An RV and trailer service shop in West Des Moines shared their first-year experience with us after they opened a new autolift garage for tire rotation and wheel work last winter. Their story is unusual because RV service work has a specific ceiling-clearance problem that a passenger car shop never worries about — RVs sit tall, and the lift itself needs enough clearance overhead to run a full stroke without kissing the shop ceiling. Week One: The Truck Arrives
Delivery day for a commercial 4-post lift is a small event. The columns ship in one crate, the runways in another, the crossbeams and cable assembly in a third, and the power unit in a small pallet-mounted box. Total delivered weight for the model they ordered was just over eleven hundred pounds. Their forklift handled it comfortably, but we tell every customer to stage the lift components inside the shop before install day rather than leaving them on the loading dock — Iowa winter weather can do things to un-boxed hydraulic components that shorten their service life by years.
The West Des Moines shop had a small snag on week one. Their forklift operator staged the runways with the crossbeams on top rather than the reverse, and by install day the runways had a barely-perceptible bow from the point-load weight. The Ceiling Height Reality Check

Two of the four fixtures had to be moved and rehung against the roof deck at a full 14 feet 10 inches. Small job, but their electrician needed a return visit. Door Swing And Column Placement
Their shop is a two-bay layout with an overhead door on the east wall and a personnel door on the north wall. The lift went into the west bay, positioned so the runways ran east-west parallel to the overhead door. That kept the drive-on approach clean and gave them a straight backing path from the lot into the bay. What they did not anticipate was that the west column of the lift ended up thirteen inches from a mounted electrical panel on the west wall.
Panel-side clearance for an autolift garage matters because you need work room to service the lift — hydraulic hose replacement, cylinder access, and the annual ALI-recommended inspection all require standing next to a column with tools. Thirteen inches is too tight. The shop ended up relocating the panel four feet to the north, which cost them a Saturday and a call to the electrician. That is a common miss on first-time commercial builds. When you position the lift, leave two feet minimum on every side of every column, and check for wall-mounted anything — panels, hose reels, tool boards — before you finalize the anchor pattern.
Month Three: What Surprised The Owner
Three months in, the owner told us the biggest surprise was how much shop workflow the lift had changed. They had planned it for tire rotation and wheel work, but within ninety days they were also using it for underbody rust inspection, water tank access, awning motor service, and any job that put a technician on his back for more than five minutes. Every one of those jobs was a job that used to happen on a creeper on cold concrete, and every one of them now happened at chest height in a warm shop. The productivity gain was measurable — they logged about a 20 percent faster average ticket for those jobs over the first quarter.
The second surprise was that the lift itself needed almost zero attention. Fluid check was clean, cable inspection showed no visible wear, and the hydraulic system held pressure between cycles without any drift. First Tire Rotation On The New Lift

Old workflow: floor jack and bottle jacks, one wheel at a time, roughly two hours per unit with two techs. New workflow: drive on, lift, sliding rolling jack under one axle at a time, all four rotated and torqued in under an hour with one tech. That single job justified about a fifth of the lift’s purchase price on their internal ROI math, and they run that job weekly.
