The Quick-Lube Volume Math

A quick-lube shop is a specific animal. High vehicle throughput, short ticket time, high daily lift cycle count, mostly passenger cars, occasional pickup or crossover. That workload pushes the autolift garage design in a specific direction: mid-capacity (9,000 to 10,000 lb), asymmetric arms for door-clearance during service, and a duty cycle that will hold up to twenty to thirty lifts per bay per day for years without seal fatigue. It also means every configuration choice needs to be evaluated against ticket-time impact, not just purchase cost.

The Ames operator was quoting a two-bay build. Two identical lifts, same configuration on both, purchased and installed together to lock a package price. Two-lift builds usually save ten to fifteen percent on install labor over separate single-lift installs, because we can pour column anchors in one concrete pour, run electrical in one trench, and stage all the components in a single delivery. The trade-off is that the crossbeam sits about 12 feet 6 inches above the floor, which sets a hard minimum ceiling height for the shop. For a quick-lube with 14-foot ceilings, that is a non-issue.

Baseplate Configuration: Cost Breakdown

Baseplate 2-post lifts run the hose and cable across a floor-level crossbeam between the columns. The advantage is no ceiling height constraint — a baseplate lift will fit under a 10-foot ceiling comfortably, which opens the design to older shops with lower ceilings or to newer shops that want to save on building cost by not going full 14-foot. The trade-off is the crossbeam itself, which sits about six inches above finished floor and creates a small trip hazard and an obstruction to any wheeled equipment moving through the bay.

Cost profile for a baseplate lift is typically within a few hundred dollars of the equivalent overhead configuration at the equipment level, because the hardware differences are minor. Install labor is similar. Where baseplate saves real money is on the shop building itself — a shop with 11-foot ceilings versus 14 costs meaningfully less to construct, insulate, and heat over its lifetime. For a quick-lube autolift garage in Ames, where winter heating is a real annual line item, that heating savings compounded over twenty years often outweighs the small day-to-day inconvenience of the floor crossbeam. The Ames operator ended up choosing baseplate for both bays based largely on that lifetime heating math.

Concrete And Anchor Prep

The Ames shop was a new-build, so we were able to spec concrete on the front end. The base slab spec for a 10,000 lb 2-post lift is 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum. Anchor drilling and setting labor is included in our install package. What is not included, and what often surprises quick-lube operators, is the cost of coring test samples on an existing slab or the cost of a spot-pour repair if the existing slab fails the pull-out test. On new construction that risk goes to zero. On retrofits, budget a small contingency for anchor prep and be pleasantly surprised when it is not needed.

Electrical Hookup: The Real Number

Every 2-post lift needs a dedicated single-phase 220V circuit. Motor amperage draw at start-up is high but brief; steady-state draw is modest. For a two-lift quick-lube build, we typically recommend two dedicated 220V 30-amp circuits, one per lift, each on its own breaker in the main panel. If the panel is already full — as is common in a retrofit — a subpanel is the standard workaround and runs a few hundred dollars in materials plus a half-day of licensed electrician time.

The Ames operator’s new build had panel capacity, so his electrical line item was just the two dedicated circuits and a nearby duplex outlet loop for cordless chargers and shop-vac use. Total electrical bill from his contractor: modest, well under a thousand dollars for both bays. That is the correct number for a new-build with panel capacity. For a retrofit with a full panel, expect two to three times that number to include the subpanel and additional labor. Either way, electrical is a small line item against the lift itself and against the concrete, and it is almost never the constraint on the design.

Concrete Cutting And Rebar: If You Are Retrofitting

If your autolift garage is going into an existing slab that fails the pull-out test or that is thinner than the manufacturer spec, the standard fix is to core a two-foot-square section under each column, install new rebar-tied 4,000 PSI concrete to full lift-spec depth, and cure for two to four weeks before setting anchors. That retrofit runs a meaningful line item for a two-bay build — cutting, spoils removal, form work, pour, cure time, and re-finishing. Cost varies significantly by contractor and by whether the shop needs to stay operational during the pour.

The Ames build was new, so this line item was zero. For any retrofit quick-lube evaluating a lift install into an existing bay, we always pull a core sample first and quote the retrofit conditionally on the sample result. Nine times out of ten the sample comes back adequate for the standard anchor pattern; one time out of ten it does not and the retrofit becomes a real conversation. Knowing that number up front rather than finding it on install day is a huge cost-management win, and it is one of the reasons we insist on a site survey before we sign any install contract.

The Five-Year Total Picture
