Every body shop foreman we talk to in Cedar Falls has the same request when they add an autolift garage bay: give me every inch of underbody clearance I can get, because I am doing exhaust and driveline work at height every week. A body shop is not a quick-lube — the tech is under the car with a MIG welder and a torch, and the car needs to be head-height, not waist-height. Why Exhaust and Driveline Demand a Two-Post
You cannot cut and weld exhaust on a scissor lift and you cannot pull a driveshaft on a four-post. Both of those lift types leave the wheels loaded, which means the axle stays in normal ride height and the driveshaft angle stays fixed. A two-post autolift garage lifts by the frame, which lets the suspension hang free. That is what you need to drop a driveshaft, service a differential, or pull a transmission crossmember. The wheels-hang geometry is not a nice-to-have for a body shop — it is the fundamental requirement.
For exhaust specifically, a two-post lift gets the car high enough that a full-height tech is standing straight under it with the mid-pipe at head level. That is a night-and-day difference for cut-and-weld work. On a mid-rise scissor the tech is on a creeper looking up; on a two-post the tech is upright with both hands free. Any Cedar Falls body shop planning a new autolift garage bay should specify a two-post as the primary and treat everything else as an option.
Column Height and the Underbody Envelope
Standard-column two-post lifts get the frame to about 72 inches at full rise. Extended-column two-post lifts get it to about 84 inches. For exhaust and driveline work you want the extended-column option every time, because that extra foot of clearance is the difference between a comfortable stand-up work position and a hunched-over back-killer. The upcharge for extended columns is a few hundred dollars per lift and it is money you will never regret spending.
Ceiling clearance in the autolift garage bay has to match. An extended-column two-post lift needs about 14 feet of clear ceiling to fully deploy without hitting the trusses. Cedar Falls pole buildings with 14-foot side walls and 16-foot center trusses handle it fine. If your bay has 12-foot side walls with 14-foot trusses, we would center the lift under the truss peak to buy the extra headroom. Below 12 feet clear you are into a standard-column setup and the workflow gets tighter.
Overhead vs Floor-Plate Configuration
Two-post lifts come in overhead-cable and floor-plate configurations. Overhead runs a bar and cable across the top of the columns to sync them; floor-plate runs a steel plate across the base at floor level. For an exhaust and driveline autolift garage the choice is overhead every single time. The floor plate creates a trip hazard right under the car and it interferes with rolling a driveshaft or transmission jack across the bay. The overhead cable stays out of the way.
The one drawback of overhead is the ceiling clearance requirement — the overhead bar sits at the top of the columns, so it eats about 6 inches of clear height above the max lift point. If your ceiling is tight, that 6 inches can push you into the floor-plate configuration instead. For most Cedar Falls body shop buildings the ceiling is high enough that overhead is the obvious choice. Order overhead unless the ceiling forces your hand.
Freight: What Actually Shows Up at Your Door
A two-post extended-column autolift garage lift ships as one palletized crate around 2,000 lb. The crate is roughly 10 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 3 feet tall. Common carrier freight from the Rotary or Challenger Midwest distribution warehouse to Cedar Falls runs in the high three-figure to low four-figure range depending on fuel surcharge and season. That number is not part of the lift’s list price — you pay it separately or we roll it into a bundled invoice.
Freight delivery takes 5 to 10 business days from order. The carrier calls to schedule a delivery window, which is usually a four-hour window on a specific weekday morning. Someone with authority to accept and sign for the freight has to be at the shop during that window. If nobody is there, the driver rolls back to the terminal and you pay a redelivery fee, typically another hundred and change. Unloading: Forklift Logistics
The single most common mistake first-time autolift garage buyers make is not planning for unloading. The freight driver’s truck does not have a lift-gate unless you paid the surcharge, and even then most lift-gate trucks cannot handle 2,000 lb of palletized weight. You need one of two things at your shop: a forklift rated for at least 3,000 lb, or a pre-scheduled arrangement with us to handle unloading with our own trailer and truck-mounted crane.

That runs a couple hundred dollars and lets the driver unload the crate quickly and cleanly. That bundle adds roughly a thousand dollars but it eliminates every unloading concern for the shop.
Install Day and Function Test

That includes anchor drilling, column plumbing and squaring to within a sixteenth of an inch, cable tensioning, hydraulic fill and bleed, ALI safety-lock verification, and a function test with a real vehicle.
