An EV specialty shop owner in Urbandale called us last spring with a problem we hear more and more: he’d built out an autolift garage two years earlier, business had shifted heavily toward alignment work on electric sedans and crossovers, and the equipment he’d bought didn’t fit what he was doing anymore. He wanted to know what his existing lifts were worth on trade and what he should replace them with. The conversation turned into an hour of myth-correcting, because almost everything he’d assumed about alignment lifts and resale value was either outdated or flatly wrong. Myth One: Any Four-Post Lift Can Do Alignments

This is the expensive one. A standard four-post storage or service lift and a four-post alignment rack look similar in a catalog photo and are not the same machine. An alignment rack has recessed pockets at the front for turnplates and slip plates built into the rear of the runways, and — critically — it’s manufactured and certified to a tighter flatness and level tolerance across the runways. Alignment geometry depends on the vehicle sitting on a plane. If your runways deflect differently under load, your readings drift and you chase a spec that isn’t there.

The Urbandale shop had bought a service four-post because the price was attractive and figured he’d add bolt-on turnplate boxes later. Two years in, he was fighting inconsistent camber readings on a specific model line and blaming the alignment machine. It wasn’t the alignment machine. Retrofitting a service lift into an alignment rack is possible on some models with a manufacturer kit, but on many it isn’t offered at all, and cobbling it together voids whatever certification you had. If alignment is more than an occasional job in your autolift garage, buy the alignment version up front. The delta at purchase is real but it’s a fraction of what you lose in comebacks, wasted bay time, and a reputation for readings that don’t hold.

Myth Two: EVs Are Too Heavy for Normal Shop Lifts

Half true, and the half that’s wrong causes people to overbuy. A typical electric sedan lands somewhere in the 4,000 to 5,500 lb range. An electric crossover runs 5,000 to 6,500. Electric full-size pickups are the outlier at 6,500 to 9,500 depending on configuration. None of that exceeds a properly specified 12,000 or 14,000 lb four-post alignment rack, which is what most general shops buy anyway.

What actually changes with EVs isn’t gross weight, it’s weight distribution and lift-point geometry. The battery pack sits low and centered, so the center of gravity is different from a comparable gas vehicle and the front-to-rear balance shifts. On a two-post that matters a lot — arm placement has to account for it and you cannot improvise pickup points because the pack structure is right there. On a four-post alignment rack it matters much less, since the vehicle sits on its own tires. That’s one of the underrated reasons alignment-focused EV shops end up preferring four-post: you’re not making a judgment call about where to put a pad on a battery tray. If your autolift garage does a mix of alignment and general service, the usual answer is a four-post rack with a rolling bridge jack for wheels-free work, plus a two-post in a separate bay for teardown. Don’t let heavy-EV marketing talk you into a 20,000 lb rack you’ll never load past 7,000.

Myth Three: Resale Value Comes Down to Brand Name

Brand matters, but it’s third on the list. What actually drives what somebody pays for used shop equipment, in order: current certification status, documented service history, and then brand. A well-maintained Rotary or Challenger rack with an inspection sticker and a folder of annual service records will sell fast and near the top of the market. The same model with an expired inspection, missing manual, and no records sits.

We buy, sell, and broker used equipment across central Iowa constantly, and the pattern doesn’t change. Two identical alignment racks come up, both about eight years old. One has clean runways, intact turnplate pockets, an ALI-certified inspection from the last twelve months, and receipts showing cable replacement at year six. The other looks fine but the owner shrugs when you ask about service. The first one moves at a strong number. The second one takes months and lands well under. Certification and paperwork are cheap to maintain — an annual inspection is a few hundred dollars and takes an hour. Skipping it to save that money is the most reliable way to destroy several thousand dollars of resale value in your autolift garage. If you plan to trade up in five to seven years, treat the service binder as part of the asset.

Myth Four: Cables and Cylinders Are Consumables You Ignore Until They Fail

On a four-post, the equalization cables are the whole safety system. They carry the load, they keep the runways level, and they’re the component most likely to be neglected. Manufacturers generally want them inspected annually and replaced on a schedule based on cycles and condition — broken strands, corrosion, flattening at the sheaves, or any stretch that puts the runways out of level. In a shop doing high-volume alignment work, cables see far more cycles than a storage lift and wear proportionally faster.

Here’s where it ties back to resale. A buyer inspecting a used alignment rack will run a hand along the cables and look at the sheave grooves within the first two minutes. Frayed cable is an immediate discount or a walk-away. So is a weeping cylinder seal or a rusted rod. Both are inexpensive to address on schedule and expensive to address as an emergency, and both are visible to anyone who knows what they’re looking at. Myth Five: Installation Is a Line Item You Can Cut

The Urbandale shop’s original four-post was installed by a general contractor who was already on site doing the buildout. It was level to a carpenter’s standard, which is not level to an alignment standard. Correcting it later meant shimming the columns, re-tensioning cables, and a half day of labor that would have been unnecessary if it had gone in right the first time.

Alignment racks specifically have to be set to tight cross-runway and front-to-back tolerances, verified with a precision level or laser, and then re-checked after the first few load cycles as everything settles. The turnplate pockets have to be coplanar with the runway surface. The rolling jack, if you’re using one, has to track without binding across the full length. None of that is exotic work, but it’s work that somebody who installs racks routinely does automatically and somebody who doesn’t will get approximately right. In an autolift garage where alignment is your revenue, approximately right is a slow leak. Factor professional installation in at purchase, get the level certification documented, and put that documentation in the same binder as your annual inspections. It pays you back twice — once in readings you can trust, and again when you sell. What We’d Actually Recommend for an EV Alignment Shop

For a shop in the Des Moines metro doing primarily EV alignment with some general service, the configuration we’d spec most often is a 12,000 to 14,000 lb four-post alignment rack with front turnplates, rear slip plates, a rolling bridge jack, and an air or electric-hydraulic power unit sized for your duty cycle. Add a two-post in an adjacent bay if you’re doing suspension teardown, brake work, or anything that needs the wheels off and the underside open. That combination covers the overwhelming majority of what walks through the door and doesn’t leave you paying for capacity you’ll never use.

Whatever you choose, keep the inspection current, keep the service records, and replace cables on schedule rather than on failure. Those three habits are worth more to the eventual resale of your autolift garage than the badge on the column.
