We got a call last year from an EV specialty shop opening up in the Des Moines metro, and the owner asked us the same question almost every new shop asks: is a used two-post lift good enough for suspension and shock work on electric vehicles, or do they need to spend the extra money on new? He’d been told by a forum post that any autolift garage setup would work fine as long as the lift “held the weight.” That’s the myth we want to bust today, because building the right autolift garage around EV suspension work is not the same math as a gas shop, and getting it wrong costs more than the lift itself.

Myth One: Any Autolift Garage Setup Handles EV Weight the Same Way

The first myth we hear constantly is that weight capacity is weight capacity, and if a lift is rated for 12,000 lbs it doesn’t matter whether the vehicle is a gas pickup or an EV crossover with a battery pack running the length of the frame. That’s not how it works in practice. EV battery packs shift the center of gravity low and often shift it forward or rearward depending on the platform, which changes how the vehicle sits on the arms and pads during a lift. On a lot of EVs there are also fewer usable frame contact points because the battery enclosure covers the pinch welds a gas vehicle would use.

We’ve walked shops through this exact issue when they were setting up their first EV bay. A Rotary two-post rated correctly for the gross weight is only half the answer — arm reach and adjustable pad height matter just as much for getting proper suspension access on an EV. If a shop is doing shock and strut swaps regularly, a drive-on four-post or a lift with a rolling jack bridge is often the smarter autolift garage layout than a straight two-post, because it gives techs a stable working platform without hunting for pinch welds that don’t exist anymore.

Myth Two: Used Lifts Are Always the Cheaper, Smarter Choice

We understand the appeal. A new shop watching every dollar looks at a used two-post lift for a fraction of new pricing and assumes they’re getting the same equipment for less. Sometimes that’s true. Sometimes it isn’t. We’ve inspected used lifts that came out of shops doing heavy commercial work, and the cylinders, cables, and safety locks showed wear that wasn’t visible until we had it apart. On a suspension bay running EVs all day, that lift is cycling constantly, and worn components fail faster under repeated load than they would in a shop doing occasional oil changes.

Our honest answer to the EV shop owner in the Des Moines metro was this: buy used when you can verify the service history and have someone qualified inspect the cylinders, cables, and locks before it goes in the bay. Buy new, or buy a factory-reconditioned unit from a dealer who stands behind it, when you can’t verify that history or when the lift is going to be your primary suspension and shock station running multiple vehicles a day. A used Challenger or Rotary with documented maintenance can be a great value. An unknown lift from an auction with no paperwork is a gamble you’re taking with a technician standing under a vehicle.

Sizing the Bay for Suspension and Shock Work, Not Just Storage

A lot of shops size their autolift garage bay for the vehicle and stop there, forgetting that suspension work needs more clearance than an oil change or tire rotation. Shock and strut jobs mean techs need swing space for spring compressors, extended reach for coil-over tools, and enough headroom to work at full extension without the vehicle in the way. We’ve been called out to shops after the fact to explain why their new lift doesn’t give techs the room they expected, and it almost always traces back to sizing the bay for the car instead of sizing it for the job.

For EV suspension work specifically, we recommend shops plan for wider column spacing than they think they need, because EV platforms tend to run wider tracks and lower ride heights than comparable gas vehicles. We also tell shops to think about air line and power drop placement before the lift goes in, since suspension work means impact guns, spring compressors, and sometimes battery service tools all running at the same bay at once. Getting this right the first time saves a shop from rerouting utilities six months into operation, which costs far more in downtime than doing it correctly during install.

What EV Suspension Work Actually Demands From the Lift

Beyond raw capacity, EV suspension and shock replacement puts specific demands on a lift that gas-shop owners don’t always anticipate. Adjustable arms need enough range to reach lift points that are sometimes tucked farther inboard than a traditional frame rail. Pad height needs to clear battery skid plates without contacting them. And because EV curb weights run heavier across the board, the lift needs margin above the vehicle’s actual weight, not just enough to clear it on paper.

Is the bay a pit or slab, and is the concrete rated for anchor bolts at the spacing the lift requires? How much lead time before an install date, and how far out is the schedule booked? These aren’t small details — we’ve had installs delayed because a shop didn’t realize their slab needed testing before we could anchor a lift rated for the loads EV suspension work demands.

If a shop is moving into a building that wasn’t previously an automotive space, we strongly recommend a concrete inspection before the lift arrives, not after. Freight delivery timing matters too — commercial lifts often ship on a schedule outside our control, and shops planning a grand opening around a specific date need to build in a buffer. Getting the logistics right is just as important as picking new versus used.

Reconditioned Lifts: The Middle Path Most Shops Don’t Know About

Between buying fully new and buying an unknown used unit off a classifieds site sits a middle option a lot of EV shop owners don’t know exists: factory-reconditioned or dealer-inspected used lifts. These are units that have gone through a documented inspection and replacement of wear components — cylinders, cables, locks — before resale, often with some form of warranty backing them. For a shop trying to stretch a startup budget without gambling on unknown history, this is frequently the right call.

We’ve steered several Des Moines metro shops toward this path when new pricing didn’t fit the budget but an unverified used lift felt too risky for a bay that would see daily suspension and shock work. It’s not the flashiest answer, but it’s the honest one — a reconditioned Rotary or Challenger with documented work done can outperform a “new-in-box” lift from a brand with no local support if something goes wrong six months in. A shop doing occasional suspension work on lighter EVs has different needs than a shop specializing in shock replacement on heavier electric trucks and SUVs all day. The right autolift garage setup starts with an honest assessment of vehicle weights, daily cycle count, and how much risk a shop is willing to take on an unverified used unit.
