We got a call last year from a third-generation family shop just across the border in southern Minnesota — grandfather started it doing farm truck repair, dad grew it into a body and frame shop, and now the grandson is bringing in classic car restoration work that needs a lift capable of holding a stripped-down frame for weeks at a time. What an Autolift Garage Needs for Restoration and Metal Work

Restoration and heavy metal work put different demands on an autolift garage than a quick-lube bay does. You’re not rotating cars through in twenty minutes — you’re holding a chassis in the air for days while someone welds in floor pans or replaces a frame rail. That means the lift needs to be rated for extended static hold, and the arms or runway need clearance for aftermarket exhaust, lowered suspensions, or a frame that’s been cut apart mid-project. Two-post frame-engaging lifts work well here because they leave the underside completely open, but you need enough ceiling height and column spacing to actually get the doors open and swing a body panel out.

On the call with the family in southern Minnesota, we walked through exact numbers before quoting anything. Garage door width between the doors, depth door to door, ceiling height at the lowest point of any duct or joist, and the overall outside-of-column width of the lift itself. Their columns needed to clear the door opening with room on both sides, and once you add the runways or ramps to a drive-on style unit, the depth grows again — that extra length rarely matters for clearance, but it matters for where you park anything else in the bay. Getting these dimensions right before ordering saves a redo later.

Real Dimensions That Make or Break the Install

Every autolift garage project starts with a tape measure, not a catalog page. On a recent double-wide two-post job we specced, the lift stood 82 inches from the ground to the bottom of the runway at full rise — that’s the number that decides whether a lifted truck or a car on a service rack underneath will actually clear. The customer’s ceiling ran a little over 13 feet at the ridge, tapering lower between the roof trusses, so we confirmed clearance at the lowest point, not the highest, before committing to a column height.

Garage door width matters just as much. In that same install, the opening between the doors measured right around 201 inches, and the outside-to-outside column width of the lift came in at 202 — close enough that half of each column effectively sat outside the door frame line, which was fine because there was room on both sides of the opening. Depth ran 233 inches door to door, and the lift’s outside-column-to-outside-column length was 198, growing to about 242 and a half once runways were mounted. None of that is guesswork — it’s the difference between a lift that fits and a lift that gets returned. Any autolift garage plan should start with these four numbers before a single bolt goes in the floor.

Concrete, Anchoring, and Site Readiness

We ask every restoration shop the same questions before we schedule an install: how thick and how old is the slab, is there rebar or mesh in it, and has anything been poured or patched near where the columns will land. A two-post lift concentrates enormous point loads into four anchor bolts per column, and a slab that looks fine to the eye can still be too thin or too cracked to hold a loaded lift safely for twenty years. For heavier frame-engaging models used in metal work, we generally want a slab thickness and cure time that meets the manufacturer’s minimum, and we’ll walk the site in person or over a video call to confirm before we book a date.

We also ask about site access before the truck ever leaves our shop — is there a forklift on site, or do we need to bring our own equipment to unload and position columns that can weigh more than a compact car. Is there a pit already cut into the floor from a previous lift, and if so, what condition is it in. These logistics questions feel basic, but they’re the ones that turn a one-day install into a three-day install if they’re skipped. A family shop that’s operated for decades usually has an older slab with some history to it, so we always recommend a site visit rather than quoting blind off a phone call.

Twenty-Year Total Cost of Ownership, Line by Line

The purchase price of an autolift garage setup is the smallest piece of a twenty-year budget, and that surprises most owners the first time we lay it out. Beyond the equipment and install, you’re budgeting for annual inspections, cable or cylinder replacement on a cycle that depends on use, hydraulic fluid changes, and eventually a full seal rebuild on the cylinders if you run a hydraulic two-post. A shop doing frame and metal work tends to cycle lifts harder than a general repair bay, because the lift sits loaded for longer stretches and gets more full-rise, full-lower cycles per project.

We tell family shops to plan for a mid-life service — usually somewhere in year eight to twelve — where cables, pulleys, and safety locks all get inspected and replaced as a set rather than piecemeal. That single planned service, done proactively, is almost always cheaper than an emergency repair after a cable fails on a loaded lift. Add in the cost of downtime if a lift goes offline unexpectedly during a paying restoration job, and the twenty-year math clearly favors a lift bought with headroom for growth and installed correctly the first time, over the cheapest unit that just barely fits the bay.

Two-Post Versus Four-Post for Long-Term Restoration Work

Third-generation shops ask us this constantly, and there’s no single right answer for every autolift garage. A two-post frame-engaging lift gives full underside access, which restoration and metal work genuinely need — you can’t weld in a floor pan with a runway in the way. But a four-post drive-on lift is more forgiving for storage, alignment work, or holding a vehicle at height without touching the frame at all, which matters when you’re working on a car with a compromised or already-cut frame that a two-post’s arms shouldn’t clamp onto.

Many of the multi-generation shops we work with end up running both, in separate bays, because the work varies week to week. If budget only allows one lift right now, we usually recommend starting with the two-post for the majority of frame and body work, then adding a four-post later once volume justifies it. That staged approach spreads the twenty-year cost out instead of front-loading it, and it lets a growing shop reinvest restoration revenue into the second lift once the first one is paying for itself.

Warranty, Service Response, and Keeping Lifts Running

An autolift garage is only as reliable as the service behind it once the install crew leaves. We warranty our lift installations for a full year, and beyond that we handle inspections, repairs, and parts lookups by part number so a shop isn’t stuck waiting on a distributor three states away when a switch or a cylinder seal fails. Family shops running decades-old equipment call us just as often for parts on an old lift as they do for a new install quote, and we treat both the same way.

We also try to be realistic about scheduling. There’s rarely a perfect week when every lift in a working shop is free for service, so we build our schedule around the shop’s workflow instead of asking them to build theirs around ours. That flexibility matters more to a family-run operation juggling restoration deadlines than almost anything else we offer, because a lift going down mid-project costs far more than the service call itself.
