What an Alignment-Capable Autolift Garage Actually Needs

Not every two-post lift is built for alignment work, and this is where a lot of dealerships get burned buying on price alone. An alignment lift needs a wider drive-through than a standard service lift — typically 12 feet or more between columns versus the 10-foot spacing common on general-purpose lifts — plus a runway or turn-plate arrangement that keeps the vehicle level and accessible from all four corners. If your autolift garage is going to double as an alignment bay, you also need enough overhead clearance for the alignment camera towers or targets, which pushes ceiling height requirements up compared to a basic oil-change bay.

We size these jobs off actual vehicle mix. A dealership doing mostly half-ton trucks and SUVs needs different arm reach and lifting capacity than one running mostly passenger cars. Rotary and Challenger both build alignment-specific two-post and inground models with the runway width and lock points that alignment equipment expects. Getting this wrong up front — buying a standard-height 9,000 lb lift and trying to retrofit alignment capability later — almost always costs more than speccing it correctly on day one, and we walk every dealership through that math before they order anything.

Real Dimensions: Bay Width, Column Spacing, and Ceiling Height

Numbers matter here more than in almost any other lift conversation. For a two-post alignment lift, we’re typically looking at column spacing between 12 and 13 feet, an overall lift footprint that needs 14 to 16 feet of clear bay width once you account for the columns themselves and swing clearance for the arms, and a minimum ceiling height around 13 to 14 feet if you’re running overhead alignment camera targets. A drive-on alignment scissor or four-post can run a bit lower overall but needs a longer runway — often 20 feet or more end to end — to give techs room to set the vehicle and work the wheels.

We’ve walked into more than one dealership bay that was framed years ago for a lube rack and simply can’t accommodate true alignment geometry without structural changes. That’s not a knock on the shop — building codes and bay layouts from 20-plus years ago didn’t anticipate today’s alignment equipment. Before we quote anything, we ask for actual bay measurements, door height, and any obstructions like overhead ductwork or sprinkler lines. Concrete thickness and rebar matter too; a lift rated for 12,000 lb still needs adequate slab to anchor into, and we check that before install, not after.

Twenty-Year Cost of Ownership, Not Just Purchase Price

This is the core of the question the service manager asked us, and it’s the right question. A lift purchase price is maybe 40% of what that piece of equipment actually costs a dealership over 20 years once you factor in annual inspections, cable or cylinder replacement, hydraulic fluid service, and eventual major rebuilds. We’ve serviced two-post lifts that are pushing 24 years old — a Forward DP97A2 we recently worked on was installed in 2001 and is still running, but it’s needed cylinder work and cable replacement multiple times along the way.

Cheaper lifts with thinner steel or lower-grade hydraulic components tend to need cable and cylinder attention sooner and more often, which adds up in labor and downtime, not just parts. A well-built alignment lift from Rotary or Challenger, inspected annually and serviced on schedule, spreads its cost out predictably. Dealerships running quick-lube or multi-bay operations especially benefit from thinking in 20-year terms, because a lift going down unexpectedly in a busy service drive costs far more in lost throughput than the maintenance would have. Concrete, Freight, and What Install Day Actually Looks Like

Before we ship anything, we ask the same handful of questions every time: is there a loading dock or forklift on site, is there a pit or is this a surface-mount install, and what’s the concrete condition and age. Dealership service bays usually have decent slab, but older buildings sometimes have thinner concrete in back bays that were added on later — and that changes anchor bolt selection and sometimes requires a slab evaluation before we’ll install.

Freight timing is its own conversation. Alignment lifts and their runways ship heavier and often on multiple pallets, and lead times can run several weeks depending on the model and options. We coordinate delivery windows so a dealership isn’t sitting with a lift on the dock for days while service bays wait. On install day itself, our crew handles anchoring, hydraulic hookup, and calibration, and we walk the service manager through operation and initial lock-point setup before we leave, so the first alignment job on that lift goes smoothly, not experimentally.

Choosing Between Two-Post, Four-Post, and Inground for This Use

A lot of dealerships default to two-post because that’s what they’ve always had, but for a dedicated alignment autolift garage bay, four-post drive-on lifts with alignment runways are worth serious consideration, especially for higher-volume shops. A four-post keeps the vehicle’s suspension in a natural, loaded position throughout the alignment, which some techs prefer over a two-post’s frame-contact lift points. Inground lifts solve floor-space and sightline issues entirely but cost more upfront and need pit construction, which isn’t always practical in an existing building.

We don’t push one style over another blindly. If a dealership already runs alignment on two-post and their techs are comfortable with it, staying two-post but upgrading to true alignment geometry is often the more cost-effective path than tearing out and reconfiguring for a four-post. If the bay is brand new construction or a full renovation, that’s the moment to seriously evaluate a four-post or inground setup, because retrofitting later is far more disruptive and expensive than building it in from the start.

Inspection, Warranty, and Keeping the Lift Aligned Over Time

An alignment lift that isn’t square defeats its own purpose — if the lift itself has settled or shifted, every alignment reading coming off it is suspect. Annual inspections matter more here than on a general-purpose service lift, because small deviations in level or cable tension can throw off alignment readings long before they’d cause a safety concern on a standard lift. We check anchor torque, cable and cylinder condition, and overall lift level as part of every inspection we run for dealership customers, and we document it, because that paperwork matters for insurance and manufacturer warranty compliance.

Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and by whether the lift is under a fleet or multi-location agreement, which many dealership groups negotiate directly. We handle warranty service calls regardless of where the lift was originally purchased, and we keep records on every lift we service so a dealership doesn’t have to track paperwork across multiple locations or previous managers. For a piece of equipment meant to run reliably for two decades, that ongoing service relationship matters as much as the install itself.
