The 90-Day Visual Inspection
Every 90 days on a working autolift garage, walk both cables end to end with a strong flashlight and your eyes about six inches from the strand. You are looking for four specific things. First, broken outer wires — even one broken strand is a warning, and three in a single lay length is a mandatory replace. Second, kinks or bird-caging where the strands have separated from the core.
Third, corrosion — surface rust is often normal in a Waterloo shop through the winter and can be wiped down, but pitting into the strands is not normal. Fourth, wear at the sheave contact zone. Cables show a polished flat where they run against the sheave under load, and eventually the flat wears deep enough that the cable diameter is reduced. When you start seeing more than a quarter inch of visible stretch between six-month checks, the cable has entered its wear-out phase. This is the time to schedule replacement, not to keep tightening.
Cable life on a well-maintained lift runs three to seven years depending on cycle count. A busy autolift garage doing high daily volume — think 30-40 lift cycles per day — will hit the shorter end. A family shop doing 5-10 cycles per day sits at the longer end. Neither number is a warranty. Both numbers depend on the environment: salt exposure in winter, oil contamination, humidity swings, and whether the shop is heated.
