That works fine for a compressor. It does not work for a lift, because the cables inside a 4-post or scissor autolift garage are wear items on a real schedule and a cable failure is the one lift issue that cannot be recovered from mid-lift. Understanding what the cable actually does
On a 4-post autolift garage the cables are the primary lifting element. Four cables run over sheaves at the top of each column, connect to the hydraulic cylinder at one end, and support the runways at the other. Every pound of vehicle weight and every ounce of runway weight rides on those four cables. On a two-post lift the cables usually run the synchronization system rather than the primary lift, but they are still critical because a synchronization failure lets one column drop faster than the other.
Weekend mechanics buying a first lift often do not understand which type they are looking at. A pre-purchase question we recommend every buyer ask is what the cables do on this specific model. If the answer is primary lift, cable inspection is critical. If the answer is synchronization, cable inspection is still important but the lock ladders provide additional safety margin.
Pre-purchase: what to look for in the cable spec sheet
Before you buy an autolift garage lift, look at the cable spec sheet. You want to see cable diameter, break strength, and safety factor. A good 4-post home lift uses at least 3/8-inch cable with a break strength that gives a safety factor of five or better over the lift’s rated capacity. Cheap lifts sometimes use undersized cable to save cost, and that is a red flag for long-term reliability.
You also want to see swage-fitting quality. The swage is where the cable is compressed onto its end fitting, and a poor swage will pull loose under load years before the cable itself would fail. Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas all publish their swage specs. If the brand you are considering does not, that alone is enough reason to walk away. Cheap swages are the single most common failure point on off-brand lifts.
Inspection interval one: after the first week
Cables stretch. That is not a defect, it is a property of steel cable under load. The first week of use on a new autolift garage will stretch the cables slightly, and the initial factory tension will no longer be exact. We tell every buyer to inspect and adjust cable tension after the first seven days, or after the first ten cycles under load, whichever comes first.
The check is straightforward: raise the lift to a mid position, look at all four cables against a reference like the edge of the column, and confirm that they all deflect equally when you push on each one with your finger. If one is noticeably looser or tighter, adjust the tension nut at the base of that column until they match. This ten-minute check prevents uneven runway wear and racking loads that shorten cable life.
Inspection interval two: every six months
After the first-week check, every autolift garage cable system needs a six-month inspection. Walk each cable end to end with a bright light. Look for daylight showing at the swage fitting, individual strands broken and sticking out of the lay, kinks or bird-cages, discoloration or heat damage, and corrosion in any spot. Any single one of those is a replacement condition, not a monitor-and-watch condition.
You should also inspect the sheaves at the top of each column. Sheaves are the small wheels the cable rides over, and they wear grooves that eventually shred the cable. If you can see wear grooves deeper than the diameter of the cable itself, replace the sheave along with the cable. Inspection interval three: every ten years
Even if the cables look perfect at every six-month check, replace them at ten years. Steel cable has a fatigue life independent of visible wear, and after enough cycles the internal strands can fail without external warning. Ten years is the industry standard replacement interval for a residential-use 4-post autolift garage lift, and we recommend it even to weekend mechanics who use the lift maybe fifty cycles a year.
Ten-year cable replacement on a residential 4-post runs a few hundred dollars in parts and about four hours of DIY labor if you are comfortable with a wrench, or a half-day service call from us if you would rather have it done professionally. Either way, it is cheap insurance against the one failure mode you cannot recover from. Transmission service and cable load
Weekend mechanics who use their autolift garage lift for transmission service are putting more cable load on the system than an oil-change owner. A transmission drop with a jack tray adds three to five hundred pounds to the vehicle’s static weight, and it does it at a specific point rather than distributed across the axles. This is well within a lift’s rated capacity, but it accelerates cable wear compared to lighter-duty use.
If transmission service is your primary work, we recommend inspecting cables every four months rather than every six, and replacing at eight years rather than ten. The lift will not tell you the difference is needed. This is a proactive schedule based on load pattern, and it is the same schedule commercial shops use on their high-cycle lifts. It costs almost nothing to run and it removes the worst-case failure entirely.
