What exhaust and driveline access actually demands from an autolift garage

Exhaust and driveline work has two constraints that eat into most home-lift specs. First, you need clear vertical space under the vehicle — no arms, no runways, no bridge blocking the driveshaft path. Second, you need to rotate a driveshaft or spin a hanger without the vehicle shifting under load. On a fleet bay along the Iowa-Nebraska border where you might see a service truck, a Sprinter, and a class-3 pickup in the same day, the autolift garage has to flex across weights from four to twelve thousand pounds. That’s a range where configuration choices actually matter. A pure two-post gives you the cleanest under-vehicle access anyone builds — nothing between you and the drivetrain. A four-post keeps the vehicle rock-solid on runways but adds a lengthwise bar you’ll be reaching around when the exhaust is between the rails. Both work; they work differently. For an autolift garage focused on exhaust and driveline, an asymmetric two-post with wide-swing arms is our default recommendation. You get complete underside clearance — no runways in the way. The vehicle sits on frame contact pads, which puts the driveshaft, transmission, and full length of exhaust at working height. Wide arms accommodate longer wheelbases so you can put a service truck on the same lift as a passenger van without repositioning between jobs. Capacity: 10,000 to 12,000 pounds for a fleet-grade unit, which covers most Iowa-Nebraska border rigs short of a class-4 truck. Downside: you’ll need appropriate slab thickness — usually 4.25 inches minimum — and any vehicle over the arm rating means a second lift, not a workaround. Configuration B: four-post drive-on with rolling jacks

The four-post drive-on with rolling jacks is the swiss-army answer. You drive on, click the locks, and the vehicle is stable enough to leave overnight. Rolling jacks slide down the runways and pick the axles when you need wheels-free for tire or driveline work. Trade-off: the runways sit under the vehicle and block a portion of your working space. On exhaust work between the rails, you’ll be reaching over a steel bar. On driveline work, the center of most trucks is between the runways so you’re usually clear, but you lose the completely open geometry of a two-post. Wins for the four-post: better under-frame stability, safer overnight storage of loaner trucks, and no anchor tension to maintain. Losses: rolling jack setup adds two minutes per lift versus the two-post’s one-step swing.

Side-by-side workflow: how each handles a Cummins-swap driveline

Consider a real job: dropping a two-piece driveshaft on a class-3 diesel pickup for U-joint replacement. On the two-post autolift garage, the truck comes up on frame pads, the driveshaft path is completely clear, and one tech can support the center bearing while a second drops the rear yoke. Total working time: usually well under an hour. On the four-post, the truck drives on, rolling jacks lift the axles for shaft rotation clearance, and the tech works around the runway rails at the center bearing. Total working time: usually 15 to 25 percent longer, mostly setup and reach-around. Neither is wrong. If you do this job three times a week, the two-post pays for itself. If this is one of ten job types you rotate through, the four-post’s storage flexibility matters more.

Cylinder seals: the wear item nobody quotes up front

Every hydraulic lift lives or dies on its cylinder seals. Under fleet cycling — say fifteen to thirty lifts per week — cylinder seals in an autolift garage will start weeping somewhere between year five and year ten depending on brand and fluid quality. On a two-post, there are typically two cylinders (one per column) so a seal job is two rebuilds. On a four-post, there’s usually one primary cylinder plus the rolling-jack cylinders — a similar total count but different accessibility. The tell that seals are going: a small hydraulic weep on the rod, slower descent, or a lift that settles a few millimeters overnight. Ignore it and you’ll eventually get a full failure. Rebuild kits vs full cylinder replacement

A seal rebuild kit for a fleet-grade lift cylinder runs a couple hundred dollars in parts, plus a few hours of labor to R&R the cylinder. A full cylinder replacement runs several hundred to over a thousand depending on brand and stroke. On the brands we stock — Rotary and Challenger commercial — rebuild kits are readily available and cylinders are designed to be resealed multiple times over the lift’s life. On some import brands, cylinders are sealed units that get replaced as a whole. That’s a real long-term cost difference that never shows up on a purchase quote.
