Why Municipal Fleets Need a Purpose-Built Autolift Garage

City and county fleet vehicles aren’t passenger cars. Plow trucks, transit buses, refuse trucks, and heavy pickups all need real undercarriage access for exhaust repairs, driveline swaps, and U-joint service, and that means a taller lift and a taller ceiling than a typical retail shop. A lot of the municipal garages we’ve walked through in the Des Moines metro were built decades ago for smaller equipment, and the fleet has outgrown the building without anyone updating the lift plan to match.

An autolift garage designed for fleet work has to account for full rise height plus the vehicle height plus clearance for whatever’s overhead — sprinkler heads, HVAC ductwork, light fixtures. We measure all of that before we ever recommend equipment, because a two-post lift that works great in a private garage can top out short in a bay with an eleven-foot ceiling once you add a full-size van on top. Getting this right the first time saves a fleet manager from a lift that technically fits the floor plan but can’t actually do the exhaust and driveline work it was bought for.

Ceiling Height: The Number One Reason Fleet Lift Projects Stall

Ceiling height is the single most common reason we have to redesign a municipal autolift garage plan after the fact. A two-post lift rated for a 12-foot rise needs more than 12 feet of clear ceiling — you have to add the height of the vehicle sitting on the lift, plus a safety margin, plus room for any overhead obstructions. In older Des Moines metro municipal buildings, we regularly find 12 to 14 foot ceilings that look generous until you put a raised plow truck under them.

This is where a low-profile or asymmetric two-post design earns its keep, because it shifts weight and reach without demanding extra headroom the building doesn’t have. In some bays we’ve recommended a four-post drive-on lift instead, since it lets techs work driveline and exhaust components without needing the full vertical clearance a two-post arm-lift setup requires. Before ordering anything, we walk the bay with a laser measure, note every duct and light fixture, and confirm the tallest vehicle in the fleet with its mirrors, light bars, and antennas still accounted for. Skipping that step is how fleets end up with a lift they can’t run at full height.

Door Swing and Drive-Through Clearance for Fleet Vehicles

Door swing gets overlooked constantly in an autolift garage plan, and it causes just as many headaches as ceiling height. A bay door rated for a pickup truck doesn’t automatically clear a transit van or a single-axle dump truck with a raised body, and the swing radius of an overhead door changes how close you can position the lift to the front of the bay. We’ve seen municipal shops order a two-post lift, get it installed, and then discover the columns sit too close to the door track for a full-size van to clear on the way in.

We also look at how vehicles enter and exit once they’re on the lift. Exhaust and driveline work often means a tech needs to walk all the way around the vehicle underneath it, so the lift placement has to leave enough side clearance from the door track and adjacent equipment. For fleets running mixed vehicle types — pickups one day, box trucks the next — we typically recommend spacing that favors the largest vehicle in rotation, even if it means one bay handles slightly less volume. It’s a tradeoff every fleet manager we work with has to make, and we’d rather talk through it upfront than after a truck gets stuck.

Choosing the Right Lift for Exhaust and Driveline Access

For exhaust and driveline work specifically, open-underneath access matters more than raw capacity. A Rotary two-post with the right arm configuration gives techs a clear shot at the entire underside without a center obstruction, which is exactly what you want for cat-back exhaust swaps, U-joint replacement, or a full driveshaft pull. Challenger’s heavier-duty two-post models handle the added weight of plow trucks and larger fleet vehicles while still leaving that open access underneath.

Four-post lifts come into play when a fleet needs to store a vehicle at height while working on it, or when the vehicle’s weight distribution makes a two-post lift a poor fit. We size every autolift garage recommendation around actual fleet vehicle weights and dimensions rather than a generic capacity number, because a lift rated high enough on paper can still be the wrong shape for the job. Municipal fleet managers we talk to usually know their vehicle mix cold — what they need from us is the lift geometry to match it.

Concrete, Anchoring, and What Installers Actually Check On Site

Before any lift goes into an autolift garage, we check the floor. Municipal shop floors vary wildly in thickness and age, and a lift anchored into thin or cracked concrete is a liability no matter how good the equipment is. We test slab thickness and condition at every proposed anchor point, and if a floor doesn’t meet spec, we tell the fleet manager before installation, not after.

We also confirm site access before delivery day — is there a forklift on site, is there a loading dock or ground-level access, how far is the walk from the drop point to the bay. Heavy two-post and four-post components aren’t light, and a fleet garage without a forklift needs a different delivery plan than one that has equipment on hand. These logistics questions come up on nearly every municipal install we quote, and getting them settled early keeps installation day from turning into a delay.

Safety-First Walkthrough: What We Check Before Signing Off

A safety-first walkthrough on a fleet autolift garage isn’t a formality for us — it’s how we catch problems before a technician is standing under a raised truck. We check locking mechanisms, arm restraints, hydraulic lines, and anchor bolt torque on every install, and we document it. For municipal accounts, that documentation often matters for compliance and insurance review, so we keep it thorough.

We also train the crew that’s going to use the lift day to day.
