A small-fleet operator across the river in eastern Nebraska — Omaha metro, running a light-duty service and delivery fleet — asked us to quote an autolift garage for his new shop building. Two lifts, likely a two-post and a four-post, doing mostly exhaust and driveline access on his fleet of vans and light trucks. What made the quote interesting was not the lifts themselves; it was the freight and unloading. He was 220 miles from our Ames warehouse, on the wrong side of the Missouri River, and he did not own a forklift. This article compares the two configurations we quoted him and lays out the freight logistics we solved along the way — because those logistics change the total cost of an autolift garage more than most shop owners expect.

The workload: exhaust and driveline access, fleet cadence
His fleet was fifteen vehicles — a mix of Ford Transits, half-ton Silverados, and a couple of E-Series parcel vans he had bought used. The service workload was heavier on the exhaust and driveline side than on the brake side, because his routes were rural gravel-adjacent and his trucks were seeing more mechanical wear than typical urban fleet miles. Cats fouled early, mid-mufflers rusted out, and driveshaft carrier bearings needed attention on a 60,000-mile cycle.
Exhaust and driveline access means center-of-vehicle access, and center-of-vehicle access is where two-post versus four-post configurations diverge sharply. A two-post gives you the whole underside open, no runways in the way. A four-post has runways under the wheels and requires a rolling jack to lift the wheels for suspension or exhaust hanger work. For his workload, an autolift garage built around one two-post plus one four-post gave him coverage for both wheels-off and wheels-on service.
Configuration A: two two-posts
The first configuration we quoted was two Challenger E10 two-posts, 10,000 lb each, versymmetric. Total floor space required was about 480 square feet including walk-around. Both lifts could handle any vehicle in his fleet, both would work for exhaust and driveline access, and the setup gave him two identical bays that any tech could work in without switching workflows.
The downside of the two-two-post configuration is that he could not do overnight storage or full-day parking on either lift, because a two-post is not designed for extended static load with an unattended vehicle. If any of his fleet needed to sit in the shop overnight for a longer diagnostic, he would have to lower it and park it — losing a bay for the next-day work. For a shop that runs two shifts or does not need overnight storage, this is not an issue. For a shop with sporadic overnight jobs, it is a real friction point.
Configuration B: two-post plus four-post
The second configuration was a Rotary SPOA10 versymmetric two-post plus a Rotary SM14 four-post with a rolling jack, totaling about 640 square feet including walk-around. The two-post handled the bulk of the exhaust and driveline work; the four-post handled the wheels-on service, the tire rotations, and the overnight storage when a truck needed to sit.
The four-post also gave him a place to do alignment prep and squaring checks even though he was outsourcing alignment itself. And the runways gave him a natural drip-catch area for oil and diff-fluid service, which reduced his shop-floor mess dramatically. For a fleet autolift garage doing mixed exhaust, driveline, and general service on fifteen vehicles, this was the configuration we recommended.
Freight logistics: 220 miles to Omaha
Freight to Omaha from our nearest manufacturer warehouse ran about 20% higher than freight to Des Moines. The reason is not distance itself — 220 miles is a routine truck run — but rather the terminal handoff on the Nebraska side. LTL freight to eastern Nebraska frequently transfers through Omaha terminal, and terminal handoffs add cost per hundredweight compared to a direct Iowa delivery. On a two-lift autolift garage order, that surcharge was a real four-figure delta.
We negotiated a direct delivery from the manufacturer warehouse to his shop, bypassing the terminal, by scheduling the lift shipment with a specific carrier we work with that runs direct routes into eastern Nebraska. That saved him about a third of the freight upcharge. Not everybody gets that route — you have to know which carriers do direct-shop delivery and which route through terminals. Ask on the quote call.
Unloading without a forklift
His shop did not have a forklift. Each two-post ships as a pair of columns and a hardware crate, and each column weighs roughly 700 pounds on a pallet. A four-post ships in even larger crates. Unloading a two-lift autolift garage delivery without a forklift is not a job for two guys and a hand truck.
We arranged for the freight carrier to deliver with a liftgate truck, which gets the pallets off the truck bed and onto the ground. From there, we brought a pallet jack and a set of rollers with our install crew. Total on-site labor from truck arrival to lift installed was about ten hours for the pair, which is on the long end for us but reasonable for a no-forklift shop. Total cost comparison and the final call
Configuration B — two-post plus four-post — landed about 22% higher than Configuration A on hardware and freight combined. Install labor was similar, because the four-post takes about the same time to set as a two-post. Once we added in the overnight-storage productivity gain of the four-post and the reduced floor mess from the drip-catch runways, Configuration B paid back the delta in about eighteen months of fleet operating cost.
He signed Configuration B. His autolift garage is now running two shifts on the two-post and using the four-post for one long-diagnostic vehicle per week plus tire rotations on Saturdays.
