A municipal fleet manager in central Iowa reached out about cylinder seals for an aging autolift garage his crew relied on for restoration work and metal fabrication on city-owned trucks. Two lifts were down, city vehicles were piling up, and the previous vendor had gone out of business years earlier. He needed rebuild kits, honest advice, and a plan to keep it from happening again. This is the safety-first rebuild walk-through we gave him, from diagnostic to a schedule that keeps seals alive twice as long as neglecting them does. It is also the story of how an unfamiliar brand does not have to be an unserviceable brand.

When cylinder seals need to be replaced

Hydraulic cylinder seals fail predictably: they fatigue, harden, crack, and then leak. The first sign is a slow drift downward when the lift is holding a load with the valve closed. The second is fluid weeping from the top of the cylinder, either around the rod wiper or from between the cylinder body and the gland nut. On a well-maintained autolift garage running clean fluid, urethane rod seals last twenty years or more. On a fleet lift running old fluid contaminated with water and metal fines, seals can go in five. The central Iowa fleet manager had both cylinders showing rod weep and one showing measurable drift under a loaded pickup. That is the point where you stop and rebuild before the seal fails catastrophically and a leaking cylinder drops a truck. Nothing about a seal replacement is heroic; nothing about a cylinder failure under a technician is acceptable. The moment you see visible weep on the rod, plan the rebuild. Waiting until it drifts under load is closing the barn door after the trucks have left.

Identifying the right rebuild kit for your lift

Identifying the correct seal kit is where things get tricky on older or off-brand autolift garage equipment. The kit depends on cylinder bore diameter, rod diameter, seal groove profile, and gland-nut style. Manufacturers publish kits by serial number for supported models; discontinued brands require measuring the cylinder yourself. We ask fleet customers to send us photos of the cylinder data plate, the gland nut (or a caliper measurement of it), and the rod diameter with vernier calipers. From that we can usually cross-reference a match from a hydraulic seal supplier and confirm before shipping. The central Iowa fleet had two cylinders on a discontinued lift brand and one on a Rotary two-post. The Rotary kit was in our warehouse; the discontinued-brand kit took a phone call to a seal manufacturer and a two-day lead time. He had been told by another supplier the lift was unserviceable and he should buy new. That was not true. Almost every hydraulic cylinder in a commercial autolift garage can be rebuilt with correct measurements and honest sourcing.

Sequence: bleed, break down, rebuild

The rebuild sequence for a two-post lift cylinder goes like this. Lower the lift completely and support the arms independently. Relieve system pressure by opening the manual lowering valve. Disconnect the hydraulic hose at the cylinder base and cap it. Remove the cylinder mounting pins top and bottom. Move the cylinder to a clean bench. Break the gland nut loose (usually a spanner-tool fit), slide the piston-and-rod assembly out, remove the old seals from the piston and gland nut. Inspect the rod and the bore. Install new seals in the correct orientation (lip pointing toward pressure), lubricate with the same hydraulic fluid the lift uses, and reassemble. Torque the gland nut to specification. Reinstall the cylinder in the lift, reconnect the hose, cycle the lift up and down several times to bleed air, top up the reservoir. Test under load. Every step matters. Skipping the pressure-relief step is how technicians get injured; skipping the cleanliness step is how new seals fail in six months. This is the sequence we walked with the central Iowa crew.

Chrome rod condition and when to replace

Chrome rod condition determines whether a rebuild lasts twenty years or six months. If the chrome is intact and smooth, new seals will run the design life. If the chrome is pitted, scored, or has visible corrosion, the new seals will chew themselves apart within weeks as the rod cycles. We inspect every rod under good light with the seal removed. Any pit deeper than a fingernail catches; anything you can feel with a fingernail across a horizontal line is a problem. Vertical scores parallel to rod travel are worse than horizontal marks. Light surface corrosion can sometimes be polished; deep pitting requires rod replacement. The central Iowa fleet had one rod with a shallow pit near the top of travel that we polished and reused; the second rod had visible corrosion from what had clearly been a slow leak sitting in fluid for months. We ordered a replacement rod for that cylinder and rebuilt it around the new rod. Reusing a bad rod to save $200 is a false economy on an autolift garage that has to hold city trucks safely for another fifteen years.

What we stock for common lift brands

We stock cylinder seal kits and hydraulic components for the brands we see most often in Iowa autolift garage service work: Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Forward, and Atlas. For discontinued brands we source from national hydraulic distributors, usually within 3 to 5 business days. Complete rebuilt cylinders are available for the most common lift models. New replacement cylinders (when a rebuild is not economical) run in the mid-hundreds to low thousands depending on capacity and bore. Hydraulic hoses in common lengths and fittings are on the shelf. Rotary and Challenger factory-original kits are always our first recommendation for supported models because they include the correct seal materials for the pressures and fluids those lifts run. Aftermarket kits work for many applications but occasionally use a seal compound that hardens faster in fleet-duty use. For the central Iowa fleet we specified factory kits for the Rotary cylinder and a matched-material aftermarket kit for the discontinued-brand cylinders, priced fairly so his budget did not have to eat a full lift replacement.

Restoration-shop lift use and cylinder wear

Restoration and metal-fabrication work is harder on lift cylinders than general repair. Restoration jobs sit under load for hours or days at a time while a technician sands, primes, welds, or fabricates. Standing under sustained load accelerates seal aging because the seal is under continuous pressure without cycling to redistribute lubrication. Weld spatter can pit chrome rods; grinder dust can find its way into cylinder wipers. If your autolift garage supports restoration or metal work, plan on a more aggressive seal-replacement schedule. We recommend inspection at year three and again at year six for restoration-heavy shops, versus a year-ten inspection cycle on general-repair lifts. Rod boots or bellows covers extend rod life significantly on restoration lifts by keeping grinder dust and weld spatter off the chrome. Fluid changes matter too; combustion soot and airborne fabrication dust find their way into reservoirs. The central Iowa fleet had exactly this profile: city trucks getting bed replacements, frame repairs, and paint prep. We recommended a rod boot upgrade with the cylinder rebuild, which added a small line to the parts bill and a decade to the expected rod life.

Fleet maintenance schedule that saves the seals

A fleet-scale autolift garage lives or dies on its maintenance schedule. Ours for a typical municipal or restoration shop looks like this. Weekly: cycle the lift through full travel with no load, exercise the safety locks, visually inspect for leaks and cable wear. Monthly: check hydraulic fluid level, inspect the rod wiper for weep, verify all anchor bolts still torque to spec. Quarterly: pull the reservoir cap, check fluid for water contamination or metal fines, replace the breather filter. Annually: hydraulic fluid and filter change, complete ALI safety inspection, torque check on all fasteners, rod condition photo record for trend tracking. Every three to five years: proactive seal inspection under load, replace any seals showing weep. This schedule takes about four hours a year per lift and doubles seal life. The fleet manager put it into his crew’s monthly preventive-maintenance rotation the day we finished the rebuild.
