Every autolift garage buyer eventually asks us the same question: how thick does the concrete really need to be? For a body shop foreman in Council Bluffs who is spec’ing a new bay or replacing an aging lift, the honest answer is that slab thickness and rebar layout drive the decision at least as much as brand or price does. Slab thickness is the first line item, not the last
The default requirement for most commercial two-post lifts is four inches of 3,000 psi concrete, measured to the actual bottom of the slab — not to the top of a topping pour that was added later. A body shop foreman who inherits a bay from a previous tenant usually has no idea what is under the sealer. Before we quote a Council Bluffs autolift garage, we do one of two things: pull a core sample, or use a rebar-and-cover meter to check both thickness and reinforcement. Neither test is expensive, and both are cheaper than tearing out concrete after a warranty denial.
If the slab is thin or unreinforced, you have three options: pour a footing pad under each column, replace the slab in the bay, or step down to a four-post lift that spreads the load across a larger footprint. Rebar, welded wire, and why they aren’t equivalent
Modern shop slabs are usually poured over #4 rebar in a grid, but older Council Bluffs shops sometimes have nothing but welded wire mesh — or nothing at all. Rebar in a grid gives you meaningful tensile capacity under a lift column; welded wire mostly controls surface cracking and does not carry the same shear load. When we test a slab and find only wire mesh, we treat the concrete more cautiously — usually specifying either a thicker equipment pad or a lift with a broader footprint that reduces the point load through each column.
For a body shop foreman spec’ing a new pour, our recommendation is straightforward: six inches minimum, 4,000 psi minimum, #4 rebar on 12-inch centers, with additional pad thickness under each planned lift column. That combination handles almost any commercial autolift garage you will ever buy, including 15K and 18K commercial two-posts if you decide to expand later. Overbuilding the slab at pour time is the cheapest engineering decision you will ever make. Rebuilding a slab under a working shop is the most expensive one.
Autolift garage capacity for body shop work
Collision work tends to run heavier than general service. A three-quarter-ton pickup with a plow and full frame comes in at 8,500 lb bare; add snow rings, tools, and a partial fuel tank and you are pushing 9,500. If your bay sees a mix of half-ton trucks, full-size SUVs, and the occasional dually, the honest capacity target for a body shop autolift garage is 12,000 lb, not the 10K that used to be standard. The extra capacity costs a modest premium at purchase and disappears entirely as a factor after the first year of use.
A 12K two-post from Rotary, Challenger, or BendPak still lifts a Corolla just as easily as a 10K does, but it gives you headroom for the vehicles that actually break the rating on a 10K. In collision work, capacity margin equals safety margin. We steer nearly every Council Bluffs body shop toward 12K on new installs, and we retrofit-upgrade existing 10K bays when the fleet mix shifts heavier over time. Capacity is one place where “just enough” is not the right answer for a shop that plans to be there in twenty years.
Two-post vs four-post for collision work
For a body shop foreman, the two-post versus four-post question usually shortcuts to two-post — you need underside access for panel work, and a four-post blocks the rocker and pinch-weld area. That is correct most of the time. Where four-posts earn their spot in a body shop is on the pull-rack side: a Chief or Car-O-Liner rack sits on a four-post foundation, and a dedicated frame straightening bay wants a different lift than a general repair bay. Every body shop we spec ends up with a two-post majority and one or two four-post bays for specific work.
The other reason we sometimes flip a body shop to four-post is EV work. High-voltage battery packs live under the floor pan on most modern EVs, and a two-post arm can contact battery structure if the arm placement is careless. A four-post with a rolling jack gives you cleaner clearance and a lower risk of denting a battery box worth as much as the vehicle. Any autolift garage plan for a body shop that intends to service EVs should have at least one four-post bay from the start of the build.
Overhead vs floorplate — the Council Bluffs ceiling question
Most Council Bluffs body shops we work with have 14- to 16-foot clear ceilings, which handles either overhead or floorplate two-posts. Overhead is the default because the crossmember carries the hoses and the equalization cables cleanly, and the ceiling is out of the way of tall vehicles. Floorplate lifts move the hydraulic and cable runs to a low crossover between the columns, which is what you want if you regularly lift very tall trucks or box vans and would otherwise hit the overhead bar.
The trade-off with floorplate is a bar across the floor between the columns — a trip hazard and a body dolly obstacle. In a busy collision bay, that is not the layout most foremen want. We recommend overhead for standard body work and floorplate only when the ceiling truly forces it. If your Council Bluffs building has 16 feet or more of clear height, overhead is the answer. Below 12 feet clear, you are almost certainly in floorplate territory or looking at a lower-column autolift garage variant that keeps overhead safe.
Hydraulic power unit and cycle-life considerations
A body shop cycles a lift more times per week than most other shop types — vehicles come up for panel access, come down for a template check, come up again for painting prep, come down for masking, come up again for the paint booth run. That cycling is what tests a hydraulic power unit. Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak all use commercial-grade power units rated for high cycle counts; the cheap imports sometimes use a lighter-duty pump that survives a two-bay independent but starts leaking in a busy collision shop by year three of steady service.
The other consideration is single-point vs dual-point hydraulic architecture. Most modern two-posts use a single power unit driving both columns through equalization cables and a chain-over-sheave system. When cables wear, they wear together, which makes cable replacement a predictable maintenance event. On a busy body shop autolift garage, we typically recommend a preventive cable and cylinder-seal service at year seven, well before failure, so no vehicle ever comes down unexpectedly during a paint job.
What the foreman should ask the installer before ordering
Before you sign a purchase order for a body shop autolift garage, ask the installer four questions. First: what did the slab test show, and what capacity does the concrete actually support? A vague answer means they didn’t test. Second: what is the ALI certification status of the exact model, not the model line? Some lines have certified and non-certified variants. Third: what is the warranty duration on structural, hydraulic, and wearing components separately? Buried single-figure warranties usually hide short coverage on the hydraulics.
Fourth: who does the warranty repair? If the installer says “call the factory,” walk away. A real installer handles the warranty claim on your behalf and shows up to do the repair. That is the answer for any professional autolift garage sale.
