rivian R1T is 79.6 inches wide at the fenders and 87.1 inches with the mirrors out. Add two feet of arm swing on each side to actually get around the vehicle with a jack stand, torque wrench, or tire cart, and a nominal 12-foot lift bay is exactly enough. Iowa pole-building bays framed to 11 feet 4 inches on center — very common in older Des Moines metro shops — will not clear. We measure column-to-column and column-to-wall on every autolift garage survey, and we flag any bay under 12 feet 6 inches inside dimension. The fix is either widening the bay (rarely worth it) or picking the specific lift model whose column footprint fits — some baseplate two-posts save six inches of bay each side over a symmetric overhead. That decision has to happen before the concrete work, not after.

Myth 2: EVs Don’t Drip, So Skip the Oil Separator

The most seductive EV-shop myth is that battery-electric vehicles don’t need floor drainage or oil-water separator plumbing because there is no oil to spill. It is wrong. Coolant leaks (Teslas and Lightnings both use elaborate coolant loops), brake fluid, gear oil from reduction units, ATF from the transfer case on dual-motor trucks, and wash-bay water all still hit the floor. Iowa DNR rules on shop drainage do not care whether the car has a tailpipe. Any autolift garage we build for a working EV shop includes a proper trench drain routed to an oil-water separator sized to the bay, plus a poly holding tank if the shop cannot connect to municipal sewer. That plumbing is trivial to include during the initial concrete pour and expensive to retrofit later. Plan it once.

Myth 3: You Can Park Two EVs in a One-Bay Autolift Garage

Storage stacking is the myth that costs the most in daily throughput. Owners assume that once a car is up on a two-post, they can slide another EV under it — turning one bay into two. Not on a working EV shop floor. First, most EVs cannot be safely parked under a raised vehicle because of egress rules and insurance requirements. Second, the underside of a raised EV is exactly where you need clearance to open the second EV’s doors, lift its hood, or plug in a charger. An autolift garage plan for a Des Moines metro shop that promises two EVs per bay throughput on paper does not deliver it in practice. Plan one working vehicle per lift bay. If storage is a real need — customer cars overnight, project cars long-term — a four-post storage lift in a separate bay does the job cleanly.

Myth 4: Wheelbase Doesn’t Matter for Two-Post Arms

The last hardware myth is the wheelbase question. Two-post arms are rated for a range of wheelbases — nominally 98 to 130 inches on a standard asymmetric — and long-wheelbase EVs push past that envelope. A Lightning is 145 inches wheelbase. An extended-length Model X sits at 116. A Rivian R1T is 135. Standard arms cannot reach both axles on the longer trucks — you need extended-reach or extended-length arm options, and those get ordered at lift purchase, not afterward. We field-check every Des Moines EV shop autolift garage build against the vehicles on the actual work order, and roughly a third of the time we spec extended arms as a line item. If your quote does not mention arm length, it is not complete.

Myth 5: Ventilation Is a Nice-to-Have

Ventilation is where EV shops relax and gas shops don’t — and it’s a mistake. Battery pack service means the possibility of thermal runaway, however rare, and even routine cell-balancing generates trace off-gassing. Iowa fire code on EV service bays is still catching up, but every autolift garage we build for an EV shop gets a proper exhaust plan: overhead exhaust fan sized to the bay, hydrogen and CO sensor at working height, and a clear egress path with no lift arms in the way. We work with a local mechanical contractor on the fan sizing, and we specify the sensor package. That is a one-time cost and a real safety margin. What a Des Moines Metro EV Shop Site Prep Actually Costs

Site prep for a Des Moines metro EV autolift garage — before the lift itself — typically runs one of three tiers. Tier one, an existing insulated pole building with a 5-inch shop-spec slab and 200-amp service, needs only a subpanel drop and drain scope, and lands in the low-four-figure range. Tier two, an older shop with 4-inch slab and dated electrical, adds a saw-cut for column footings, a subpanel and disconnect, and an oil-water separator install — mid-four figures to low-five. Tier three, converting a machine shed or barn, is a full concrete pour and a new service drop, and lands in the mid-five figures range. We scope every job in writing before quoting the lift, so the total number in the operator’s hand is the total number.

The Autolift Garage Layout for Daily EV Maintenance

Daily EV maintenance is a different rhythm than gas-shop service. Tire rotations, brake pad inspections (regen-braked pads last a long time but they still wear), coolant checks, cabin filter, wiper fluid, and the software-flash-plus-inspection appointments that many EV owners now expect. The lift bay layout has to support all of that: two-post with clear underside, a workbench inside the arm swing envelope, tire cart storage on the driver side, a dedicated 240V EV charge station for topping off customer cars during service, and OBD-II-style diagnostic tool storage within reach.
