Differential fluid changes look simple on paper, but the loading pattern is rough on a lift’s arm restraints. You’re often dropping a pan, working under the rear axle with a jack or transmission stand braced against the frame, and shifting weight side to side while the vehicle sits well above waist height for long stretches. Every time someone bumps a fender or leans on a quarter panel while draining fluid, the vehicle rocks slightly on its pads. Walk the bay, run each lift through a full cycle, confirm every tech can identify what a properly seated arm restraint looks like versus one that’s not fully engaged. We also talk through drive-on versus symmetric/asymmetric two-post configurations depending on whether alignment work is a big part of the mix. A drive-on lift or four-post setup with alignment-ready decking might make more sense if alignment is your bread and butter, while a true two-post gives better underbody access for differential and drivetrain work. There’s no single right answer — it depends on your ticket mix, and that’s the kind of conversation we have with every shop before recommending equipment for an autolift garage.

What to Do If You Inherited an Older Lift With Unknown Safety History

A lot of shops along the border buy into an existing building with lifts already installed, and nobody has paperwork on when the arm restraints or cam systems were last serviced. That’s a common situation, and it’s not something to guess your way through.
