If you run a European-marque specialty shop anywhere along the Iowa-Illinois corridor, you have probably heard some version of this myth: any autolift garage setup will handle a vintage Porsche unibody or a BMW E30 project the same way it handles a Silverado oil change. We hear it from restoration shops constantly, and it is simply not true. Myth One: Any Autolift Garage Will Work for Unibody Cars

The biggest myth we run into is that any autolift garage setup handles unibody European cars the way it handles a domestic truck. Unibody chassis on a 911, an old Alfa, or an early 3-series do not have the same frame rails a Silverado has. Lift pad placement matters enormously, and a generic two-post arm swing set up for pickups will chase and pinch on a low, narrow European body. We spec the arm reach and pad kits specifically for the vehicle mix a shop tells us about before we ever quote the job.

We have had restoration shops call us after buying a lift off a general listing site, only to find the arms will not tuck under rocker pinch welds without a spacer kit. On a metal-work bay where the car might be up on the lift for days with panels off, that pad placement is not a minor annoyance, it is a safety issue. Before you sign for any lift, tell your installer exactly what you work on. A shop doing Land Rover unibody work and a shop doing Mercedes W123 restorations need different arm configurations, even if the tonnage rating looks identical on paper.

Myth Two: Two-Post Is Always Wrong for Low European Cars

The opposite myth also circulates: that two-post lifts cannot handle low-slung European cars at all, and that a shop needs a scissor or a four-post drive-on. That is not accurate either. A properly speced two-post with the right adapter and stack height, like the frame-engaging setups we install regularly, handles most European sedans and coupes fine. The real issue is ground clearance under the rocker and the pinch weld location, not the two-post design itself.

What actually matters for restoration and metal work is whether you need full underbody access with the car suspended by the frame, or whether a drive-on four-post is better because the car has no safe frame contact point left after rust or cutting. We walk shops through both configurations honestly. Some corridor shops we work with run one two-post for general service and a four-post storage lift for project cars sitting mid-restoration, and that combination covers nearly everything a European specialty shop throws at it.

Myth Three: Parts Availability Does Not Matter Until Something Breaks

European specialty shops tend to think about lift brand the way they think about the car itself, chasing prestige names, and forget that parts pipeline matters more than badge. When a cylinder starts leaking or a cable frays on a lift that has been in service for a decade, you need a supplier who can get you the exact part, not a generic substitute. This matters even more for a restoration shop, because down bays on a metal-work job do not just cost you labor hours, they cost you a car sitting disassembled with no clear finish date. We have fielded calls from shops that bought an off-brand lift years ago because it was cheaper, and now cannot find a seal kit or motor spec anywhere. Buying into a known parts pipeline up front is part of designing your autolift garage correctly, not an afterthought you deal with later.

Myth Four: Concrete and Pit Readiness Are the Installer’s Problem, Not Yours

We get this one a lot from shops planning a new bay for European project work. The assumption is that whoever installs the lift will just make it work on whatever slab is there. In reality, concrete thickness and cure time drive whether a two-post can even go where you want it, and if you are planning an inground lift for restoration work, pit prep is its own project with its own timeline. We ask early about slab age, thickness, and whether there is a pit already, because that answer changes the quote and the schedule significantly.

We also always ask about forklift access on install day. If a shop can have a forklift on site for a couple of hours during delivery and setup, it genuinely speeds things up and can reduce cost. Most two-post commercial installs run about two days once material is on site, and freight timing on the lift itself is often the actual bottleneck, not our crew’s schedule. Plan your bay layout and concrete work months ahead of the install date, not the week before.

Myth Five: Extended Height Lifts Fit in Any Bay

Ceiling clearance gets overlooked constantly, especially in older corridor buildings that were never built with lift equipment in mind. We have had shops request extended-height lifts only to realize the garage door opener or overhead ductwork sits well within the swing clearance the taller columns need. That is a real conversation we have on nearly every commercial quote, because retrofitting an old body shop building is different from building new.

For restoration and metal work specifically, height matters because you often want a car up high enough to work standing rather than stooping, but you also need clearance for the vehicle’s own height once it is lifted, plus any roof racks, exhaust work, or fixtures the metal team uses. We measure ceiling height, obstruction points, and door opener clearance before quoting extended columns, and we will tell you straight if a standard-height lift is the smarter, cheaper call for your building rather than pushing an upgrade you do not need.

Myth Six: One Lift Brand Covers Every Bay in a Multi-Bay Shop

Larger European specialty operations across the corridor sometimes assume they should standardize on one lift brand for every bay to simplify training and parts. That instinct is reasonable but often wrong in practice. A general service bay, a metal-work bay, and a paint prep bay have different needs. We regularly help shops mix a Rotary two-post for general service with a heavier Challenger commercial unit for a bay that handles bigger project cars or trucks in the same building.

What actually simplifies your operation is having one installer and one parts contact who knows your whole building, not one brand across every post. Myth Seven: A Cheaper Lift Now Saves Money Over the Restoration Shop’s Lifespan

The last myth is the most persistent: that a discount lift saves real money over time. For a restoration shop where a car might sit on a lift for weeks during metal work, uptime is the whole game. A lift built on a thin parts pipeline, with no rebuild kits available regionally, turns into a liability the first time a cylinder needs resealing or a cable needs replacing. We have seen shops save on the sticker price and then lose far more in downtime a few years later.

Building a serious autolift garage for European restoration and metal work means thinking about total cost across a decade, not the invoice on install day. That includes install quality, cylinder and cable serviceability, and whether your installer will still answer the phone in five years.
