An autolift garage in an RV and trailer shop plays by different rules than a car garage. What an RV and trailer autolift garage has to handle differently
Trailers don’t have engines and RVs don’t have short wheelbases. That combination changes the autolift garage spec compared to a car shop. First, wheelbase — a fifth-wheel trailer coming in for axle work or a class-A motorhome coming in for driveline work needs a lift with 40+ inches of arm reach and column spacing that fits a wide track. Then we put a test weight on it — a shop truck we brought along — and ran three cycles to verify. Total install time from truck arrival to first working cycle was under a day. The owner drove a customer trailer on for the first real job the same afternoon. Week six: first hard exhaust job on a fifth-wheel hitch chassis
Six weeks in, the shop pulled in a diesel dually with a fifth-wheel hitch installation gone wrong — the previous shop had clearance-cut the exhaust in the wrong place and it was leaking at the flange. Month three: workflow adjustments we didn’t anticipate
Three months in, the shop had adjusted its bay layout around the new autolift garage in ways we hadn’t fully predicted. The parts bench moved to the passenger side because that’s where the tech naturally reached during exhaust work. The air-line kit we installed on the driver-side column got a second run to the passenger column because the tech kept switching sides mid-job. And the shop added a second drip tray under the lift because trailer axle grease seeps everywhere. None of these were failures — they were the normal adjustments any working bay makes as it settles into a real workflow. Month nine: cylinder seal weep and how we caught it

Compare that to a full cylinder replacement — several times the cost, plus twice the downtime because you’re waiting on a cylinder to ship. The reason the rebuild option existed is because we sold the shop a lift with rebuildable cylinders. Some import brands ship sealed cylinders that can’t be rebuilt in the field — when those fail, you replace the whole cylinder or you replace the whole lift. What year two looks like based on year one
Year one told us this shop’s autolift garage will need one more cylinder rebuild around year seven or eight, based on the cycle count and fluid quality we tracked. The power unit will probably need a rebuild or replacement somewhere in the year seven to ten window. The anchors are still torqued to spec on the 12-month recheck. The arm-restraint pins showed early wear at month twelve and got replaced.
