Most southeast Iowa garages we walk into were built decades ago, with joists set anywhere from 10 to 12 feet off the slab. That sounds like plenty of room until you actually stack the numbers. A standard two-post lift with a 9,000 to 12,000 lb capacity often runs 136 to 142 inches to the top of the overhead beam. Add a full-size pickup or a duty-rated van sitting at full rise for exhaust or driveline access, and you’re adding another 70-plus inches of vehicle height on top of that. Suddenly a 12-foot ceiling isn’t the given it seemed to be.
This is exactly why we don’t quote an autolift garage build over the phone without real measurements. We’ve had shops assume they had headroom, only to find a duct run, a sprinkler head, or a light fixture sitting right where the lift’s top beam needed to be. For driveline work specifically — where a tech wants the vehicle at full height to drop a transmission or work a driveshaft from underneath — we often recommend a low-overhead-height two-post model, or in some buildings, a four-post drive-on with a shorter rise, so the vehicle never needs to travel as far vertically to get the same working position underneath.
Door Swing and Bay Width for Exhaust Bays
Exhaust work isn’t just about height — it’s about how a tech moves around the vehicle with a torch, a pipe bender, or a floor jack while the car sits at chest height. In a lot of the older southeast Iowa buildings we service, bay width was set for a single vehicle with maybe 18 inches of walk space on either side. That’s tight once arm assemblies are swung out and a tech is trying to work a full exhaust system from tailpipe to manifold.
We generally tell shop owners to plan for a minimum of 12 feet of clear bay width for a two-post lift doing regular exhaust and driveline work, and closer to 14 feet if the plan includes a rolling toolbox or a parts cart staged nearby. Door swing matters just as much — if the overhead door track intrudes into the lift’s post placement, or if a walk-through door swings into the arm’s travel path, you’ll fight it every single day. We map post placement against door swing before a single anchor bolt goes into the slab, because moving a post six inches after the concrete work is done is not a cheap fix.
Concrete and Anchoring Realities We See Across Iowa
An autolift garage is only as good as the slab underneath it. We’ve walked into shops with beautiful floors that were poured for foot traffic and light parts storage, not a loaded two-post lift lifting a one-ton dually with a full exhaust system hanging off it. Anchor pull-out tests matter here, and we run them before install, not after something shifts. Southeast Iowa’s freeze-thaw cycle also does a number on older slabs — hairline cracks that look cosmetic can be a real problem once you’re drilling anchors into them.
For family shops that have been in the same building for two or three generations, this is often the piece that surprises people the most. Grandpa’s floor held up a hydraulic jack and a creeper for fifty years just fine, but a modern lift puts concentrated point loads on four small footprints instead of spreading weight across the whole slab. We’ve had to recommend slab reinforcement or repour sections more than once before we’d sign off on an install, because we’d rather tell a customer that up front than have a lift shift six months later.
Choosing the Right Lift Type for Driveline Access
Not every autolift garage needs a full two-post setup. If the shop is doing heavy driveline teardown — transmissions, transfer cases, u-joints — a lot of techs actually prefer working under a vehicle on a four-post drive-on lift with a rolling jack bridge, because it gives a flat, stable working platform without arm assemblies in the way. For exhaust work specifically, a two-post is usually faster to get in and out from underneath, since there’s no ramp to walk up and the whole underside is open once the vehicle clears headroom.
We ask shop owners some blunt questions before recommending equipment: how many vehicles a day need this bay, are they mostly cars or trucks and vans, and does the tech need full rise for driveline drops or just mid-height for exhaust. A shop doing a mix of both often ends up happier with a mid-rise scissor for quick exhaust jobs and a two-post for anything needing full driveline access, rather than trying to force one lift to do everything.
Scheduling, Freight, and Getting the Lift Into the Building
Once the clearance math checks out, the next real-world question is logistics. Do you have a forklift on site, or does our crew need to bring rigging equipment to get the lift components off the truck? Is there a loading dock, or are we hand-carrying columns through a walk door? We ask these questions on every autolift garage install because freight delivery in rural southeast Iowa isn’t always straightforward — some of these buildings have narrow drive approaches or gravel lots that a full-size freight truck can’t easily maneuver.
We also plan install date around the shop’s actual workload, not just our calendar.
