Myth #1: An Autolift Garage for EVs Needs a Completely Different Lift

The biggest myth we hear is that an EV specialty shop needs exotic, EV-only lift equipment. It’s not true. A well-built two-post lift like a Rotary or Challenger unit, rated appropriately for EV curb weights, handles differential fluid service on most EVs just fine. What matters more is arm configuration and pad placement, since EV battery packs and rear differential housings sit in different spots than a traditional drivetrain. We walk customers through pad positioning on the actual vehicle they service most, not a generic chart.

Where shops actually get into trouble is buying a lift rated for a lighter class of vehicle because it was cheaper, then discovering their EV lineup pushes past the safe capacity once the battery pack is factored in. We always ask what’s coming through the door before we quote a lift. A shop doing diff service on heavier EV trucks needs different capacity than one servicing smaller EV sedans, and that decision shapes the whole autolift garage plan, not just the lift itself.

Myth #2: Bay Layout Doesn’t Matter for Fluid Service Work

Myth #3: Any Concrete Floor Will Work

We get this question on almost every install call: is the concrete actually ready? A lot of shop owners assume any slab will hold a lift, but thickness, cure time, and rebar placement all matter, especially for a two-post configuration bearing full EV weight plus service loads. Before we schedule an install crew, we ask about slab age and thickness because pouring new concrete for an EV bay isn’t the same spec as a standard oil-change bay.

A shop with lower ceiling clearance might do better with a different arm reach or a lift positioned closer to a side wall to maximize usable headroom once the vehicle’s up. Myth #5: One Lift Layout Fits Every EV Model You Service

EV shops that work on a mix of sedans, crossovers, and trucks often assume one lift position handles them all identically. Wheelbases and pad contact points vary enough between EV platforms that a layout tuned for a compact EV sedan can be awkward for a longer EV truck’s differential access. We recommend shops map out their two or three most common EV models and confirm pad reach and arm swing work for all of them, not just the newest one in the lot.

Myth #6: Warranty and Service Support Don’t Matter Until Something Breaks

We hear from shop owners who picked a lift on price alone and didn’t think about service support until a cylinder started leaking or a cable needed replacing.
