We’ve talked to plenty of guys running shops across northern Missouri who want to turn a pole barn or a machine shed into a real working garage with a two-post or four-post lift, and the equipment is rarely the hard part. The hard part is the building. Before you spend a dollar on a lift, we want you to walk your shop with a tape measure, a flashlight, and this checklist, because the difference between a smooth install and a headache almost always comes down to prep work nobody thought to do first.

Why a Farm Shop Autolift Garage Is a Different Animal

A commercial shop in town gets built around the lift from day one. Most farm shops were built around a tractor, a welder, and whatever truck needed fixing that decade, and the lift gets added later. That means an autolift garage on a farm almost always has to work around existing constraints instead of the other way around. We see steel pole barns with trusses that dip lower than expected at the eave line, gravel or dirt floors poured over decades ago with unknown rebar, and single-phase power that was never sized for a hydraulic power unit running alongside a welder and an air compressor.

None of that rules out putting a lift in your shop. It just means the survey matters more than it would in a purpose-built garage. We ask the same questions on every farm call: what’s the actual ceiling height at the exact spot the lift will sit, not the peak of the roof; what’s under the floor; and what’s already pulling amps in that building. Get honest answers to those three things before you fall in love with a specific two-post or four-post model, because the autolift garage you can actually install is the one that matches your building, not the one in the catalog photo.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

This is the single most common reason a farm shop lift order gets changed after the fact. A two-post lift needs enough overhead room to raise a full-size pickup or a dually with the arms up, and in an older pole barn that number can be tighter than you think once you account for the truss, any lighting fixtures, or a hoist beam running down the center. We’ve had customers measure to the roof deck and forget the truss cord sits a foot and a half lower right where the lift columns need to go.

Measure at the actual install location, not the tallest point in the building, and measure to the lowest obstruction — truss, purlin, light fixture, gas line, anything. Write that number down along with the tallest vehicle you expect to service, whether that’s a farm pickup, a grain truck, or a combine head hauler. If your ceiling is on the low side, a low-rise or drive-on lift changes the math completely, and it’s a conversation worth having before you order anything. This is exactly the kind of detail that turns a straightforward install into a return trip if it gets missed.

Concrete Thickness and Slab Condition

A lot of farm shop slabs were poured for tractors and hay wagons, not for anchoring a hydraulic lift. Two-post lifts put concentrated point loads through the anchor bolts at each column, and the slab needs adequate thickness and cure time to hold those anchors under real use. We generally want to see a minimum slab thickness with proper rebar or mesh, poured and cured, no visible cracking radiating out from the intended footprint, and no evidence of frost heave in that section of the floor.

If you’re not sure what’s under your slab, that’s a normal answer for an older shop — but it’s one we need before showing up with a lift on a trailer. Old shops sometimes have additions poured at different times with a seam running right through the bay, or a section poured thinner near a door where a truck used to back in. We’d rather find that out during the site survey than during the anchor-drilling. If your slab won’t support a two-post setup as-is, a four-post lift that spreads the load across a full frame footprint is often the more realistic path for an autolift garage built on an older pour.

Power Supply and Electrical Realities

Most rural shops run on single-phase power, and that’s fine for the vast majority of two-post and four-post lifts we install — but the circuit still needs to be sized correctly and dedicated, not shared with the welder outlet or the air compressor on the same breaker. We ask what else is running in the building at the same time a lift might be in use, because farm shops tend to have everything wired into a handful of circuits from whenever the building went up.

Before we finalize an install date, we want to know your panel capacity, the distance from the panel to the lift location, and whether you’ve got a dedicated run or need one added. This is cheaper and easier to sort out before delivery than after. If you’re planning to add a compressor, a welder, or shop lighting around the same time as the lift, tell us — we’d rather help you plan the whole electrical picture once than have you call back in six months when the breaker keeps tripping.

Door Height, Bay Width, and Delivery Access

This is the logistics question we ask on nearly every farm shop quote: how is the lift actually getting into the building? Two-post and four-post lifts ship on pallets, and columns are heavy — moving them by hand across gravel or through a narrow door isn’t realistic. We need to know if there’s a forklift on site, whether the shop has a drive-through bay or just one door, and whether that door is tall and wide enough to bring components in without disassembling half the crate outside in the weather.

Rural delivery adds another layer — freight carriers don’t always love gravel driveways or tight turnarounds, and lead times can run longer to reach northern Missouri addresses than a metro shop. Tell us up front about long gravel lanes, low-hanging tree limbs on the approach, or gates that need to stay open on delivery day. None of this is a dealbreaker, but surprises on delivery day cost everyone time, and a farm shop autolift garage project runs a lot smoother when we already know the truck can actually get there.

Layout, Bay Spacing, and Working Clearance

Farm shops often do double duty — welding bench on one wall, parts shelving on another, a lift squeezed into whatever space is left. We look at total bay width, not just where the columns will sit, because you need clearance to fully open truck doors, walk around the vehicle with tools, and still get a tractor or another truck past the lift when it’s occupied. A two-post lift needs less floor footprint than a four-post, but a four-post gives you a permanent alignment-ready platform if that’s part of your regular work.

Think about traffic flow too — if the shop is also where you pull equipment in and out during planting or harvest season, the lift location needs to stay out of that path or the lift becomes a seasonal obstacle instead of a tool you use daily. What to Have Ready Before You Call for a Quote

Once the physical survey is done, a few more details speed up your quote and installation scheduling. Know your ceiling height at the install spot, your slab thickness if you have it, your panel capacity and distance to the lift location, and your door dimensions. Take a few photos of the bay from a couple angles and send them along — it helps us flag issues before we’re standing in your shop.

Also think through what you’ll actually use the lift for day to day, whether that’s general maintenance on farm pickups and equipment trucks, tire work, or heavier jobs on grain trucks. That shapes whether a two-post, four-post, or drive-on setup is the right call for your daily maintenance routine. We’d rather spend twenty minutes on the phone up front sorting through your building’s specifics than schedule an install date and discover a problem once the truck’s already on your gravel lane. A little prep turns a farm shop autolift garage project into a one-visit job instead of a two-visit one.
