Why a Farm Shop Autolift Garage Isn’t a Dealership Bay

A dealership tech is under a car for twenty minutes doing an oil change. A farm shop owner near Iowa City is under a pickup for an hour draining and refilling a rear differential, or crawling underneath to inspect a driveline U-joint before harvest. That changes what you need from your autolift garage setup. You want stable, long-duration lifting with clear access to the axle housing and drain plug, not just quick up-and-down cycles. It also means your arms and pads need to reach around leaf springs, dual rear wheels, and aftermarket exhaust without a fight every time.

We also see farm shops running mixed fleets — a half-ton for parts runs, a one-ton dually for hauling, sometimes a skid steer or UTV that needs a wheel bearing looked at. An autolift garage built around one specific vehicle width will fight you on the others. That’s why the pre-purchase conversation always starts with what actually parks in the shop, not just what’s there today. Plan for the biggest, widest thing you own now plus whatever you’re likely to buy in the next five to ten years, because retrofitting a lift for a bigger truck later costs more than sizing correctly the first time.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms for Differential Work

This is the decision point that trips up a lot of rural shop owners, and it’s worth slowing down on. A symmetric two-post lift centers the vehicle evenly between the columns, which is great for general service and tire work, but it can put a column right where you want to stand to work on a rear differential. An asymmetric lift shifts the vehicle forward in the bay, giving you a wider clear zone behind the rear axle — exactly where you need room to pull a diff cover, catch draining fluid, and swing a torque wrench without bumping a column.

For a shop doing regular differential fluid service on trucks, we typically steer customers toward an asymmetric arm configuration. It’s the same logic dealerships use for door-opening clearance, but on a farm shop it pays off differently — more open floor space behind the truck means less contorting yourself around a post while a pan of old gear oil sits under the vehicle. That said, if your shop also does a lot of even-weight lifting like engine work or frame inspection, a symmetric setup still has its place. We walk through both configurations with customers before they order so nobody’s stuck with the wrong geometry for their actual work.

Power and Clearance Before You Order

Every autolift garage install starts with the same two questions we ask every customer: is there 220-volt power within about 50 feet of where the lift goes, and how much room do you have overhead and side to side? Ag buildings often have plenty of floor space but the header height over a garage door can be tighter than owners realize once you account for a lift’s fully raised height plus a vehicle on it. We’ve had shops discover late in the process that their door opener sits too close to the ceiling for an extended-height lift, which forces a different model or arm configuration.

On the electrical side, it doesn’t matter what outlet style you have as long as it’s 220-volt and within reach — we carry a range of adapters and can work with whatever’s already run to the building. If there’s no outlet at all yet, that’s fine too, but it needs to be sorted before install day, not during it. Concrete matters as well: a shop floor needs to meet minimum thickness and cure requirements for anchoring, so if your building has an older or thinner slab, tell us before we schedule the crew.

The Pre-Purchase Checklist We Actually Use

Two-Post vs Four-Post for a Working Farm Shop

Not every farm shop needs a two-post autolift garage. If your priority is long-term storage lifting, alignment checks, or holding a vehicle up for weeks during a slow winter project, a four-post drive-on lift is worth considering. It doesn’t require the same lifting-point precision as a two-post, which matters if you’ve got multiple people using the shop with different comfort levels around lift points on unfamiliar trucks or equipment.

The tradeoff is underbody access. A four-post makes differential fluid service harder because the frame rails are in the way unless you add a rolling bridge jack. For a shop where differential and driveline work is a regular task, we still lean toward a two-post with the right arm configuration. But if your shop does a mix of long-term storage, alignment, and undercarriage inspection across a wider variety of equipment, it’s worth pricing both configurations before committing. Installation Logistics for Rural Iowa Buildings

Getting a lift into a rural shop is its own project separate from the equipment itself. Most installs run about two days once the lift arrives, and having a forklift or equivalent on site to help unload can knock cost off the final bill since our crew doesn’t have to muscle everything by hand.
